Helen, Do you have the children of Joseph and Sarah (Wilson) HALL? I have a Richard Carlet HALL who was born in 1818 -- time frame & place are right. Also, do you know from which WILSON family Sarah descends? His obituary follows. Kathryn Doyle Piedmont, CA Richard Hall, the oldest resident in Shirley township, died on Friday Oct. 14th at his home in Germany Valley. Mr. Hall suffered a stroke several weeks ago and from that time until his death he remained in a critical condition. The deceased was born in Hill Valley Mar. 5, 1818. He spent his boyhood days in that part of Shirley township, and at the age of 12 years he came into Germany Valley and there entered the employ of Jacob Spanogle, who was the great-grandfather of the writer. In his day, Jacob Spanogle was one of the prominent farmers of Germany Valley. Mr. Hall remained with Mr. Spanogle for about 8 years. He married Miss Mary Wilson of near Shade Gap in 1849, and took up residence at the old woolen mill in Germany Valley. In 1852 he moved to the farm where he died, he having purchased that tract situated along the eastern side of Johntown Ridge. There, Mr. Hall cleared the land and became instrumental in laying out some of the public highways through the valley. His wife died Oct. 6, 1863. His children are: Thos. H. (deceased), formerly of Illinois; Rachel Jane (deceased); Margaret Belle Craig, formerly of Bolivar, Pa.: Jno. W., of Galesburg, Ill.; Richard C., Jr. of near McVeytown; J. Elliott of Brockwayville, Pa.; Rhoda Ann (deceased), wife of I.W. Nearhood; Mary Elizabeth who died in infancy. Mr. Hall’s funeral was held on Sunday afternoon in charge of Rev. Chas. Griffin of Shirleysburg. There were a number of neighbors and friends in attendance to pay their last respects to the memory of this venerable resident of Shirley township. More than an octogenarian by nearly 13 years, for Mr. Hall had reached the age of almost 93 years. Thus he rounded up a long life of usefulness as a farmer, and the fact of his long life is a lesson to the most of us whose careers are given to the stenuosity of this age, for in the quiet, peaceful life of the deceased and his regularity of living, the functions of his body did their work well for almost a century. His remains were interred at the Bethel Cemetery in Germany Valley. Undertaker Dunmire conducted the funeral.
