I typed up Catherine Wakefield Farrell's obituary and posted it on the PAINDIAN mailing list for other researchers. Here is the 1880 census data for Catherine. I was wondering why nothing was said about the husband in the obituary. Old Newspaper clipping, presumably in a Geneseo, IL paper, no date. Am not related; my family must have known her, as they also came from Indiana County and settled in Illinois. Another researcher contacted me some time ago and I sent a copy of the clipping to her. Can't remember her name offhand. Now that I see your email addie, maybe you were the one I sent the copy to. Won't hurt to get it in the archives. Mrs. Catherine Wakefield Farrel died at her home in Geneseo at 1 a.m. Monday, April 17, 1899. She was born near the town of Indiana, Pa., June 1, 1810. She had almost completed her 89th year. She was a daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Morton Wakefield. Her mother was a daughter of John Morton, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. Mrs. Farrell possessed a souvenir of this ancient and honorable line in the form of an oak chest, inlaid with satin wood, which was made for her mother in her fifteenth year. She gave it to her youngest daughter, Catherine, and in turn it passes to Catherine's youngest daughter, Mrs. Helen Chamberlain of Storm Lake, Ia. Catherine was the youngest of ten children, all of whom are dead. She was the mother of ten children, all living but two: G. W., a veteran of the Mexican War and War of the Rebellion; Dr. T. W., who is dead; Dr. J. H.; Dr. W. W.; Caroline, who died in infancy; Mrs. Cornelia Schureman; F. M.; Mrs. Julia Ewing; Ralph, and Mrs. Helen Chamberlin. All were present at the funeral except Julia, who was ill. Helen was with her mother two weeks; giving her devoted care. Frank has always been with his mother, and has by his loving care and tender regard, smoothed her pathway. Mrs. Farrell was a sister of Samuel Wakefield , the eminent Methodist minister, and author of numerous theological works. He also published many musical works. He died within a few years at Uniontown, Pa., aged 96. He was a Mason. He was a man of worldwide fame. The great dailies of the country contained columns concerning his life and achievement at the time of his death. Mrs. Farrell was a devout member of the Presbyterian church. Her mind was clear to the last. "I am going home to my baby girl," she said in her last hours. "I am the last to go home," she said, alluding to the passing of her brothers and sisters before her. Her thought was always for others. She urged her children to not work so hard in their care for her. Her death came from grip, succeeded by pneumonia and kidney trouble. The funeral was from the home of Mrs. Schureman, Wednesday afternoon, Rev. Dr. Kimball officiating. A psalm of her own selecting was sung. The interment was in Oakwood.

Ella Groft on May 4, 1892 Pennsylvania Indiana Indiana Evening Gazette 01 June 1911 EDWARD BEITER Edward Beiter died at his residence 117 Center Ave., Carrick borough, Pittsburg, on Tuesday, May 30, aged 44 years. Deceased is survived by two sisters and two brothers and by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Beiter, of Pittsburg. He was married to Miss Ella Groft, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Groft of East Oak Street, who also survives. Funeral services will be held from his late home on Friday morning at 8:30 o'clock. Requiem high mass at St. Basil's church at 9 o'clock. Interment will be made in St. Mary's cemetery. Mrs. George Groft, of East Oak Street, left today on the noon train today to attend the funeral. Hoffman and a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Groft of this place, passed away in her home, 1010 Roberts street, Pittsburgh Saturday afternoon at 2:15 o'clock. She leaves her husband; one daughter, Mrs. Florence Hoffman Eberharter of Indiana; her parents; two brothers, Charles A. Groft of Indiana and Joseph C. Groft of Johnstown and one sister, Mrs. Ella Miller of Pittsburgh. The body was brought to Indiana last evening and taken to the Groft home on East Water street. INDIANA NOV. 27, 1928 FUNERAL FOR GEORGE GROFT Aged Resident and Veteran of Civil War to Be Buried Wednesday Funeral services for George Groft. aged 97 years , whose death from the infirmities incident to advanced age occurred at his home on East Water street Monday morning, will be conducted tomorrow morning. There will be a solemn high mass of requiem in St. Bernard's Roman Catholic Church at 9:30 o'clock. Interment will be in St. Bernard's Cemetery. The deceased was a son of John and Susannah Groct and was born, reared, and had always lived in Indiana. He had lived retired in Indiana for many years. He was possessed of a quiet disposition and was ever (attentive) to the needs of his friends and community. He had been a member of the Catholic Church since childhood. Mr. Groft was a veteran of the Civil War, being a member of Company E, One Hundred and Forty Eighth Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. He served in active work until he was wounded at the Battle of Gettysburg. He was honorably discharged at the end of the struggle. The deceased leaves these children: Charles Groft, of Indiana, J.C.
