Edward Christopher Fritchey (b 25Aug1834; d 18Sept1927)and Adolphina Carolina Richter (b 9Aug1836; d 26Aug1921) were married November 18, 1856, in Snakes Spring Valley, Bedford County, PA. They settled in Tatesville where the first five of their children were born. The family attended St. James Lutheran Church in Huntingdon. Frank and Edward Andrew (my ggrandfather) worked for the Huntingdon and Broad Top Railroad as carpenters. Edward, Adolphina, and children Anna Lena, David and Richard are all buried in Riverview Cemetery Edward and Adolphina's headstones show incorrect birth dates. The above dates are correct. Their children: Frank (29Mar1858) Samuel B. (29Apr1859 - 3Nov1924 Edward Andrew (4July1860 - 29Oct1946) William Clemens (25Nov1861 - 18Oct1862) Julius Anton (20Jan1863 - 12Jan1872) Mary Jane (23May1864 - 28May1911) Charles Clemens (26Apr1866) Anna Lena (26Mar1868 - 2Apr1881) William Harry (27July1870 - 16Mar1958) David Richard R. I don't know why there are no birth dates for David and Richard, but I will bet they were never recorded and/or no headstones. If they have headstones, there may be nothing on them. I will ask my cousin what he found. That is probably enough for you to absorb right now, and I don't want to branch off to the other siblings, but if I find any more tidbits of information on Edward and Adolphina, I will pass them along. At least we have those two in common. Take care. Marge Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 1. [PAHUNTIN] 4th of July, 1899
    2. Judy Banja
    3. The glorious old fourth was one long to be remembered in the history of Alexandria. The day was a perfect one, being very warm during the forenoon, but the hot sun hid his face during the afternoon and it became much cooler. The main street was handsomely decorated with flags, bunting, etc. At 10 o'clock the industrial parade took place. After dinner the races took place. The 100-yard dash was won by A. Brenneman, first; second prize, Amos Yocum. The sack race was won by Bud Isenberg; second prize, Howard McMahan. William Wilson took first prize by climbing the greased pole. The wheelbarrow race was won by Cloyd Stoufer; second prize, George Wharton. The tub race was won by M. E. Graffius. There were five bicycle races as follows: One-half mile race won by Roy Rung, of Huntingdon. In the mile race Roy Rung came first, Cowher second and Sam Flag third. The two mile race was won by Cowher, Rung second and Thomas McQuig third. In the five mile race Sam Flag, of Williamsburg was the winner. The novice race resulted as follows: Thomas McQuig, first, Tompson second, A. Hileman third. The next item of interest was the horse races: The three minute race was won by Ed. Helyer, time 2:58. The 2:40 race was easily won by H. Knode, time 2:32. In the rifle shot contest Ed. Helyer was first winner, George Stinger second, George Hutchison third. The trap shooting resulted in a decisive victory for Mr. Kline, of Huntingdon. The last feature of the day was the ball game between Alexandria and the strong team of Huntingdon. With Frank Grove in the box the home team easily defeated the visitors by a score of 12 to 15. Had Grove been well supported Huntingdon possibly would have only had four runs. Mr. Grove is a pitcher on one of the teams of Pennsylvania University. Tyrone and other teams will now have a chance to win back their defeats of two years ago. The Monarchs of Altoona will also receive a challenge from our strong team. The leading event in the evening was the large bicycle parade by both sexes. During the morning parade the twenty-five young ladies on their wheels, which were tastefully decorated, added much to the procession. The music was provided by the Petersburg and Alexandria bands, together with the orchestra which was stationed at the hotel. The band also held a festival in the afternoon and evening. Yes, I will send you what I have. My second cousin did an in-depth report for all of us on the Fritchey family. The only Frank I have listed was born March 29, 1858, and I suspect that he would be your great-grandfather. He was the son of Edward Christopher Fritchey (b. August 25, 1834; d. September 18, 1927) and Adolphina Carolina Richter (b. August 9, 1836; d. August 26, 1921), your gggrandparents. Does that coincide with any information you have or need? I hope so. There were 11 children, and my line is through Frank's brother, Edward Andrew Fritchey. If I'm on the right track, please let me know and I can give you his siblings' info. I still have an uncle who currently is living in the Huntingdon area. Some other surnames from Huntingdon are Sharrer, Gates and Herman. I've been using a computer for 15 years, but just began emailing. Anyway I thought I emailed Kim but Carey replied so I'll answer Carey. You're right about Mabel's obit. not mentioning an out of wedlock daughter, but here is Josephine Manges' obituary from the Baltimore Sun Newspaper....Josephine Burkett Manges, 79 died Wednesday morning, Feb. 6, 1991, at Villa St. Michael's Nursing Home, Baltimore, MD. She was born June 26, 1911 in Altoona, daughter of the late Mabel O. Medling, and was the adopted daughter of the late Charles and Elsie Burkett of Bedford. She was a graduate of Bedford High School, worked at a department store and was a homemaker. She married Josiah W. Manges of Bedford on April 4, 1931 in Bedford. Her husband died July 18, 1984. She is survived by two daughters: Mrs. Donna Wick of Westminster, Calif. and Mrs. Elsie Walker of Baltimore; a son, Joel Manges of Pasadena, MD; and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Fu! neral