    3. Here in Huntingdon at 2nd & Church Sts. There is a single cross marking the presence of graves on the hill; all grave markers were removed perhaps in the 1940s. Most Holy Trinity parish owns and maintains the ground.

The whole valley going northeast out of Petersburg as far as the Pine Swamp area across Tussey Mountain from Pine Grove Mills is Shavers Creek Valley. Steve Kemp

    3. Here are obits for 2/4/03: William Wilson SNYDER, 83, of R.R. 1, Box 39, Hesston, died at 3:40 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 2, 2003, at Huntingdon Manor, Warm Springs Avenue, Huntingdon. He had been in failing health for the past two years. Born in Aitch, Hopewell Township, Sept. 3, 1919, he was a son of the late Allen S. and Nora A. (Conn) Snyder. He was united in marriage to the former Phyllis V. Johnson April 10, 1942, at the home of the groom in Aitch. The groom’s father officiated at the wedding. Mrs. Snyder survives at their home. He is survived by three daughters and one son; Mrs. David (Judith Ann Snyder) Burke, Marshall Harbor, The Bahamas; Gibson Lee Snyder, Hesston, R.R. 1; Mrs. David (Connie Snyder) Fisher, Lancaster; and Mrs. Lee (Barbara Snyder) Wakefield, Hesston, R.R. 1. There are 10 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, one step granddaughter and one step great-granddaughter. He was preceded in death by one half sister, Mrs. Tom (Edna Snyder) Ruane, and two brothers, Arthur Snyder and Allen Snyder Jr. Mr. Snyder was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ, McConnellstown, where he formerly served as a deacon. He was a life member of the Standing Stone Post No 1754, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Huntingdon, and the Mapleton Post No. 322, American Legion, Mapleton. He was also a member of the Central County Honey Beekeepers Association. He attended the Hopewell Township public schools. During World War II he served with the U.S. Army, Co. H., 324th Inf. Reg. 44th Div., in the European Theatre of Operations, attaining the rank of technical sergeant. He saw action in Northern France, The Rhineland and Central Europe. He had resided at his Walker Township home for over 60 years. Employed by The Daily News as a motor delivery carrier, he was also a groundskeeper at the Huntingdon Country Club. Prior to and following his military service, he was employed by Harbison Walker Refractory, Mount Union. He later served as a school bus owner/operator in the Huntingdon Area School District for 35 years. Along with his brother, he co-owned Snyder’s Garage of Smithfield Township, that later became Snyder’s Fruit Market He enjoyed gardening, tending to his orchard of over 100 fruit trees and his honey bees, hunting, fishing and camping. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 5, at the John B. Brown Funeral Home, 417 Washington St., Huntingdon, with the Rev. Dr. Keith A. Kensinger officiating. Interment will be made in Huntingdon Memorial Gardens, Walker Township, Huntingdon, R.R. 1, where full military honors will be accorded at the graveside committal service. Esther L. YOCUM, 72, of R.R. 1, Box 175, Blairs Mills, died at 2:05 p.m. Saturday, Feb 1, 2003, at Chambersburg Hospital, Chambersburg. Born May 16, 1930, in Huntingdon County. she was a daughter of the late W. Henry and Annie M. (Yocum) Goshorn. She was united in marriage to Warren M. Yocum March 2, 1957. Mr. Yocum survives at their home. Two sons and one daughter survive; Steven W. Yocum, Orbisonia; and Drew A. Yocum and Mrs. Buddie (Trudy J.) Hockenberry, both of Blairs Mills. Born Sept. 20, 1922, in Huntingdon, she was a daughter of the late John and Mary Naomi (Miller) Sanks. She married Robert Carlson March 3, 1945, in Sidney. Mr. Carlson preceded her in death Sept. 21, 1993. She is survived by one son and one daughter; Craig Carlson, Liverpool, N.Y., and Mrs. Michael (Cynda) Hurley, Columbia, S.C. There are four grandchildren. One sister, Evelyn Sanks of Tampa. Fla., survives. