Martha, The last three notices are the same family, that of James RAGER, son of George RAGER & Sarah JUNKINS. I see that Barb already sent you the information about George W. This Nancy was George's mother. Her maiden name eludes me but I have a strong suspicion that she was a RAGER and cousin to her husband, James: James Rager, of Burrell township, died on Friday morning, aged 83 years. The deceased had been in the service of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company for a long period during his active years but for some time previous to his death had been on the retired list and also so receiving a pension from Andrew Carnegie. His wife, one son and four daughters survive. Indiana Progress Indiana, Pennsylvania Wednesday, June 15, 1904 Margaret Appleton was a daughter of James and Nancy. She was the second wife of William Appleton, who I believe was married first to Matilda Rager, a second cousin of Margaret's! Another daughter was Lucinda who never married: Miss Lucinda E. Rager died at the home of her sister, Mrs. Margaret Appleton, in Coral on Wednesday morning of last week, after an illness of about three weeks, in the 54th year of her age. She was a sister of Mrs. James Shearer and Mrs. James N. Sipes, of Blairsville. Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon by Rev. J.W. Shaffer, of Homer City, and interment was made at Hopewell. Indiana Messenger Indiana, Pennsylvania 22 April 1914 Front Page Mrs. Sipes was sister Martha: MRS. MARTHA A. SIPES, 81, widow of James N. Sipes, died at 7:24 p.m. Saturday in the home of Abbie Shearer, 354 Water street, Blairsville. A daughter of James and Nancy Rager, she was born in Homer City April 9, 1862. She was a member of the Hebron Lutheran Church. Survivng are a number of nieces and nephews. Services have been arranged for 2:00 p.m. Tuesday in Hunter Funeral Home, Blairsville, where friends are being received. The Rev. Dr. R.E. McClure, pastor of the Blairsville United Presbyterian Church, will officiate and interment will be in Blains Cemetery. Indiana Evening Gazette Indiana, Indiana Co., PA 12 July 1943 Sarah was Mrs. James Shearer. I don't have an obit for her (yet) but she died in 1937. I have this partial one for James: FOUR KILLED ON ___ THE RAILROAD James Shearer Cut in Two ___ Yards at Blairsville E.H. PINKERTON DIES OF INJURIES Theodore Barker Was Struck by a Train at New Florence and Died Instantly - Former Blairsville Boy Run Over at Millwood and Died Shortly After James Shearer, of Blairsville, was instantly killed in the West Penn railroad yards, at Blairsvile, about 8 oclock Saturday night. He was on his way home and was making a shortcut through the yards. The unfortunate man was walking between the tracks but evidently did not notice that the engine on one track was shoving _____ several cars on the adjoining track by ___ pole. The indications are that ___ was struck by the pole and knocked under the wheels. The engine and ___ loaded cars passed over him. The accident was not discovered until some papers were noticed strewn along the tracks. The crew went back and found Shearer with his body cut in two at the waist. The upper portion was lying on the outside of the track. The lower portion was between the rails. Coroner Davis was notified of the death. He went to Blairsville Monday morning and summoned the following jury: J.A. Shurm, P__ Hoffman, E.H. Thompson, Robert Reed and M.G. Miller. After examining the train crew, the jury brougth a verdict of accidental death, and found that the railroad company was in no way responsible for the same. James Shearer was 50 years of age. Eighteen years ago he was married to a daughter of James Rager, of Blaicklick township. He is survived by his wife and five children. The funeral services were held on Monday afternoon at 2. Interment was made in Blairsville cemetery. [need full obituary] Indiana County Gazette Indiana, Pennsylvania Wednesday, April 03, 1901 (1) 1 James S. I already had the 1900 & 1910 census info that you refer to and I need to correct a few things. The census record is difficult to read. John S. Davis was born Mar 1857 not 1837 and his wife Martha (Anderson) was born in Jun 1858. Their eldest son is Logan Lee Davis, not Taggart. It looks like Taggart on the record. The John Davis listed in Clymer in 1930 may indeed be the correct John Davis. The obituary for Logan Lee Davis published on 2 Dec 1936 stated that Logan had a brother John E. Davis in Clymer. Although his age is listed as 32 not 35, which is consistent with Elizabeth's current age and age at marriage. I think the key is connecting their daughter, Helen M. Davis to picture. Perhaps someone out their can find an obit for John E. Davis in the Indiana Papers. He died 5 Jun 1972. If this John had a wife named Elizabeth, perhaps he is buried with John at Greenwood. The only candidate is an Elizabeth Mott Davis who died on 27 Nov 1988. No birthdate is listed. The Social Security Death Index has an Elizabeth M. Davis, born 17 Oct 1897 and died 27 Nov 1988 in State College, PA. If this is the same Elizabeth that is listed in the 1930 Clymer census then her age is also off by 3 years. Elizabeth Mott was daughter of Alton Mott & Marie Sterling and is found with her parents in Jefferson Co, PA in 1900; Cambria Co., PA in 1910 and Pine Twp., Indiana Co., PA in 1920. A listing on Rootsweb world Connect has her married to a John Davis about 1917 (which is