services were held Feb 7 in Brooklyn Park, MD., with burial at Cedar Hill Cemetery, Baltimore [the end of obit.] Josephine's real father was not mentioned because at that time someone had said it was Joseph Rohrer in Ohio who had a Josephine born June 13, 1911 [compare the Brown Tp., Carroll Co, Ohio 1920 census entry with the Charlie and Elsie Burket entry in Bedford, Bedford Co.,PA with their 'daughter' Josephine (by the way, my wife was named after this Elsie Burket)]. If you're wondering about Mabel in 1920 you'll have to look in Johnstown City, Cambria Co.,PA under Leroy Elsworth, which marriage had about 6-7 years left before Mabel divorced and married Fred Sauers and moved to Ohio. I have a lot more information. Oh, and Josephine and her husband told me (on tape) her father was Carl Roar, and 'Roar' is on her marriage license, which I have a copy. Author: CareyChilcote Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.pennsylvania.counties.huntingdon/3606.1.1.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi Kim, long time no type. Ron, I hope you don't mind my butting in here since these folk you're discussing are my cousins too. I'm pretty sure you've been researching much longer than I have but I have learned a few things that you might not be taking into consideration. Obituaries are good sources of information but they are not always free of error. They are often based on second- or third-hand information to begin with and that information then goes through several, shall we say, less than totally concerned individuals before it appears in ink on a newspaper page. Even when no errors of commission occur it doesn't mean an obituary is all-inclusive. Your mileage may vary but I can't remember ever seeing an obituary which included negative aspects of the deceased's life. In 1911, I imagine there was much more stigma involved with giving birth to an illegitimate child than there is today, even if the child was given away to be raised by others. Even if a woman in this situation had later reconciled with her daughter it's not a given that the daughter would be acknowledged in the mother's obituary all those long years after. An obituary, I remind you, is based on what in court might be deemed hearsay. I respectfully submit that just because something wasn't included in an obituary doesn't mean it didn't happen. What about this Josephine's obituary? I don't know if it's correct or not but information I received from Barbara Jean (Peace) Crain in 1999 indicated that Josephine died 6 Feb 1991 in Baltimore, Maryland. I just now looked her up in the Social Security Death Index and found the following: SSDI: Josephine M. Manges SSN: 208-07-1214 Last Residence: 21234 Baltimore, Baltimore, Maryland Born: 25 Jun 1911 Last Benefit: 21234 Baltimore, Baltimore, Maryland Died: Feb 1991 SSN Issued: Pennsylvania (Before 1951 ) Ron, if you have Josephine's obituary then how about sharing it. If you haven't got it, perhaps you could use the SSDI data to acquire it or, better yet, with her SSN you could request a copy of her original application for a social security number. Kim, I think it's possible there's room for more research here. Thanks for hearing me out. Carey L. Chilcote Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 1. [PAHUNTIN] obituaries
    2. Obituaries are helpful but not always correct and not always death certificates are correct. In our family, my grandfather's mother was a twin. Aunt Lizzie stayed in the area of her birth. Her twin brother moved to Washington State. Aunt Lizzie lived to be nearly 100 years old with a good mind. She died in 1948 and often spoke of her parents and siblings. Her death certificate and obituary are correct. The twin, Uncle Daniel, died in Washington state and died childless. A sister-in-law gave the information for the death certificate and she named the wrong person as the mother. This Washington state death certificate will probably always be wrong. However, there are some problems that should be corrected (some of which I only recently corrected in my research). First of all Mabel definately gave birth to a child Josephine (I believe in her half-brother's house in Altoona). The father was Carl Roarabaugh of Broad Top Tp, Bedford Co.--not far from Clay Tp that the Medlings were living. After the child was born the couple split (never married) and Mabel moved to Johnstown (rather than home near Carl & her siblings). She left the baby with her half-brother (probably Joseph)and married Josiah Leroy Ellsworth in 1913 (marriage ended abt 1926)and then Mabel married Fred Sauers. Back to Josephine: In 1911 Elsie and Charlie Burket had been married several years and could not have children, so when they were visiting the Sipes a couple doors from Joseph's house they went over--ended up taking Josephine--and then moved to Bedford where they raised her as their own [Mabel made occasiona! l visits as "Aunt Mabel]. When Josephine became pregnant (single & age 19)she became very upset and the Burkets told her to relax--it also happened to her REAL mother and confessed the past. Mabel visited Josephine's family many times over the years (my wife, Mabel's granddaughter, met Mabel several times before Mabel moved to Ohio and I have pictures of Mabel and Fred). Plus there is a lot more I could add, but I don't know how much this email can hold. I read somewhere that it will not take an attachment, so if you want to send me your email address I'll send you more of the details. Again, thank you for replying so quickly.
