    1. [PAHUNTIN] ANCESTORS OF ROBERT STEWART , HUSBAND OF CATHERINE SPENCER
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: Timesch Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.pennsylvania.counties.huntingdon/5726/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I finaly got my hands of copies of the pages of the "STEWART CLAN MAGAZINE" which contain information on Robert Stewart, husband of Catherine Spencer. This data lists Robert Stewart as being married to Catherine Spencer about 1770. It also lists his occupation as "weaver". What is very interesting is that it cites a publication which may hold the key to Robert's ancestry. From Tome F, page 210, of the Stewart Clan Magazine --- The author of DESCENDANTS OF JOEL BAILEY said "There is evidence that Robert and Martha also had a son Robert." This sugests that Robert, weaver, may have been a son of Robert and Martha (Richardson) Stewart and a grandson of Alexander and Mary (Bailey) Stewart. Robert Stewart, husband of Martha (or Mary) Richardson is listed on many pages of the Stewart Clan Magazine, unfortunately I do not have copies of these pages. Alexander Stewart, husband of Mary Bailey is also listed on many pages and I have only one of those pages. This page has Alexander coming to Chester, Pennsylvania in 1697 as an indentured servent and lists his birth as "about 1686, probably in Scotland." I also have the write ups, from the Stewart Clan Magazine on some of Robert and Catherine's children. I have full paragraph write ups on William Stewart/Mary Kerr and on Samuel Stewart/Ann Wilson. There are also basicly one line entries for the following children of Robert and Catherine; John, James, Robert and Andrew. Please contact me at Dlabtle@aol.com if you would like the entry for any of the above named Stewarts. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 1. [PAHUNTIN] Children of Robert Stewart and Catherine Spencer
    2. Below are transcriptions of what is contained in the "Stewart Clan Magazine" about the children of Robert and Catherine (Spencer) Stewart. The letter designation is the Tome of the magazine in which the write-up appears and of course the number is the page within that tome. WILLIAM STEWART C261 William Stewart, born about 1771, married Mary -----. He died after Feb. 12, 1799, in West township, when the orphan's court awarded a writ to divide or appraise his father's estate, and before Mar. 7, 1799. On Mar. 8, 1799, administration on his estate was granted to Samuel Stewart, the widow Mary having renounced her right the day before. The witnesses to Mary's renunciation were James and Ann Stewart. William had a posthumous daughter, and in May 1801, William Johnston, esq., was appointed the child's guardian; he refused to act, and on Dec. 1, 1801, the court appointed Robert Spencer. On Sep. 15, 1802, Spencer as guardian waived his ward's right to buy her grandfather's land. Child; Abigail 1799 SAMUEL STEWART C261 Samuel Stewart, born 1773, appears to have bought his father's 120 acre farm in Barree township in 1802. SAMUEL STEWART F210 Samuel Stewart, born in 1773 in Chester county, was a boy when his parents moved to Huntingdon county and settled on Globe run some two miles above Wisontown, in West township. There he married Oct. 2, 1798, Ann Wilson. He and some of his brothers moved to Licking county, Ohio, about 1805 or 1810. Benjamin Elliott, one of the justices of the Huntingdon county court, went to Ohio in the 1800s and acquired considerable land on the north branch of Licking river, in the Military tract, on which he laid out a town called Fairfield in 1806, then in Fairfield county but, after 1808, in Licking county. At a drawing of lots, which was held in the town of Newark, Samuel Stewart drew lot 53 in Fairfield. Elliot gave him this lot free, in a deed dated Nov. 15, 1813, "in consideration of the regard he has for his name and his wife Susan's name that the said Samuel will call the child that his wife Ann is now pregnant with, if a male Benjamin Elliott, if a female Susan Elliott." On the same day Judge Elliott gave Robert Stewart lot 61 in Fairfield on condition that Robert would build a log house 18X20 feet on it with in 18 months. On Nov. 19, 1813, Elliott deeded a lot to John Stewart, young son of Samuel, "in consideration of the regard and respect of my father's name, John Elliott." Nov. 5, 1813, Elliott donated 170 perches of land in section 4, township 