THOMAS MERIDITH Attorney in fact for SAMUEL MERIDITH August 19th, 1806 ----------------------------------------------- In our last, we noticed the robbery and horrid murder of Mr. Peter Eshelman of this county; since which several persons have been apprehended and committed, on suspicion of being perpetrators and accessories in this wicked transaction. On Saturday last John Swan (a German) and his wife (a black woman) with Samuel Grimson, were safely lodged in the prison of this place; and on Thursday last, James Jamison, and James Magowan (who were taken up in Berks county) were likewise brought up to this gaol. From their several examinations, which have taken place before their honors Judge Henry and Spayd, circumstances appear unfavorable to the accused. The above criminals are, we are told, old offenders. Jamison is supposed to be the same person who robbed Benjamin Wallace, Esq., of Hanover, some years since, and burnt the house of a Mr. M'Faddin in this neighborhood. [Oracle of Dauphin.] -------------------------------------------------------------- Reading, 6th September On Saturday last, the 30th August, two men were taken up, on suspicion of not being justly possessed of a mare, &c other property with them--they were taken before a magistrate, and examined separately, when a different account respecting themselves, induced the magistrate to commit them both to the gaol of this place. On Monday last, at a second hearing one of them confessed, that they had some few days since together, robbed a man of 500 dollars, near Middletown in Dauphin county, proceeded then as far as within ten miles of this place, and there purchased said mare, saddle, saddlebags, and other property in their possession. Whether they did more than tie and beat the man from whom they robbed the money (by the confession of the above) is not yet ascertained.--The other of the two, apparently a harder wretch, was not long before convicted for theft in this place and sentenced to hard labor, from which he had but lately got clear. ------------------------------------------ The Huntingdon Troop of Light Dragoons are hereby ordered to meet at their usual parade ground in the Borough of Huntingdon, at the hour of 10 in the morning of the first Monday of October next, fully equipped for exercise. Punctual attendance of all the members is required. By order of the Captain, JAMES CANAN 1st Serjeant 20th Sept, 1806 ----------------------------------------- Agreeably to an order of the Hon. Orphans Court for Huntingdon County, will be exposed to public sale on the premises on the first Monday in November next a GRIST & SAW-MILL plantation or tract of valuable Land, with sundry improvements, containing, in two adjoining surveys, 255 acres.