an error since she is found with her parents, single, in 1920). Martha, Florence is a descendant of Hugh JUNKINS. Her father, Hugh W. RAGER was son of Hugh RAGER & Mary DAUGHTERTY (who died in the horrible fire accident.) This Hugh was a son of George RAGER and Sarah JUNKINS, d/o of Hugh JUNKINS. Are you with me? With the naming traditions, both JUNKINS sisters (Agnes and Sarah) who married RAGER brothers (John & George) named a son Hugh after their father. The two Hugh RAGER grandsons of Hugh JUNKINS were first cousins, and very close in age. To complicate matters further, both married girls named Mary with similar last names. Hugh B. RAGER, son of Agnes, married Mary DONAHEY. Hugh RAGER, son of Sarah, married Mary DAUGHERTY. All of the research I have seen online combines the cousins into one Hugh. Anyway, the daughter of Florence & Lloyd died last year. Her obit: DIETZ - Lillian L., 91, Stonycreek Township, died May 28, 2006, at Select Specialty Care, Johnstown. Born Oct. 22, 1914, in Barnesboro, daughter of the late Lloyd and Florence (Rager) Mock-Deckert. Preceded in death by stepfather, Ed Deckert; husband, Paul; son, Robert; and son-in-law, Harold Peterson. Survived by daughter, Winona "Nonie" Peterson, with whom Mrs. Dietz resided; granddaughter, Carol Grasser, and fiance, David Smith; grandson, Donald Grasser; and great-grandson, Cody Grasser, all of Johnstown. Martha, I believe Effie is the only one of your posts who does not descend from Johann Michael ROGER/RAGER. This more complete obit ran in the Progress and I was able to track them through the census Effie was a granddaughter of Samuel Frederick REEGER & Sarah Salome BUSH. She was one of 12 children, her father Henry was one of 10. The REEGER/REGER/RAGER spelling variations was just another challenge in sorting out the families. Kathryn Doyle Piedmont, CA AT YOUNG TOWNSHIP SCHOOL HOUSE Playing Two Girls Fell, One Receiving Injuries That Caused Her Death Pretty Effie Rager, 16 years old, and a pupil at the Kennedy school in Young township, died December 15, as the result of injuries received eight weeks previous while playing with a schoolmate. She and Etta Kinter were running in the yard when Effie tripped and fell, her companion falling upon her. Both girls got to their feet apparently none the worse for the accident but a few days later Effie complained of pain from bruises on her body. Internal trouble developed and her death followed an illness of eight weeks. The Rager family lives in Young township. It is composed of the parents, four girls and six boys. Effie was a favorite with the family and among the young people of the neighborhood. Funeral services were held at her late home on Thursday morning by Rev. Findley of Jacksonville, and interment was made in Greenwood cemetery that afternoon. The pall bearers were six girls, members of Effies Sunday school class at Lewisville church. They were Misses Mary Sneedy, Hannah [end missing]. Hi Martha, I have some answers for all the Ragers you posted together. I'll start with the last. I think that Charles D. RAGER (1845-1939) was the son of Daniel M. RAGER and Esther EVANS. There are several obits available for the children of Dan & Esther listed on the Trib obit index but I don't have any except a partial for Charles so this remains an educated guess. Maybe some reseachers of Dan's line can chime in. According to several WorldConnect databases, Margaret was the daughter of Thomas Charles HENDERSON (1802-1867) and Nancy Agnes BOYD (1810-1857). I find it very strange that they had two daughters named Margaret that lived to adulthood & had children but evidently it is correct?! Michael Caldwell has an obit for Margaret's sister that gives her married name: http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=michaelscaldwell&id=I14520 Indiana, PA Indiana Weekly Messenger issue of Thursday, 8 February 1917, p. 5, col. 3: Mrs. Lucy E. Treasure, wife of James Treasure, died at her home in Bolivar Saturday and her funeral took place Tuesday afternoon, services being conducted by the Rev. George Grant, pastor of the Bolivar M.E. church. Mrs. Treasure was a sister of Mrs. Charles D. Rager whose death occurred near Greensburg, on January 25, and whose remains were taken to Johnstown for burial. Mrs. Treasure was born in Fairfield township, Westmoreland county, on December 5, 1845. She is survived by her husband, two daughters, three sons, and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Michael also gives Margaret's obituary: Mrs. Margaret Rager, of Bolivar, died in Greensburg, Friday, January 26th. The remains were taken to Johnstown and interred there on Sunday. Mrs. James Treasure, her sister, died on Saturday, January 17th, at her home in Bolivar, of pneumonia, and was buried in the cemetery at that place on Tuesday. Indiana Weekly Messenger issue of Thursday, 8 February 1917, p. 5, col. 5 Charles D. RAGER evidently divorced Margaret and married Rachael M. Rager On Monday Death of Charles D. Rager, 96, of 478 Fairfield Avenue, Lower Yoder Township at 1:40 oclock yesterday afternoon leaves only two surviving veterans of the Civil War in Cambria County. Mr. Rager had been ill for the last six weeks. His last public appearance was on Flag Day, June 14, when he was one of the two guests of honor, together with Henry B. Hoffman, now residing on Grove Avenue. The two veterans were tendered an ovation of the patriotic exercies at the