from Steve Kemp. My suggestion would be that you contact someone at the Mount Union Area Historical Society who may know who wrote that piece in the 1976 booklet, and what source[s] was used for putting it together. I only know that there were no townships organized in this region until the year 1767, which is not to say that Cumberland County never had a record of land ownership out on its frontier. The published PENNSYLVANIA ARCHIVES might be a place to do a search for such information. It is likely that any land that had an expensive improvement on it was both warranted and patented at an earlier date so that absolute title could be secured. Those papers should be available at the State Archives in Harrisburg, PA; I believe that there are warrants that date as early as 1756 from some parts of the Juniata Valley, such as Aughwick and Standing Stone.
