Can someone explain to me if Hopewell Township, Huntingdon County and Hopewell Township, Bedford County are the same Townhship? Was Hopewell Township at one time all in Bedford County until Huntingdon County was formed from Bedford? At that time did part of Hopewell Township become part of Huntingdon County while part of Hopewell Township remained in Bedford? Ralph nearhoof@nb.net
Hi Ralph: According to "Pennsylvania Line, 4th ed., there are six Hopewell Townships in PA. Hopewell in Bedford was formed in 1773 from Barree Township. Hopewell in Huntingdon was formed in 1787 (no original township mentioned). Interesting...Barree Township in now Huntingdon, was formed 1767 while part of Cumberland Co. Is that confusing enough? Looking at a county map of PA, in 1770 there are only 8 counties in all of PA and Cumberland was huge covering at least one third of the state.
