    3. DAVE and/or anyone else that also might have an opinion, I sure do appreciate your information below. I am still a little uncomfortable saying that the "shurlock" is the twp of Shirley, although I had thought of that possibility. Whoever wrote the document might have been spelling phonetically, and whoever pronounced the word might not have spoken clearly. But the word "Shurlock" is written 3 times that way throughout the whole document. I got a magnifying glass to get even a closer look, but that is what is written. But, if the person was not perhaps a good speller that did the writing back in 1785, I wonder then if the "Wgaws" might have been his personal abbreviation for Aughwick??? What do you think.....do you think I am grasping at straws here :~)? It's nice to get other opinions. thanks, Kathy Wells. ----- Original Message ----- From: <DLutz22901@aol.com> To: <rebeltrumpet@sbcglobal.net> Sent: Saturday, April 05, 2003 12:49 PM Subject: Warrant inquiry > Three Springs Creek, Maddensville, Shirleysburg, and Aughwick Creek are all > located in southern Huntingdon County, PA. I need help! I have a land warrant that I just got, that I had ordered. These 'Browns' were in Cumberland County, then it became Bedford Co, then finally Huntingdon Co. I would love a little help, if possible, deciphering some of the places listed. I don't know if anyone is familiar with the area, but below is how the warrant reads and the words in parenthesis are the ones I can not make out. One question is, is the town of Shurlock still around? And, does anyone recognize the places, or can anyone fill in the spaces that I can't read? I'm hoping, someone might be familiar with the way these are supposed to read and the area. Later the area they lived in was called Maddensville, and Shirleysburg, or very near that on the Aughwich Creek, I believe. Thanks, Kathy Wells. [ It is titled: 1785 Oct 31, Danl, Joshua & James Brown. This is what it says: Daniel Brown makes application for four hundred acres of land on the Hills adjoining the mouth of the three spring creek on the north side of said creek in (Shurlock) twp. Joshua Brown makes application for four hundred acres of land laying on (Broad Coles Junn) Spring branch and adjoinning a tract known by the name of (Wgaws) land in Shurlock Twp. James Brown makes application for two hundred and ninty acres of land laying on the north side of the (Wgaws) ( ___) flows at the foot of Jacks Mountain in Shurlock Twp. Signed by justices of Bedford Co. Oct 6, 1785-Hugh Davison. ] Kathy & David Wells 425 Evergreen Dr., Hurst, Texas 76054 rebeltrumpet@sbcglobal.net