3, range 12, for a school in Newton township, Licking county, the trustees being Samuel Stewart, John Spencer and William Gray. Benjamin Elliott continued to reside in Huntingdon county, Pa., where, "advanced in years and unable to attend to his business as formerly, "he signed a power-of-attorney on Nov. 17, 1813, appointing Samuel Stewart of Licking county, Ohio, "now present on my farm," his agent, authorizing Stewart to hire a millwright and build a saw-mill and also engage a man to build a gristmill on a little stream there in partnership with William Spencer, and also to take care of the sugar trees and other timber on all unleased lands in the county, etc.. Samuel Stewart sold his several tracts of land in 1817, 1818 and 1819, after which he seems to have removed from the county. JOHN STEWART C261 John Stewart, born 1778, married Oct. 20, 1801, Margaret Wilson. JAMES STEWART C261 James Stewart, born in 1783, chose John Spencer as his guardian May 9, 1799, when he was over 14 years of age. He married Oct. 1, 1805, Janet Gray. ROBERT STEWART C262 Robert Stewart, born in 1785, was placed under the guardianship of John Spencer Feb. 12, 1799. ALEXANDER STEWART C262 Alexander Stewart, born in 1787, was placed under the guardianship of John Spencer Feb. 12, 1799. ANDREW STEWART C262 Andrew Stewart, born 1791, was placed under the guardianship of John Spencer Feb. 12, 1799, when 7 years of age. He died May --, 1847, leaving ten children. **************************************See AOL's top rated recipes (http://food.aol.com/top-rated-recipes?NCID=aoltop00030000000004)

    1. [PAHUNTIN] Possible ancestors of Robert Stewart husband of Catherine Spencer
    2. I have finally gotten my hands of copies of selected pages of the "Stewart Clan Magazine". I am transcribing what the "Stewart Clan Magazine" wrote about Robert and his ancestors. I will also include a few notes from other sources. I have no other data on Robert's ancestors other than what is listed here and I do not have ready access to the "Stewart Clan Magazine". I wish that I could confirm the following information but unfortunately, I can not. 1. ROBERT STEWART - INFORMATION FROM TOME F, PAGE 210, OF THE STEWART CLAN MAGAZINE Robert Stewart married Catherine Spencer. He was a weaver, living in Kennett township, Chester county, Pennsylvania, when he bought Mar. 6, 1777, of David Nielson, merchant, of Wilmington, Delaware, a tract of land in Kennett. The author of DESCENDANTS OF JOEL BAILEY said "There is evidence that Robert and Martha also had a son Robert." This suggests that Robert, weaver, may have been a son of Robert and Martha (Richardson) Stewart and a grandson of Alexander and Mary (Bailey) Stewart, =C71. Robert and Catherine "migrated from Kennett Square, Chester county, to Huntingdon county about the time of the Revolution, "said the HISTORY OF INDIANA COUNTY, PA., 1880, page 475. Data from the records of Huntingdon county are given on page 261, tome C, Stewart Clan Magazine. Robert died in 1795, and Catherine died soon after. Their children, born between the years 1771 and 1791, were: William, Samuel, Mary, John, Elizabeth, James, Robert, Alexander and Andrew. INFORMATION FROM TOME C, PAGE 261 Robert Stewart married about 1770 Catherine ------------. He came from Chester county before 1795 and settled in Barree township, Huntingdon county. He contracted to buy of Andrew Donaldson a tract of 120 acres on Shaver's creek in Barree township, joining lands of Daniel McFall and William Nelson and land belonging to John Kerr near the foot of Tussey's mountain. Donaldson obtained the land from the patentee, Henry Drenker, esq., of Philadelphia, and it was originally surveyed in the name of Samuel Ritchie. Robert lived on Globe run about two miles above the point where it enters Shaver's creek at Wilsontown (Cottage), five miles from Petersberg, in the part of Barree which was set off about 1798 as West township. He died in 1791. Administration on his estate was granted May 27, 1791, to Catherine and William Stewart. Catherine died soon after. Sep. --, 1798. William petitioned the orphans' court, stating that Robert Stewart, late of Barree township, died intestate in 1795, leaving a widow, since deceased, and nine children (as given below), and asked to have his father's land valued or divided. William, who was the eldest son, died in 1799, and Samuel, the second son, petitioned the court May 9, 1700, for