I've been using a computer for 15 years, but just began emailing. Anyway I thought I emailed Kim but Carey replied so I'll answer Carey. You're right about Mabel's obit. not mentioning an out of wedlock daughter, but here is Josephine Manges' obituary from the Baltimore Sun Newspaper....Josephine Burkett Manges, 79 died Wednesday morning, Feb. 6, 1991, at Villa St. Michael's Nursing Home, Baltimore, MD. She was born June 26, 1911 in Altoona, daughter of the late Mabel O. Medling, and was the adopted daughter of the late Charles and Elsie Burkett of Bedford. She was a graduate of Bedford High School, worked at a department store and was a homemaker. She married Josiah W. Manges of Bedford on April 4, 1931 in Bedford. Her husband died July 18, 1984. She is survived by two daughters: Mrs. Donna Wick of Westminster, Calif. and Mrs. Elsie Walker of Baltimore; a son, Joel Manges of Pasadena, MD; and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Fu! neral services were held Feb 7 in Brooklyn Park, MD., with burial at Cedar Hill Cemetery, Baltimore [the end of obit.] Josephine's real father was not mentioned because at that time someone had said it was Joseph Rohrer in Ohio who had a Josephine born June 13, 1911 [compare the Brown Tp., Carroll Co, Ohio 1920 census entry with the Charlie and Elsie Burket entry in Bedford, Bedford Co.,PA with their 'daughter' Josephine (by the way, my wife was named after this Elsie Burket)]. If you're wondering about Mabel in 1920 you'll have to look in Johnstown City, Cambria Co.,PA under Leroy Elsworth, which marriage had about 6-7 years left before Mabel divorced and married Fred Sauers and moved to Ohio. I have a lot more information. Oh, and Josephine and her husband told me (on tape) her father was Carl Roar, and 'Roar' is on her marriage license, which I have a copy.