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two brothers; Cloyd Sanks and Ellsworth Sanks, and six sisters; Beatrice Rhodes, Laura Marble, Catherine Sanks, Josephine Owens, Betty Vitch and Jane Cook. Mrs. Carlson was a longtime member of the United Methodist Church, Sidney. She operated Liz’s Fabrics and the Pennysaver, both in Sidney. for several years. Samuel J. DiSALVO, 81, of Falls Township, died Sunday, Feb. 2, 2003, at Chandler Hall, Newtown. Born Dec. 18, 1921, in Huntingdon, he was a son of the late Frank and Josephine DiSalvo. He is survived by one brother, Andrew DiSalvo of Mount Union, and one sister, Sandy Tecco of Middletown. Many nieces and nephews also survive. He was preceded in death by one brother, Tony DiSalvo, and one sister, Mary Kern. Mr DiSalvo was a member of St. Joseph the Worker parish and was a member of the Knights of Columbus, St. Joseph the Worker Council No. 4215. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. (Hesley) Metz, She was united in marriage to Paul Sitch March 18, 1949. Mr. Sitch survives at their home. Two sons survive; Paul C. Sitch, Colonial Heights, Va.; and Kenneth G. Sitch, Belleville. There are five grandchildren. She is also survived by one sister, Mrs. Mark (Betty) Leamer of Huntingdon. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Janet J. Sitch, and two brothers, John C. Born July 21, 1928, in Dublin Township, Huntingdon County, she was a daughter of the late Luther and Beulah (Nead) Locke. She was married to Galen Kling Nov. 9, 1944, in Hagerstown, Md. Mr. Kling survives at their home. She is survived by three daughters; Linda Kling, Shade Gap; and Mrs. David (Glenda) Hamilton and Mrs. Bill (Audrey) Hall, both of Burnt Cabins. There are four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, four step-great-grandchildren and two step-great-great-grandchildren. Three sisters and one brother survive; Dorothy Mellott, Mercersburg; Mildred Linn and Janet Locke, both of Woodland Retirement Center, Orbisonia; and Stanley Locke, Burnt Cabins. She was preceded in death by one son, Donald Eugene Kling; three brothers, Robert Locke, Wallace Locke and Richard "Dick" Locke; and two sisters. Mary (Locke) Brown and Hazel (Locke) Brown. Mrs. Kling was a member of the Fair Ridge Assembly of God Church. Shade Gap, for over 50 years where she served as superintendent of the pre-school children’s Sunday School department and taught Sunday School classes for over 40 years. In 1969, she founded the annual Boys and Girls Missionary Parade at the church. She was also a member of the Women’s Ministries at Fair Ridge. A member of the Huntingdon County Farm Women and the Huntingdon County Farm Women Group II, she served as president of both groups for a number of years. She was a member of the Huntingdon County Gideons Ladies Auxiliary and the Shade Gap Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary For over 20 years, she served on the Dublin Township Election Board. She was a homemaker. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 5. at the Fair Ridge Assembly of God Church, Shade Gap, R.R., with the Revs. Wilson Boyd and Belvy White officiating. Interment will be made in Fair Ridge Cemetery. Emma Naomi SUMMERS, 75, of South Madden Road, Hustontown, died Saturday morning, Feb. 1, 2003, at her home in Taylor Township, Fulton County. Born May 13, 1927, in Todd Township, Huntingdon County, she was a daughter of the late James Alex and Esther (Crownover) Heffner. She was married to Theodore W. Summers Feb. 16, 1944, in Hagerstown, Md. Mr. Summers preceded her in death Nov. 30, 1998. One son and one daughter survive; Theodore J. Summers, Shippensburg; and Beverly A. McDaid, Hustontown. There are four grandsons and six great-grandchildren. One sister, Betty Watkins of Willow hill. also survives. