    3. Hi! It is so hard to get records on any of these cemeteries, the old ones in particular. We have not done the RV cemetery but would like to at least do the old part as several of our people are buried there and probably some we don't know of. We will not do the new part. That is just too much and there are other records today to look at. I do know that Oscar Marshall who wrote the Marshall History is buried there as I found his stone while walking thru the old part. It will probably be sometime late ssmmer before we can get to it. Actually the two cemeteries that we did from records as well as from tombstones were Oakland and Greenwood in Indiana. Some of the lsitings we have are from others who did them many years ago and the cemeteries themselves are gone. Yes, i know it is against the law to do away with them but it is done just the same. That is why old records or any records are better than nothing. At least it can give you a starting place. 1. [PAINDIAN] James V. Murray - 1900's to 1930's - Heilwood/Pittsburgh
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: RMurray99 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.pennsylvania.counties.indiana/6287/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I am searching for information regarding my grandfather, James V. Murray. James disappeared sometime around 1928-1930's. He was married to Gertrude Rodgers (1904-1963), with whom he had two sons, James Murray, 1925 & Edward Murray, 1927. After James disappeared Gertrude and her sons lived with Gerturde's parents, Lawrence Rodgers (1875-1963) & Katherine Judge (1875-1949) in Heilwood, Pine Twp., Indiana Co., PA. My father was always told that James had died around 1928 and that he was buried in Allegheny Co. Cem in Pittsburgh. My father visited that cemetery and found that they have no record of a James Murray. The family and friends were always extremely evasive when it came to discussing James. Most of them are all now dead. A search of the Indiana papers suggests that my grandmother, Gertrude Rodgers Murray, went by here married name up through Feb 1930, after which she and here children were always referred to by her maiden name, Rodgers. In 1930 she entered nursing school in Indiana, PA where she worked for the next 24 years. The name change may suggest that they were divorced. If James had died I would have expected Gertrude to keep her married name. In fact my father always thought that his last name was Rodgers and it wasn't until he entered the Navy that he found out that it was actually Murray. My father also says that he was told that James was born in England and that he lived in Pittsburgh. James and Gertude's first son, James was born in Pittsburgh. My father also says that has father may have been a metallurgist with Bethlehem Steel and that he may have been somehow connect to a payroll heist at the Bethlehem mines in Heilwood. If the latter were true I would have expected some mention of it in the Indiana paper, but I have yet to see anything. Not much to go on but perhaps some old timer in Heilwood may know something. 2. MaryLee Smith
    3. Hello again ;-) When I wrote this a.m. re: my BECK ancestors (Gottfried, Christina, & family), I neglected to mention that one of the daughters (Clara) married an ALCORN but we don't know who. We also don't know if she was thus related, via marriage, to the young ALCORN who was killed in that tragic train accident (1909). We do know that there was a 'niece' of our gr-grandfather, Henry F. BECK (Johann Heinrich Frierich Beck) -- her name was Florence ALCORN, & she was about 60? in 1940? It is believed that she had a farm in the Blairsville area.... There was also a Clara ALCORN (born 1910) whom we believe to be a relative. Our info is very sketchy. If anyone on this List is researching, or has researched, BECK or ALCORN.... Thx ;-) \MaryLee [Phx.]