Point Stadium following the parade, in which they rode. The other surviving Civil War veteran in the county is Silas D. Plummer, residing with a son near Wilmore. Charles D. Rager served in Company F., 131 Pennsylvania Cavalry, during the war between the states. He enlisted February 24, 1864, and was honorably discahared July 14, 1865. He was once injured in service. Returing to Johnstown after the war, Mr. Rager entered the employ of the old Cambria Iron Company and was one of the old time puddlers. He resided in Rosedale for a number of years before moving to Morrellville, 48 years ago. He resided on Enterprise Street for a number of years. Last of Large Family Mr. Rager was one of a family of 13 children and is the last of his immediate family to pass away. He was born near Chickaree schoolhouse, Jackson Township - [section missing] - children. One son, L.J. Rager and two daughters, Mrs. H.G. Ortner and Mrs. H.C. Faust preceded their father in death. One-time City Employee Retiring from the mills a number of years ago, Mr. Rager became a city employe and continued at work in that copacity for 10 years. For a time afterward he was a fireman for the Harris-Boyer Bakery Company, Morrellville. He retired 21 years ago. Until the last year, Mr. Rager enjoyed excellent health and was frequently seen down town. Funeral services are to be held at the Garfield Street Evangelical Church at 2:30 oclock Monday afternoon, Rev. R.R. Doverspike, pastor, will officiate. Interment will be in Benshoff Cemetery, directed by Stephen J. Conway, mortician. Rager they are referring to: A Matrimonial Meddle Margaret Rager, wife of Charles D. Rager was Thursday committed to the jail of Cambria county on a preliminary hearing before "Squire Fisher, in which the charge was docketed adultery. The information was made by Mr. John Rager, brother of Charles and from the evidence adduced it seems that Margaret left her home in Cambria borough about the 3rd of March last in company with a somewhat notorious individual of Prospect named Patrick Scott. The Johnstown Tribune gives the following particulars: They commenced housekeeping at Cokerton, a village nearly a mile distant from Blairsville, and seemed to be enjoying the situation up until yesterday when Constable Harris arrested the woman upon a warrant to give bail for her appearance, in the sum of $200, so 'Squire Fisher committed her, and she was taken to the county prison last evening by Deputy Sheriff Kinkead, to await a trial by jury. Patrick Scott is a very bad man, and it is a great pity that he cannot be properly punished for his misdoings. About six years ago he was married to a female who went by the name of "Moll Scott," but who had a husband living in Blairsville. The ceremony of uniting them in wedlock was illegal, as a matter of course, but the young man to whom she was legally married took advantage of her bigamous transaction, and procured a divorce. (Indiana Weekly Messenger 1881 May 4.) I love the way everything was blamed on Margaret, like Patrick was innocent. Martha

They lived near each other in Bedford County and moved to Indiana County about the same time. Buterbaugh and Bartlebaugh girls married into the same family. After Y-DNA testing 3 Bartlebaughs, we found that the one Bartlebaugh that had gone by the name Purtlebaugh in 1700s was from the same family and connect in the mid 1700s. That was the result we were after. Then the results showed that Bartlebaugh was not part of the Puterbaugh or Buterbaugh family line. Then we tested 2 Buterbaughs, 2 Puterbaughs and 1 Puderbaugh. I know this is a small number of people but we did get interesting results. I am puting here the letter written by one the people tested that will explain some importanting information that might change the direction of your research. In short, the Md Puterbaughs are a whole different family than the New Jersey Puterbaughs and the various spellings that they use. For many years Dan kept trying to find a connection and now we know that there is not one unless you go back maybe 10,000 years. They do have the same Haplogroup and probably came from the same general area in Europe. UpDate on Puterbaugh/Buterbaugh DNA If you have read Julia Marshall?s info on genform re Buterbaugh/Puterbaugh DNA participants, you know that there were two individuals (#1 & #2 below) who matched 35/37. Following are the five unnamed participants: #1 ? A Buterbaugh who has a paper trail to Johann Peter Puterbaugh, the immigrant. #2 ? A Puterbaugh who has a paper trail to George Puterbaugh, the immigrant. #3 ? Me . . Dan Puterbaugh who has a paper trail to George Poterbach, b ca 1757. #4 ? A Buterbaugh who has a paper trail to an ancestor, b 1810. #5 ? A Puderbaugh who has a paper trail to George Poterbach, b ca 1757. #1 & #2 match 35/37, but NOT the other three. #3 & #5 match 35/37, but NOT the other three. #4 doesn?t match any of the others. Early researchers felt there were only two immigrants ? Johann Peter & his brother, George ? and anyone with the varied spelling of the surname descended from those two fellows. We?re told that DNA doesn?t lie; thus, the DNA results above should be proof that there were more immigrant Puterbaugh/Buterbaugh lines than just Johann Peter & George. Following is information re the ancestry of #5 and me. Records of the Knowlton, NJ, Presbyterian Church lists the baptisms of George Henrich, Joseph, JOHANNES, Andrew and Joseph.
