I am beginning to think this may be a hoax. When I click I get a local library in Missouri and there is nothing on the page that I can find about heritage quest or New York Times. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jan Smith" <aaf@alltel.net> To: <PAHUNTIN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, November 13, 2003 9:27 PM Subject: Re: [PAHUNTIN] Research Help for Census or New York Times > have not had any luck getting on this site tonight in fact the ProQuest > Historical ---- and Heritage Quest blocks do not come up. No, it was not a hoax, I used it several days. Apparently, what happened was, someone shared the free trail with everyone and his brother and people like me who didn't know that it was a private free trail also passed on the information and when Ancestry.com found out that a zillion people were signing onto the site under one free trail period set up by a library they pulled the plug. Unfortunately, you can't use the passed on information any longer. I have been informed however, that your local library may be a subscriber of this service and you may be able to either sign on to it at the library or by linking to them at home if you have an active library card. You would need to check with your local library about this. In regard to the "free access" through a library site, it is not at all free. Some time ago, a similar message made its rounds and the result was the same as it was this time. Libraries (not sure if all) are given free access to particular sites from computers within their research areas. Usually a generic user id and password are required to access the site which designates where access is being made from. In most cases, limits are set on the amount of visitors from each library. Once that quota has been reached, access is terminated. That's one scenario. Another is the quota is reached and the library is billed for access to the pay site for the number of visits over the offered quota. Most libraries simply discontinue access rather than pay for access. Particularly at this time (at least in PA) libraries are really struggling. It would be a shame to have libraries billed for services that they are providing and have no knowledge if providing. If everybody keeps in mind that nothing in life is free, it will sure help ease the financial strains on libraries. Debbie - Thanks for this. I think that the person was obviously motivated by a desire to help - he had nothing else to gain. I don't think he or she probably considered it stealing. It is too bad that we all can't have access to these sites. The demand is certainly there. Our local library does not offer these services - and I doubt they will because of the wide availability genealogy materials in this valley. No, most libraries limit participation to their own cardholders. You have to have a library card with that library and the cardholder's number allows you to access the data base. norma <norma@sheltonbbs.com> wrote:I am beginning to think this may be a hoax. No, this was not a hoax. It was on there until Tuesday. I believe they took it off due to the overwhelming response that people went there after learning about it. I personally had 3 nice days of searching. ----- Original Message ----- From: "norma" <norma@sheltonbbs.com> To: <PAHUNTIN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, November 13, 2003 10:24 PM Subject: Re: [PAHUNTIN] Research Help for Census or New York Times > I am beginning to think this may be a hoax.
