    3. According to her SS5, Maude Lydick Zeigler (May 7, 1897-August 1972) was the daughter of Frank Francis Lydick and Mary Ellen Wilhelm. FF Lydick married Mary Ellen Wilhelm in 1889. Maude married Ross Zeigler in 1917. Does anyone know anything more about F. F. Lydick and Mary Ellen Wilhelm? Did they have more children? Who were Mary Ellen's parents? Who were Frank Francis Lydic's parents? (and why would anyone name their child Frank Francis since Frank is a nickname for Francis?) Ross is a first cousin, once removed from me, making his children second cousins. I am only related to the Lydicks and Wilhelms through this marriage. Betty Smith csmith655@comcast.net

    1. [INDIANA] Harry Stephen Gibson
    2. To any interested persons: I've been trying to find information on a Hiram Gibson, a s/o Thomas Gibson and Margaret E. Ow, for a few years now. I could not find him anywhere. Well, I finally found him. This was what I knew of Hiram Gibson: He was born about 1884, and left home at the age of 16. When he was 21, he was living somewhere in the mid-west, and eloped with a 16 year old girl. Her father was outraged and had the marriage annulled. The girl remained at home, and Hiram went to California. When the girl was 21, Hiram returned and claimed his wife and daughter and went back to CA. I have searched through the census', trying different parameters. This last time in the CA 1930 census, I tried: Gibson, age 46, born in PA. The result was a Harry S. Gibson, age 46, living with his daughter, Lucille, age 15. The daughter was born in CA, but her mother was born in Illinois. I went to the 1920 census and looked up Harry S. Gibson: Gibson, Harry S. 38 PA PA PA Nellie 28 ILL OH IND Eva 10 ILL PA ILL Lucille 5 CA PA ILL Now this is what I would expect, if this were HIram Gibson, and I was starting to wonder if he had changed his name. I still needed positive proof, so I went to the California Death Index. I just used: Gibson, born PA, lived in CA, father surname was Gibson, mother's maiden name, Ow. I think the name Ow would be the real clincher, as it is not a common name. Well, the result was a Harry Stephen Gibson, born October 14, 1883, and died January 22, 1940. In the Will of Thomas Gibson, Harry is called HIram, and Thomas Gibson died in 1918. So, maybe Hiram did change his name to Harry S., but his father still still went by Hiram. I'll still dig for more proof. Just thought I'd share this, as isn't this the way things go in genealogy. -Gary T. Gibson

    1. [INDIANA] Bartlebaugh Updated information
    2. E Schenk
    3. For anyone I missed via the Bartlebaugh update, here is a correction about information linked to Bartlebaugh. I want to get rid of one bit of Bartlebaugh information that we have found to be untrue. Written in the History of Franklin County Pennsylvania is a tax list for 1786 and a George Bartlebaugh. >From the "History of Franklin County, Pa." Warner, Beers & Co. 1887 a list of Taxables for 1786 listed a Geo. Bartlebaugh in Antrim Township with its present boundaries including the borough of Greencastle. This winter Ruth , Debbie and I looked at it very carefully. Though the spelling is Bartlebaugh, the person is really a George Puterbaugh. We have no idea why he was listed as a Bartlebaugh. I joined the Puterbaugh family list and had help from a few researchers of the Puterbaugh family Our John Bartlebaugh and family could not be found. Puterbaughs have accounted for almost all of their early Puterbaugh family. Their name changes are Butterbaugh, Buterbaugh and Booterbaugh. Their stories maybe close to some of our stories and they may have even lived near each other in Bedford County then later in Clearfield and Indiana County. Let us say it is 95% sure we do not come from that family. Now long ago it was dangerous if you called a Buterbaugh by the name Bartlebaugh, you had to run as you might get shot. Anyone know a reason for that story? Elaine

I have a better understanding of what my ancestors must have been doing during the time of the Revolutionary War now. They were probably among some of those fighting the Indians and people who wanted to claim the area around what later became Armstrong County. Sandy Lockhart Mundinger