the right to buy the land, which the court granted. Children of Robert and Catherine: William 1771; m. Mary ---; died 1799 Samuel 1773; m. Oct. 2, 1798, Ann Wilson Mary 1775; m. David Ralston; died before 1798 John 1778; m. Oct. 20, 1801 Margaret Wilson Elizabeth 1780 m. William Gray James 1783; m. Oct. 1, 1805 Janet Gray Robert 1785 Alexander 1787 Andrew 1792 2. ROBERT STEWART - INFORMATION FROM FAMILY OF WALTER STUART (STEWART) _www.quakersurnames.net/sturat.hrml_ (http://www.quakersurnames.net/sturat.hrml) Robert Stewart (b. 25 Nov. 1710; d. 1783) m. Mary (Martha) Richardson (b. 1717; d. 1791),dt. Isaac Richardson and Catherine Gandy, 1732. They had: Mary, Elizabeth, John, Alexander, Jehu, Katherine, Robert, Gravenor, Amos, Henry, Isaac, Rachel and Hannah. NOTE---Robert Stewart/Mary (Martha) Richardson are referenced numerous times in the "Stewart Clan Magazine" but I do not, as yet, have copies of those pages. 3. ALEXANDER STEWART - INFORMATION FROM THE "STEWART CLAN MAGAZINE", TOME G, PAGE 197 Alexander Stewart was born about 1686, probably in Scotland. (See footnote 1) "He was one of 46 servants who were brought before the court held at Chester, Pennsylvania, Oct. 5, 1697," said STUART AND ALLIED FAMILIES, 1938, by Elbridge Amos Stuart, "for approval of their indentures, all of which dated from Sep. 14, 1697, probably the date of their arrival. "the sale of negro slaves having been banned in Quaker territory, ship masters found a lucrative business in hiring agents on the other side of the water to round up boys and girls who had no one to look after them, transport them to the colonies and literally sell them for the period of their minority to pay for their transportation. Alexander had a brother (See footnote1) John, but beyond that, nothing has been revealed respecting his birthplace or the name of his father. The Chester county court bound Alexander to Francis Chadsey to serve seven years, or eight years if Chadsey should teach the boy to read and write. Some years later Chadsey sold young Stewart's remaining bondage to Henry Nagel (Nayle), with the boy's consent, and the court on June 10, 1701, confirmed the transaction, the agreement being that the youth would work for Nayle fifteen months beyond his original time if his master would teach him the shoemaker's trade. Nayle probably lived near the town of Chester. Alexander married Mary Bailey, who was born Nov. 10, 1688, in Chester count, daughter of Joel and Ann (Short) Bailey, Quakers. Joel Bailey was baptized Jan.29, 1658, in Bromham parish, Wiltshire, England, son of Daniel and Mary. Mary's marriage to Alexander Stewart was disapproved and ignored by the Quaker meeting, for he was not a member of the Society of Friends. After his death Jan. 5, 1714-5, she wrote a letter, which was accepted at the Newark (later Kennett) monthly meeting Nov. 5, 1715, in which she "owned that she is sorry that she did contrary to good order." She then married Nov. 12, 1715, George Harlan, a Quaker, and by him had seven children. Alexander Stewart, yeoman, of Chester county bought Oct. 5, 1713, of the Penns' agents for 28 pounds, 350 acres of land on the south side of Brandywine creek. He undoubtedly resided on this land, which was in Kennett township. He made his will Dec. 10, 1714, with Vincent Caldwell, Gayen Miller and William Webb as witnesses, and it was probated June 20, 1715. An inventory of his chattels, totaling 343 pounds, was taken Jan 13, 1714-5, by Michael Harland and Silas Pryor. The executors named were "my father-in-law Joel Bayley and Henry Nayle." He signed Alexander Stewart. Besides various legacies to ... (continued on the next page, a page which I do not have a copy of. Alexander is also referenced on more pages of the magazine ,of which I do not have copies.) INFORMATION FROM FAMILY OF WALTER STUART (STEWART) _www.quakersurnames.net/stuart.html_ (http://www.quakersurnames.net/stuart.html) Alexander Stuart (b. 1680, Edinburg, Scotland, d. 5 Nov. 1714), m. Mary Bailey (b. 19 Sep., 1688, d. Sep., 1740, dt Joe Bailey and Ann Short), 1704; they had Jane, Robert, Ann and Mary. INFORMATION FROM THE BAILEY FAMILY _www.steveleslie.net/bailey.html_ (http://www.steveleslie.net/bailey.html) Mary Bailey born November 10, 1688 in Bronham, Whitshire, England, died October 20, 1741 in Chester Co., Pennsylvania. Married to Alexander Stewart; born 1685 in Edinburgh, Scotland. 2nd marriage to George Harlan; born October 4, 1690. 4. Janette Forsythe; they had: Alexander, Samuel, Julia Ann, John and Robert. 5. WALTER STUART/STEWART Robert Stewart and Catherine Spencer have been a major "brick wall" of mine for years. I hope the wall is starting to crumble and that some of you on this list may be able to help tear it down. **************************************See AOL's top rated recipes (http://food.aol.com/top-rated-recipes?NCID=aoltop00030000000004)

