I've been spending allot of time looking through local newspapers but have only made it up to the 1860's. Has any looked though papers of the late 1870's to know if there was an outbreak of any disease, in the Indiana- Cambria area, that may have caused allot of deaths? Marcia Fronk
Randy--How much do you know about Shelocta area? My Henderson family lived there between 1840 and 1860. I am trying to find out about Sharp's Mill which was rebuilt by Joseph Henderson. I just can't find out if it is "MY" Joseph Henderson. Would appreciate anything you might know about the history of Shelocta. Thanks Leona Henderson
I believe at least in the Shelocta area it was diphtheria. My family research (McLaughlin) had at least 3 children die from it in November 1878 and 1 in March of 1879 although the 1879 death is not confirmed to be diphtheria. Randy in So. Good Luck Carla! Your work and sharing is very appreciated.
Good luck Carla. Your work is greatly appreciated.
Hello everyone, Just to give you an update. For those of you who don't know on August 23rd the hard drive in the server for PA-Roots crashed and all was taken down with it. On August 30th we started re-uploading the site and as of that night someone hacked into PA-Roots server and again all was gone. On September 1st we started re-uploading everything to the site. I'm sorry to say this is going to be a long process as the site is about 3GB in size and all I have is a dial up internet connection to put everything back online. The main page of Treasures is back up with some modifications as I don't have any links there for you to actually go into the site because I didn't want the e-mails coming in that links are not working. As for Treasures e-mail it is not working at this time either it was lost along with several e-mails people had sent to us. When everything is back up and online I will let you know, but as I stated earlier this is going to be a while as I work full-time and you have to be there to do the uploading. Because of Treasures being down the links on the Indiana County Gen Web that go to Treasures will not work as those items have not been reuploaded as of yet. Have a nice and safe Holiday Weekend! Or you related to another Harrison Hayes with a definite middle name of Harmon. Thompson and Marabey were my 3rd great grandparents through son Harrison and Harrison's daughter Rebecca Marby Hayes. If you are researching the same family, do you know who Elizabeth Colkitt's Hayes (Harrison's first wife) parents were? And, do you know who Harrison's second wife was? I have heard that Elizabeth also had a daughter named Addah who may have been born in early 1864. Since Harrison was away on Civil War duty in Virginia, was this child Harrison's or child of someone else? In my mother's family there were many strange tales about this family having "problems" and the grandparents taking on the care of their children. Never got anything near what the truth might have been until very recently when I was able to get a copy of Harrison's 2 letters from a military camp in VA to one of his sisters. In these letters he indicates trouble at home and staying in the service even though suffering a slight disability would be equal to going home at this time. He also mentions that he probably would not receive more mail from "Betsy". Can you shed any light on this family. Would like to communicate with people researching this family. I am particularly fascinated with the Hayes' family's tendency to give the males family/surnames as middle names. Looking at some of these surnames, one can find many of these families in New Jersey and Baltimore areas. Makes one wonder if they might not have come down through the female lines! Hope we can communicte on this line. Ginny

What do the letters SCD mean? I'm wondering if this could be Elizabeth's son whose name I have as Milton Samuel Rhodes and for whom I have been unable to find any information. Her husband, also a Samuel, was buried in Peotone Cemetery in Kansas. Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.