    1. [PAINDIAN] BECK
    2. MaryLee Smith
    3. Hello Listers -- I am new to this List but have belonged to the PAALLEGH for several years -- I'm assuming the rules are the same? I am researching my BECK ancestors: gr-grandfather, Gottfried (Godfrey) gr-grandmother, Christiane (Christina) Elizabeth [nee Stoug] their children: my grandfather, Johann Heinrich Friedrich (later in life was known as Henry F. Beck); Anna Dorothea (Dora) Wilhelm Carl (Charles) Johann Robert Elizabeth Clara The family emigrated from German (Bremen port) in 1856. I have them living in the 'borough of Indiana, Indiana County' per the 1870 census; not sure where in Indiana County they are located in 1880, but the parents & some of the children were still at home there in Indiana County per that census data. Gottfried/Godfrey BECK was a carpenter. My gr-grandfather, Henry F. (formerly Johann Heinrich Friedrich) served a few months in the 57th PA Militia during the Civil War, & from the wording in his obituary (1929), it sounds like he left Indiana County at that time & possibly never returned to live there. He met/married one Anna Mary LOGAN of Pittsburgh & they raised their family & lived in Pittsburgh all of their married life. Per obits of others of Henry's siblings, Robert remained in Delmont, & sister, Dora, died in Pgh., but was returned to Saltsburg for burial (it doesn't state the cemetery). Other older family members remember traveling from Pgh. to visit 'a cemetery in Blairsville' as children. So we are fairly certain that Godfrey/Christina BECK are buried in Indiana County, as well as some of their children. Thank you in advance for any info, data, leads, advice. \MaryLee Smith [living in Phx. AZ since 1964, but my heart still lies in Western PA]

Author: RMurray99 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.pennsylvania.counties.indiana/6286.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: 2 Feb 1910 - Indiana Evening Gazette - Charles Palmer was arrested today on the charge of statutory rape on information mad by Annie Hill. In default of bail he was committed to jail for a hearing before Squire Crossman on Saturday. Both reside in Blacklick. 5 Feb 1910 - Indiana Evening Gazette - Charles Palmer, who had a hearing on the charge of staturtory rape, before Squire Crossman this morning, was committed to jail for trial before the March term of court. 9 Mar 1910 - Indiana Evening Gazette - MARCH COURT IS NOW IN SESSION - ... The troubles of Charles Palmer and his family of Blacklick, resulted in the finding of true bill against Palmer on a charge of statutory rape, Annie Hill being the prosecutrix; a true bill against Emma Palmer charged with assault with intent to murder, felonious attempt to murder and aggravated assault and battery; a true bill against Charles and Emma Palmer, charged with furnishing liquor to minors on Sunday. 23 Mar 1910 - Indiana County Gazette - EMMA PALMER IS FOUND GUILTY - Blacklick Woman Convicted of Aggravated Assault and Battery - CHARLES THE HUSBAND GET OFF LIGHTLY - Prosecution Fails to Make Good in the Two Liquor Cases - CONVICTIONS IN SPENSER CASE - ... The cases in which Charles and Emma Palmer, of Blacklick, appeared as defendants were concluded Thursday night, and the public is a unit in its opinion that this precious pair was treated leniently by the three juries which sat in judgement upon them. Most of the time of Thursday's day sessions was consumed in the trial of Charles Palmer on a charge of rape. The amount of nastiness developed in this was appalling and everybody concerned was disgusted with the details brought out. The jury after remaining out for a long time returned a verdict convicting the defendant of fornication. Late in the day the third case in the nauseating series, that in which the Palmers were charged with furnishing liquor to a minor and on Sunday, was tried, and an acquittal followed, the costs being put upon the county. On Wednesday afternoon when the case of the Commonwealth vs. Mrs. Emma Palmer was called it was found that there were not enough jurors to supply the challenge, and Sheriff Thomas was instructed to go out and summon 20 additional talesmen. After a delay of about 15 minutes and Sheriff had the men in court and the selection of jury was completed. The dearth of jury material was due to the fact that two juries were out on other cases at the time. The case next called was a sensational one and attracted wide-spread interest. It is on of several growing out of the marital troubles of Charles Palmer and Emma Palmer, of Blacklick. In this case Emma Palmer is the defendant and the indictment against here contains five counts as follows: 1st - Assault with intent to murder; 2d-felonious attempt to murder; 3d-Assaulting with intent to maim and disfigure; 4th-Aggravated assault and battery; 5th- Assault and battery. It is charged that the defendant shot her husband with a small rifle as he lay on a bed in their home. Jealousy is said to have prompted the alleged crime. Evidence was presented on Tuesday afternoon and evening and the case was presented to the jury the first thing this morning. The arguing of the case to the jury and Judge Telford's charge occupied all of the afternoon until 10:45. The jury after deliberating on the case for three hours returned a verdict convicting Mrs. Palmer on the fourth count of the indictment, charging aggravated assault and battery.
