I'm hoping someone may have some ideas. I have learned from her obituary that she was "born in Black Log, Huntingdon and came here (Newport, Perry Co., PA) as a young girl". Her marriage notice in the newspaper has her surname as "M'Gervey". Our family records have it as "McGarvey". But I have searched and searched every possible spelling I can think of and cannot find her in ANY census records before her marriage. She should be in the 1860 and 1870 census records!!! Does anyone have any idea how to find people in census records when you aren't sure of the surname? I have looked for all Harriet/Harriett of her age and found nothing that matches her. The Harriet McGee that shows up is not her. Thanks so much for any help, Elizabeth ---------------------------- [My post in 2003} Is it possible to find an ancestor if I am not sure of the last name? I am trying to find my great-grandmother but cannot find even a trace of her before her marriage so I am thinking the last name I have for her could be wrong. I have this information: Harriet M McGarvey born Jan. 1, 1854 in Black Log, Huntingdon County, PA. She died in Harrisburg, PA in 1933. She married Solomon Zeigler in 1872. I cannot find ANY Harriet McGarvey in any census before her marriage in 1872. I am positive that the Harriet M is correct but maybe her last name isn't McGarvey. Is there a way to search other surnames that start with Mc, McG, etc to try to find her that way? Also, what Township would Black Log be in? Thank you.
In the 1850 census of Shirley twp, Huntingdon County, there is a David, Simon, Thomas and William McGarvey, all in Shirley Twp, and all of the right age to have a child in 1854. If your local library has ancestry.com, you could read the 1860 Shirley twp to see if anyone has a Harriet. Or, a more basic approach, by 1933 her death certificate should have named her parents. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, June 14, 2006 10:28 PM Subject: [PAHUNTIN] Blacklog,Huntingdon Co>Perry Co.>Dauphin Co PA > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Surnames: McGarvey/McGarvy/McGervey/McGervy/Zeigler/Ziegler/Zigler > Classification: Query > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/ZdB.2ACI/3539 > > Message Board Post: > > It has been 3 years since I posted my request (below) and I am STILL > unable to find my ggrandmother, Harriet M. ??? Hi, Thank you for your prompt reply. I have already checked those four men in the 1860 and 1870 census records and none have a Harriet or a daughter of her age. Her death certificate lists both of her parents names as "unknown". It seems strange to me that Harriett's daughter, who seems to be the one who provided the info for the death certificate, would not have known her mother's parents names.