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Pearl, Dec. 3, 1977; one son, Edgar, Oct. 16, 1964; one grandson, Rick McDaid; one great-grandson. Seth Summers; two brothers and two sisters. Mrs. Summers was of the Methodist faith. Along with her husband, she had been self-employed in the logging business for many years. Funeral services will be held at 11 am. Tuesday, Feb. 4. at the MR. Brown Funeral Home, Hustontown, with the Rev. David Ford officiating. Interment will be made in Hustontown Cemetery. John Richard HAWN, 81, of R.R. 2, Box 284, Huntingdon, died at 12:40 am. Sunday, Feb. 2, 2003, at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital, Huntingdon, following a brief illness. Born Jan. 27, 1922, in Huntingdon County, he was a son of the late John David and Helen (Frew) Hawn. He was united in marriage to the former Henrietta Peoples March 9, 1951, in Belleville, by the Rev. C. O. Anderson. Mrs. Hawn survives at their Miller Township residence. Two daughters survive; Sharon D. Hawn and Dian E. Lewis, both of Miller Township, Huntingdon County. There are two grandchildren. He is also survived by two sisters; Jean Peoples of Huntingdon, and Erchall Tetwiler of Port Royal. One sister Marietta Collins, preceded him in death. Mr. Hawn was a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, where he was a member of the Manor Hill Charge United Methodist Men and was also active on various church committees. A graduate of Huntingdon High School, he was a member of the Class of 1941. He served with the U.S. Army, during World War II, from 1942-1945. In 1986, he retired from the receiving department of the J.C. Blair Company (presently Mead Westvaco) following 40 years service. He enjoyed the outdoors, including hunting and vegetable gardening. At one time he enjoyed bowling. He was a resident of his Miller township home for 52 years. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 4, at the John B. Brown Funeral Home, 417 Washington St., Huntingdon. with the Rev. Joleen A. Willis officiating. Interment will be made in Donation Cemetery, Oneida Township, Huntingdon, R.R. 2. Paul L. MANSPEAKER, 77, of Stein Road, Everett, died Friday, Jan. 31, 2003, at UPMC Bedford Memorial Hospital. Born Aug. 17, 1925, in Woodbury, he was a son of the late Lewis Carl and Mabel (Fickes) Manspeaker. He was united in marriage to the former Rilla L. Kelly June 25, 1949, in Huntingdon. Mrs. Manspeaker survives. Two sons survive; Brian K. Manspeaker, Elkton, Md.; and Tod W. Manspeaker, Imlertown. There are two grandchildren, one stepgranddaughter and one step-great-granddaughter He is also survived by one sister, Theola Adams of Everett. Two brothers preceded him in death; Wayne Manspeaker and Joseph Manspeaker. Mr. Manspeaker was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church, Everett, where he served on the church council and taught Sunday School. He was a member of the Everett F&AM Lodge No. 524, receiving his 50-year pin in 2000, and a member of the AAONMS Jaffa Temple, Altoona. He was a past member of the Everett Elementary PTA, which he served as president. He also served as a past president of the Pennsylvania State PTA. He was a member and past president of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. He was a 1943 graduate of Everett High School. For 40 years, he worked for the United States Postal Service, retiring in 1985. Initially, he worked as a clerk and assistant postmaster in Everett and was then financial examiner and floor supervisor in Johnstown. He was appointed as acting postmaster in State College, and in 1972, accepted the position of postmaster in Hollidaysburg. In 1977, he became postmaster of the Bedford office, where he served until his retirement Dec. 8, 1985. In his youth, he was a dressage horse trainer. He enjoyed raising quarter horses on his West Providence Township farm, where he was a specialized blacksmith with his own shop, having shod race horses at Bedford Springs, and a championship bull at Falkland Farms. He was a judge for the American Quarter Horse Association. An avid pool player, he also enjoyed playing the 5-string banjo. Funeral services will be held at 11 