I was able to locate Michael Sr., along with Michael Jr.,who appears on the 1860 census.. The boys in that family were Henry, Michael, and hartman. No Johns. The 1840 Census for Mahoning Township, prior to splitting up into 4 smaller townships, lists Michael Knauf, spelled Knoff, and John Knauf, spelled Knoff, 5 spaces apart on the census. The township was aparsly settled at that time, so the distance may not have been close. I had falsly assumed that this was the John Knauf of the 1871 map, but it appears that John of the 1840 census must have died by that time, because he was 40 and 50 in 1840. So is the John of the 1871 map the John of the 1860 census, and 14 at that time??? I don't know, but it doesn't appear that he would have been wealthy enough by 1870 to have paid to have his name included on the map at 24. I checked census up through 1860, should have checke! d the 1870 as well. Dick
I believe that Indiana County was formed from Westmore;land County in 1803. What was your ancestor's name?

I have access the 1850 census, but that year has no index on HeritageQuest. If someone can supply the page number I will look it up.
This is just a test, thanks.

I may ask you to cut, paste and resend if I don't see it soon. Also, do you have any idea about what a dude hat would look like? I wrote one about that and it didn't come through either. I have been sent an old letter written to a family member naming people in a photo taken of a Bartlebaugh Reunion in 1910. She was a young girl in the photo and telling a cousin many years later who was trying to name people. All she said was that David Strassler was wearing the Dude Hat. Now there are 5 people were hats in this photo and a search of a dude hat did not show up anything that I could use, I was wondering if anyone ever heard of this kind of hat and what it looked like. Must have been slang at that time. Any help appreciated. Elaine

Hello everyone, It has been a while since I have updated Treasures. First of all to let you know that I already know that the links for Greenwood and Oakland Cemeteries in White Twp Indiana Co PA don't work and neither does the links for Edgewood Cemetery in Conemaugh Twp Indiana Co PA. I do appreciate those who have emailed to let me know but I did that on purpose and will let you know when they are back up and in working order. This update is another mixture for several different states, some of you may not know but I am half Northern and half Southern, and I have to say that I think when you have ancestors from both parts of the country life is more interesting in doing research. Especially when you come from an interesting background such as mine and my half sister, who also is half northern and half southern also, we don't have the same father but are trying to prove that our fathers are related. In doing research it is amazing at what you find in your background that just adds all the more color to your family tree. Recently in trying to search down my one line I found an uncle and aunt who had actually gone to the courthouse and made out a deed for selling their slaves back in 1861, when I called the courthouse in Wakulla Co FL, they first told me the courthouse had burned in 1892 and that very few records had survived, but I told them that I knew this one had as someone else had seen it, so they dug it up for me and called me to let me know they had indeed found it and they had never seen such a document before themselves, although I'm sure most of us have heard of that these things went on. Copies of these documents are up on Treasures under the Bird/Byrd surname on the Florida page. We recently went and placed a Civil War marker at Bolivar, Fairfield Twp, Westmoreland Co, PA for a grandfather of ours by the name of Marshall L McDermott Sr. Earlier in May we placed two Revolutionary War markers in Antrim Twp, Franklin Co, PA for a grandfather Robert Clugston (Jane Huey's father) and an uncle John Clugston. We are hoping to soon send for a Revolutionary War marker for William Marshall Jr who is buried at Glade Run at Dayton PA. Also recently my sister, Marcia, my mother, Connie and I were in the Blairsville Dispatch for the 4th of July celebration. They had contacted us about doing an article on us and what we do and on the DAR, because my sister is a member. I have put this article along with the article that was done last October in the Indiana Gazette, up on the site for all to read. Both articles include photos. The History of Indiana County Her People Past and Present by Stewart is being transcribed and part of it has been put up on the Indiana County PA page of the site, along with some of the photos out of the book. I am hoping to now start working on the two Indiana County PA websites that I maintain and get them updated. And start on another update for Treasures as I have much more to add to the site.
