    3. I'm trying to locate information a Brice (or Bryce) Henderson who was born in Westmoreland or Indiana in 1818, later moved to Armstrong County. If you run across anything like that, please keep me in mind. Thanks. -----Original Message----- From: MICHAEL B HENDERSON [mailto:mbanlf@msn.com] Sent: Wednesday, April 07, 2004 4:49 PM To: PAINDIAN-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [INDIANA] Henderson, Laughlin and Rankin Families I need help sorting out the many Josephs in all three of these families. My ancestor is Joseph Henderson married to Eliza Laughlin, daughter of Joseph Laughlin and Maria Rankin. This Joseph and Maria Laughlin had a son named Joseph Henderson Laughlin. I am trying to find siblings and parents of Joseph Henderson. Right now I am trying to disprove that he was the son of James Henderson of Derry, Westmoreland. James lists four sons Joseph, Robert, John and James Andrews. His daughters were Mary who married Daniel Holstein, Margaret married to William Jayne or Jayner, Isabella married to David Hutchison, Jane married Peter Craven, and Lucy Ann married to Andrew Long. 2. I'm not sure how helpful this resource is, but you can plug in the names of towns in the following web site and come up with satellite images. They seem to be from either the late 1970s or early 1990s, but I find them absolutely fascinating to see relationships between towns, landmarks, cemeteries, etc. Here is the main site link: http://terraserver.microsoft.com/ You can plug in the name of the town and the state in the "Search" function and it will take you to whatever satellite views they have. They are usually sections of the area. You can click on them to zoom in .... and it is usually enough to pinpoint roads, reservoirs, lakes, houses, churches, etc. Have fun. I've spent hours using the arrows to follow roads, and have been able to pinpoint some that I had been looking for while on the ground! Sue

    2. William T. Lyons
    3. Great detective work following the census trail. Log cabins were often built alongside creeks, ponds, springs or other water sources if possible. There may be a detectable depression in the ground for many years after the destruction of a log cabin. If you find a spot that looks likely, use a metal detector for nails and other metal objects. Depending on the terrain, a photograph from the air of the area just after sunrise or before sunset on a sunny day may reveal man made features such as old building sites. The low angle of the sun permits a side view of depressions and rises in the ground that may not be ordinarily detectable on the ground. Just depends on how much time and money you want to put into the project. If Samuel A. Gibson really lived to be 175 years old, you have great genes! (:>) Good luck in your hunt. Let me know if you ever find the site. Bill Lyons

    1. Another Old Log Cabin
    2. Just to share what happened: In doing this genealogy on my family, I wanted to see just how far back I could go. Hitting my wall at Samuel A. Gibson (1782-1957), I still wanted to find more about him. I wanted to know where he lived, and where he was from. Maybe then I could find out who his parents were. Samuel A. Gibson is my 3rd great grandfather. What I want to tell you is how I believe I found the location of what may prove to be the location of an old log cabin that he is said to have built. My main sources of information have been the census records from 1850 to 1870, the 1871 Beers Map of Cherryhill Twp., Indiana Co., PA, and also some family stories. One story is that Samuel A. Gibson built a log cabin, moved his wife into it, and eventually all 7 of his children were born there. (The cabin would have been built about 1813.) The other is that his son, Josiah Gibson, inherited the family farm. In Cherryhill Twp., the 1871 Beers Map shows many members of my Gibson family. I knew it wouldn't show Samuel A. Gibson, because he died in 1857, but it does show, William Gibson, David Lockard (Margaret Gibson), Ezekiel Gibson, Allison Gibson, 2 Hiram Gibsons, and Jno McKendrick (Amanda Gibson). Josiah Gibson is living in Taylorsville Borough. All Samuel's children are there. A cousin of mine, Robert Gibson, who lives in Indiana Co., was doing some looking through some records to see if he could find any deeds that had Samuel A. Gibson's name on it. They were trying to help me find where Samuel A. Gibson's house was. I thought it would be helpful to them if went through the census's and got the names of some of Samuel's neighbors. What I found may not be true for other census's, but in this case, the census taker followed the same roads, in the same direction, as he recorded families. I'll show you some of the residents recorded in order for each census, just for some reference: 1850 Ezekiel Gibson, John Ober, Daniel Brown, Allison Gibson, Levi Fry, Hiram Gibson, Harry Levington?, Samuel Gibson, George Brown, Martin Myers, David Lockard. The key names here are Allison Gibson,Hiram Gibson, Samuel Gibson, David Lockard. 1860 Samuel Harbridge, Curtis McCormick, Elizabeth Lydick, Allison Gibson, Hiram Gibson, Levi Philips, Elizabeth Harbridge, Josiah Gibson, David Lockard, William Putt, Martin Putt. Samuel is gone, and it looks like Josiah may have moved into Samuel's home. Key names are Allison Gibson, Hiram Gibson, Josiah Gibson, David Lockard. 1870 John Myers, Jno McKendrick, Hiram Gibson, Daniel Henry, George Henry, William Haddon, William Huffman, Samuel McFarland, Clinton? Wisinger, Levi Ober, David Lockard, William Lydick, John Stephens, Martin Putt. Key names here are Jno McKendrick (Probably moved into Allison Gibson's home), Hiram Gibson, David Lockard. I started to think, who is in Samuel Gibson's house? I can really say, but the Beers Map of 1871 shows 2 H. Gibsons, so probably no one. By 1870 it would be a 50 year old cabin. If you have the map, you could follow the names along the road. The H. Gibson on the right, shows the house of Samuel A. Gibson. There's a bit more to this ciphering that what I've said, but I didn't want this to get much longer than what it is. But where I'm at now is thinking if that location of Samuel's house is the log cabin that he built. Where do I go from here? Do I start tromping across the countryside looking for remnants of a log cabin? The area in question I believe is still quite rural, and undeveloped. Would finding any remnants be of any historical value? I'd appreciate anyone's thoughts on this stuff. Thanks -Gary T. Gibson

