That is the Hart homestead, built in about the late 1820s. It is currently owned by the Gennis (sp...sorry I don't have those notes here) family who lives across the road in the white house. If you are very polite and ask first, they might let you take a closer look, but they don't like trespassers (she told me a very funny story about running her tractor behind someone who just pulled down to the house and blocking their way out so they had to come and ask---pretty fiesty older woman! :-) ). The house is wonderful...after showing pictures to the architectural historian who is on my dissertation committee, she pointed out that what you think is the front of the house is actually the back. The walls are about 24 inches thick, with four rooms upstairs and four rooms down, though the owners don't let anyone go in there any more, because it is too run down. Part of the top of the roof came off in the storms of the last few years, so it is not likely to last very much longer. :-( There is a conveniently located spring with the remains of a stone spring house with two chambers...the spring is still running. I believe Hart is buried up at Ebenezer Church. If I find more in my notes at home, I'll send them. I can also send you images, if you'd like. The house was one that I targetted for my dissertation. By the way, if anyone knows of any very old houses like that still in the county, please let me know! I'd appreciate it. There are still some log houses in the county. I've recorded a few, but would love to find more. -Sonya Barclay On Mon, 25 Oct 2004, Kathleen Wolfe wrote: > Hello list: > > There is an old stone house on SR 3007 (Clarksburg Road that runs from > Newport Road to 286 at Clarksburg). Hi Kathleen, Not sure if this is the house you are referring to - I haven't been there since 1976 - But there is a very old stone house in Clarksburg - It is the oldest house in the town and was built by one of my ancestors -(GGGGrandfather) Samuel Marshall in the late 1700s. When I was last in it, it was owned by a retired Pittsburgh lawyer. I don't know who is there now... - I do remember that the inside was NOTHING like it must have been in the late 1700s... We find them as parents of the following children in the 1860 census for Pittsburgh PA: A., 9, b. abt 1851 in PA (Albert? John had a brother named Albert; he could have named this child after him) H., 7, b. abt. 1853 in PA J., 4, b. abt. 1856 in PA (James) C., 2, b. abt 1858 in PA. My gg grandfather had little recollection of his siblings, since his mother died in 1861 and he was placed in an orphanage or foster care.
