Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/UaB.2ACE/3251.1 Message Board Post: Not sure that I can answere your question regarding why Grant PO is listed on the census records for N,. Mahoning Twp. But I think we can locate Hartman Knauf. In the 1870 Census Hartman is listed as family #85. Looking at adjacent familes we can find the Wm. Bush, family #78. His farm is located just SW of Marchand PO in Dist. 3&4 on the N,. Mahoning Beers map. Immediately east of Bush is W. Blose. He is family #80. Next is McConaughey at family #81. At the crossroads near the Shields farm the census guy turned south and came to the McIsaac farm at family #82. This is probably the MCCuck farm on the map. I think that you Hartman Knauf is listed on the Beers map as H. Knox, immediately south of Marchand PO. I have seen many differences in the names on these maps and would not be at all surprised at the difference.

    2. Yvonne, I don't remember what year it was - but my mother told me of the last hanging she remembers that was in the Indiana County Jail - probably in the 20s - the hanging was carried out by a Sheriff Jefferies (father of a later Sheriff Jefferies in Indiana County).. the main point was that the man was dying at the time and the hanging had to be carried out before the man "cheated the Hangman"... Also the Sheriff would not get his hanging fee if he didn't hurry. The man was unconscious at the time of the execution.. The papers at the time said it was a black mark on the county that would never be forgotten.. I guess they were overstating the fact... Surnames: Knauf Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/UaB.2ACE/3251 Message Board Post: Does anyone know of the location of the Grant P.O. in 1870 in North Mahoning Township? The 1870 Census lists Hartman Knauf as living in the Grant P.O., North Mahoning Twp. area. I can find a Grant P.O. on the Beers Atlas in Montgomery Twp., but not North Mahoning. Another site indicates that Grant P.O. was also known by the names of Cherry Tree, Newmans Mill, Canoe Place, Bardville, Campville, and New Lancaster. I am wondering if Grant wasn't used in a number of Townships, and each had another common usage name. Do any of these fit in with North Mahoning history? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Dick

    3. Hi List, A friend of our son showed him an old newspaper story about James G. Allison who was hanged on Feb. 17, 1882 in Indiana for killing his father. Does anyone know when the last hanging occurred in Indiana county, and if any more is known about this story, it seemed to draw statewide attention at the time. Yvonne

    3. This is my favorite case and a pretty good local argument against capital punishment. This guy maintained his innocence of the crime. On her death bed, his mother confessed to having dressed up in his clothes and having done the crime. Whoopsie! I believe that this was the last capital case in Indiana County.