    1. [PAHUNTIN] Hardy
    2. Carroll
    3. I am looking for anyone who has information on the Hardy family. I am interested in Paul Hardy who served in WW II. He was on a veterans memorial in Everett, that memorial had long been destroyed but they are putting up a new memorial and since his name was on the old Memorial his name will go on the new memorial. We are trying to locate family for information. Many believe he is Paul Hardy JR. They don't want to put this down in error. I checked the 1930 census and can not find Paul Hardy in Huntingdon Co, yet some felt that is where he came from. I have found out he worked on the Pennsylvania Turnpike when it was being built which is when he lived in Everett. He was married a short time to Annie Bulger. I am not sure if he married a second time. Is there a way I can check on WW II military records? Any help would be appreciated. Carolyn

    1. [PAHUNTIN] ROCKWELL - ROCKHOLD, PA and OH
    2. ROCKWELL - ROCKHOLD I am trying to establish the relationship of Nathaniel as father of (a) John W. ROCKHOLD (birthplace unk & John W.s mother’s name) and (b) Joseph ROCKHOLD birthdate and place, apparently born in Huntingdon Co. Also hoping to establish birthplace and date for John W. Also trying to establish other children in Nathaniel’s family. Willing to exchange information with other researchers. My direct line goes through John W to Nathaniel. Any suggestions from anyone about sources to look up, info on how to find lists of ME churches of the time, and possible sources to fill in the blanks in the below information would be very welcome. Some of the little we know: First tax of list of 1788 of Huntingdon Co. Pennsylvania, p 124, lists Nathaniel ROCKWELLl, as head of household, with 3 males under 15, and three females including heads of families. Nathaniel ROCKHOLD (same person) is buried in Ohio, died 1800 or 1806. He died on his son Joseph’s farm there. The family seems to have used Rockwell, and then Rockhold as their last name, from time to time. There is a belief that this family is descended from Deacon William ROCKWELL who came to the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1620 on the ship “Mary and John”. In Collections of the Historical Society of PA, by the Historical Society of PA, published in 1853, it states Israel Cryder remembering Nathaniel ROCKWELL as one of the first settlers of Canoe Valley. Today, this location would be about 5 miles east of Altoona PA. Joseph ROCKHOLD is listed in the 1790 Census record, Shirley Twp, Huntingdon PA. John ROCKHOLD listed in 1790 Census record for Baltimore Co. MD. (May or may not be this family). The family removed from Pennsylvania about 1797 to Ohio. The family were often self described as members of ME churches. Family helped start a college for women in OH in early 1800s. Nathaniel married Ann Mackell (second wife) in Ohio, Highland County, 1811, per probate court records. Hopewell, Huntingdon, PA mentions Nathaniel, in "Africa's History of Huntingdon Co"., page 291. He is also mentioned Pennsylvania Archives, Third Series, Vol. XXII, page 357.

I have a Samuel Waldsmtih, dates unknown, as a brother to my gr-gr-great grandfather, David W(esley) Waldsmith. David was born 05 NOV 1811 and died 26 MAR 1889, and is buried in Donation, Huntingdon County, PA. He had 10 siblings (last name spelled both Waldsmith and Waldschmidt): Jacob, Elizabeth, Judith, Mary Ann, James, John, Martha, William, George and Samuel. Unfortunately I have no dates for any of these, but judging from David'd birth year, there is a very good chance that these Samuels are one and the same. These were the children of Johannes Waldschmidt, b. 13 Jan 1788, and Martha White. I have the line for Johannes all the way back to his gr-great grandfather, Simon Waldschmidt b. about 1669 in Germany. However, much of this info was gathered from various websites, so I have not been able to verify it all, but it makes for a good start. Contact me at 78steelhead@comcast.net.