    2. Georgia Halloran
    3. Posted on WV site: Last Saturday, March 13, in the WV Legislature, House Bill 4330 passed. It is now awaiting signature from Governor Wise to make it law. If you are a family genealogist/historian whose research involves West Virginia, then this bill affects your work whether you live in West Virginia or another state. If Governor Wise signs HB 4330, all birth records will be closed to public access for 100 years and all death records closed for 50 years. We are all concerned about privacy issues but HB 4330 in its current format is too restrictive. Please email Governor Wise and address your concerns. Don't delay. The governor's email address is Governor@WVGOV.org If you would like to examine HB 4330 then cut and paste the URL below. Remember to sign your email with your full name and address.

    1. [INDIANA] Border War
    2. Roger Murray
    3. The French & Indian War was concluded with The Peace of Paris in 1763. In this agreement the British pledged the prohibit future American settlement west of the Appalachian Mountains. A proclamation line was drawn along the crest of the Appalachian Mts. It was acknowledged that the Indians owned the lands on which they were residing and that white settlers in the area west of the line were to be removed. However, provisions were made for licensed fur traders to operate in the area. Almost immediately the proclamation met resistance from colonial land speculators and frontiersmen who risked their lives and fortunes in the preceding war with the French. Most felt that the proclamation was temporary and ignored it. Thousands crossed the Appalachians and many pushed into Ohio. Many were killed during this time in clashed with the Indians. In 1764 the line was modified to accommodate speculators. In 1768 the Treaty of Ft. Stanwix between the British and the Iroquois nation, the Iroquois surrendered their claim to the lands south and east of the Ohio River. This opened up the Kentucky region to settlement before Ohio. However, the Ohio river served as both a border with the Indian Nations and a vital transportation route. Large numbers of travelers on the river were killed by the natives. In 1774 the Gov. of Virginia, John Murray, Lord Dunmore decided to get involved in the situation either to thwart the advancement of Pennsylvania settlers into a region long claimed by Virginia or to advance his own fortune in land speculation. Troops were raised and offensive operations were mounted into Kentucky and towards Ft. Pitt in today's Pittsburgh. After a major battle near Point Pleasant the Treaty of Camp Charlotte was agreed to As a result the Non-Iroquois nations of Delaware, Shawnee, and Mingo tribes relinquished claims to lands south of the Ohio River. In April of 1775 the American Revolution began. Fighting between organized British forces and organized Colonial forces were rare in the frontier region of Western Pa. At this time the native tribes of Shawnee, Delaware, Mingo, Seneca, Wyandot, Potawatomi and Ottawa agreed to the Treaty of Pittsburgh which once again recognized the Ohio River as the border between native lands and colonial lands. This treaty soon fell apart and by 1776 white settlements were being attacked. In 1777 the British brought the native tribes to their side in the conflict. >From 1776 to the end of the Revolution in 1783 the British waged their frontier war with the colonist through the use of native American fighters. The end of Revolution did not bring and end to hostilities in the region. They continued, primarily in Indiana and Ohio well into the 1790. In 1794 Gen. Anthony Wayne defeated the Indians at Fallen Timbers in Ohio and the treaty of Greenville more or less ended all native claims to the region. This is along winded way of saying the the Border Wars encompassed the time between the end of the French and Indian War and the end of the Indian hostilities in the region, roughly 1763 to 1794. The following is a link to a very interesting, contemporary account of the war in Western PA. http://www.geocities.com/lydick_1999/History/o12w.html

    3. Does anyone out there know what units the Indiana Co boys became part of during WWI or isn't there any correlation? My grandma's youngest brother Boyd Manner b 1892 is buried in Marion Indiana VA Cemetery. It says he was in Co I 16th Infantry as a Private. They lived in Indiana (city). Don't know his wife's name or where they married. He had a son Boyd Elmer who I think just died in 1998 in the US Consulate of Canada?? Next question, are the Indiana Co. draft registration online anywhere? Any other WWI info at the Historical Society? Or do I just need to bite the bullet & order the (3) films that cover the county? Does anyone happen to have any of these at this very moment? Any suggestions would be appreciately accepted. Kaye