Anyone remember the Style Shop in Indiana back in the 60s? Would like to know more about the owner a Stella Repplogel and her sister Laura that married a Clawson. Father was Josiah Craig and grandfather Daniel Replogle who changed the spelling to Repplogel by what I see on his pension application from the Civil War. Elaine

    3. I am interested in sharing info regarding the following Kelly Family. My gg grandmother was a Kelly born in Indiana Co., PA in 1856. William D. Kelly was born in PA approx. 1818, his father born in Ireland, his mother born in PA. He married Mary Ann ____ born in PA approx. 1814, her father born in PA, her mother born in PA. Wm D. Kelly was a shoemaker in the 1860 PA Census, the 1870 PA Census and the 1880 IOWA Census. Wm. D. and Mary Ann Kelly had children names of: John (called Nelson) in the 1870 PA Census born PA approx. 1844. William born PA approx. 1849. James born PA approx. 1852 Malisa "Jane" born Indiana Co., PA in 1856. In the 1860 PA Census the Wm. and Mary Ann Kelly family, with all 4 children, are shown as living in Logan Twp., Blair Co., PA. In the 1870 PA Census the Wm. and Mary Ann Kelly family, minus son William, are shown as living in Borrough Twp., (Vanport) Beaver Co., PA. In the 1880 IOWA Census, Wm. and Mary Ann Kelly, with no children, are shown as living in Princeton, Leclair Twp., Scott Co., IA. One of the sons must have had a daughter, as there is a 6 year old Ella May Kelly born PA living in Iowa in the census with Wm and Mary Kelly as their granddaughter. Their daughter Jane Kelly was my gg grandmother. Jane Kelly married Miller L. McCreary of Hillsville, Mahoning Twp., Lawrence Co., PA. Jane Kelly McCreary died in July 1915 in New Castle, PA. Among others, she left a brother, Mr. J. F. Kelly, of Altoona, PA. I have lots of McCreary family history to share with any interested parties. Shari McCreary Price

    1. [INDIANA] Arthur McLaughlin
    2. Randy Cowser
    3. Arthur McLaughlin was born in either Pennsylvania or Ireland, census documents are conflicting. He was born in April 1838 and died in June 1878. He lived in Armstrong Twp. and around 1860 in Shelocta. His 1st wife was Mary Kerr daughter of James Kerr. They had 2 children Catherine Agnes and Joseph Wilson. Catherine was born in 1862 and Joseph in February 1864. Mary Kerr McLaughlin died in March 1864. Arthur's 2nd wife was Elizabeth Jane Crawford, they were married in 1866. Arthur was Burgess of Shelocta twice during the 1870's before his death. In the 1870 census a Nancy, born in Ireland, about 1809 was listed living with them. Again in 1880 Nancy again is listed living with Arthur's 2nd wife and listed as Mother-in-Law. I would like anyone who may have any information about Arthur McLaughlin's Father and Mother to contact me. Thanks. Randy in So. IL
