I had no trouble accessing this and spent a couple hours getting some very good information. I suspect that the site may only be for cardholders with that particular library. We can access Heritage Quest through our library, by entering our library code. I think our library pays for this data based on number of cardholders. We can access this site directly from our home computers. It might be a good idea to check with your own libraries to see if you can get access to Heritage Quest through them and also access to other data bases. For Ancestry we have access but must go into the library and use their computers--no at home computer access. This isn't just the index, but EVERY PAGE, with most very readable! You might be able to find information, obituaries, etc. It has the complete New York Times, (including the classified) from 1851-2001! > Clicking on "Heritage quest Online" will get you census and books to search. > > | It works like this: > | First, go to -- http://riversideregionallibrary.org > | Second, click on "ProQuest Historical New York Times" OR HeritageQuest Online > | Third, use the guest password here, which is: welcome > | Fourth, click on "ProQuest Historical New York Times" again. Dick Eastman reported on abuse perpetrated by someone in Michigan that caused Ancestry.com to not allow access through home computers (via patron library card numbers using the library gateway). Ancestry had apparently allowed one library in Michigan to try this (as HeritageQuestonline does) and one person spread abroad the information needed to access the databases. Because it was obvious that something like this had happened when jillions of people started accessing ancestry remotely, they shut down this type of access and I'm afraid will be hard pressed to attempt it again in the future. <<I suspect that the site may only be for cardholders with that particular library.
