If you have a rough idea where the graves are, you might be able to "probe" for them using a steel rod. But, since the graves are probably over 50 years old, you'll most likely not find anything but dirt. The phrase "Ashes to Ashes, Dust to dust" applies very well here. If you are wanting to put up a headstone, check with the church to see if one of their elders might know the exact location. Otherwise, just put one up in the general area. Better something than nothing. Your grandparents won't mind if you are off by a foot or two.

    3. Hello Kathy. Yes I remember very well corresponding with you about my HESSES. As far as Steuben County goes and etc....I did get in touch with a descendant of Laura HESS of the A. Denis HESS/Catherine BOWER line. This same Laura named one of her children SIMON so we do believe this is indeed my own line. Other than that there isn't any true confirmation one hundred percent. In the online bio for my Albert Henry HESS it is stated he went into the 53rd Co. E on July 1, 1863....even though his military papers say otherwise. I have always theorized that he left the 135th in May of 1863 and then served on an unofficial status with the 53rd as a musician until his enlistment officially with them the following year. Who knows? And we will probably never know for sure. Good to hear from you and like you said maybe they DID fight together? God bless, Melissa __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? 1. Re: [INDIANA] QUESTIONS about my grandfather HESS' military service
    2. Melissa, We corresponded some time ago--your Albert HESS's sister Emmaline married John Miller WEBSTER in 1859. John was the brother of my greatgrandmother Mary Ann Webster, who married George W. Brady. Did you get any further back in the Steuben Co., NY area? Both the Websters and Hesses moved to Indiana Co. from there in the early 1840s. I have a similar problem with John Miller Webster's military service. His military records say that he deserted after 1 year's service in the Civil War. However, there is no record that he was punished (He definitely was not shot!) He is listed in the 1890 Special Census of Veterans as having served for 2 years, 9 months. Experts I have asked on-line suggest that he may have been separated from his unit and fought with another one unofficially. Perhaps that is what happened to Albert. Who knows--maybe they were off somewhere together--they were brothers-in-law! 2. Well, it looks like the family secret on Barnaby Blose Black is out of the closet. Don't fret, we all have some hidden sins we aren't too proud of. Shows he had great remorse and embarrassment to do what he did. So that says something. My grandfather was his nephew and was a "tool and die" man by occupation, so who knows, it could have been a big family business and he learned his trade at the Black Family Mint....:)..... Barb

    2. Melissa
    3. Hello to all on paindiana list. It has been a very long time since I have posted on here. But we (my family and I) are trying to ascertain some information concerning my Gr/Gr/Grandfather HESS' miliary service during the Civil War. His name is: Albert Henry HESS He served in these regiments: 135th PA Regt. Co. D: (Came in as a musician) upped in: August 1, 1862; Discharged: May 25, 1863; 53rd PA Regt. Co. E: (came in as private/out as 1st Lieutenant) upped in: March 17, 1864; Discharged: June 30, 1865; I have copies of his military papers so these dates are firm. The quandary is this: Grandfather claimed that he was indeed at the Battle of Gettysburg. But yet his dates in and out do not support that claim. The 53rd WAS at Gettysburg and they did have a musician with them at one time by the name of Albert Henry. So am wondering if this could have been him before he become a full enlistee. Albert Henry Hess was born, raised, and lived his full lifetime in Indiana County. His parents were Simon J. HESS and Louisa REED. His wife was Margerie Ellen LYDICK. If anyone out there has any info to help us in settling this family mystery it would be so appreciated. God bless, Melissa H. B.