am. Wednesday. David Lee CLINGERMAN, 64, of 174 King St., Petersburg, died at 10:15 a.m. Friday, Jan. 31, 2003, at The Oaks at Westminster Woods, Huntingdon. He had been in failing health for several months. Born June 20, 1938, in Canfield, Ohio, he was a son of the late Stanley Grant and Hattie Irene (Schenck) Clingerman. He is survived by three sons and two daughters; Jeffrey Clingerman of Michigan; Brent Clingerman and Kent Clingerman, both of Texas; and Hotly Esterline and Kimberly Proctor, both of Michigan. Two brothers and two sisters survive; Quentin Clingerman, Monrovia, Ohio; Stanley Clingerman, Poland, Ohio; Doris Irons, Haltom City. Texas; and Barbara Tschantz, Louisville, Ohio. There are five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. A longtime close friend and associate, Cecil Ross of Petersburg, with whom he operated a ministry, survives. He was preceded in death by two brothers; Richard and Kermit Clingerman. Mr. Clingerman was a member of Spirit and Truth Worship Center, Huntingdon. A 1956 graduate of North Lima High School, North Lima, Ohio, he attended Eastern Nazarene College, Wollaston, Mass. He earned a bachelor of science and a master’s degree in theology from Life Christian University, Tampa, Fla. His prior employment included working at Boeing Aircraft, Huntingdon, Ala,. and Braniff Airlines, Houston, Texas. He had also been a travel agent for a number of years, with AAA and Seabomes Travel Agency, both of Houston, Texas. In 1973, he founded Bond of Love World International Ministries in Houston, Texas. The ministry is now based in Petersburg. He had most recently served as a missionary to Africa for seven years. Mrs. Brantner was a member of Grace Baptist Church, Tyrone, where she was adored by her church family and was affectionately called "Aunt Helen." His first wife, Pearl Arlene Rex, preceded him in death July 5, 1994. He married the former Frances Morgan Dec. 23, 2000, in Shelton. Mrs. Rex survives at their home. He is survived by one daughter, Kathryne Rex of Lacey, Wash. Two brothers, Robert Lee Rex of Round Rock, Texas. and J. Ray Rex of Florida, survive. He is also survived by a cousin, Gail (Williams) Kline of Saxton. For a number of years during his childhood, Mr. Rex made his home at the home of his aunt and uncle, the late Ike and Mary Williams. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Kathleen Rae Lettle. He was a former member of the Loyal Order of Moose, the American Legion and 40 et 8. A 1945 graduate of Robertsdale High School, he served in the U.S. Navy from 1945-1966 as a chief personnel officer. Following his retirement from the Navy, he worked in civil service until 1968. He pursued an accounting degree and spent five years in farming before he retired. An avid howler and recreational golfer, he also enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening. Funeral services were held Jan. 14, in Washington. "Bud" RUPERT, 87, of Canton, Ohio, died Tuesday morning, Jan. 7, 2003, at Doctors Hospital, Canton, following a brief illness. Born June 12, 1915, in Huntingdon, he was a son of the late Samuel A. and Susan (Craine) Rupert who had resided in Huntingdon. His first wife, Alice, preceded him in death in 1976; his second wife, Margaret C. (Bergner) Rupert, preceded him in death in 2002. He is survived by two step-daughters, Patricia Hendershot, Massilion, Ohio; and Mary Hickman of Arizona. There are three step grandchildren and two step great-grandchildren. One brother and two sisters survive; Dale Rupert, Huntingdon; Janet Voss, Ambridge; and Alta Bailey, Mechanicsburg. Numerous nieces and nephews survive. Mr. Rupert was a member of Whipple Avenue Baptist Church of Ohio. He was a member of LOOM Lodge No. 143, Lewistown. A resident of Canton since 1948, he retired from Dinear Co., Spun Steel Division, in 1980. after 32 years of service. He had formerly been employed by Leopold Chevrolet in Lewistown. Helen Katherine HOUCK, 85, of Huntingdon Manor, Warm Springs Avenue, Huntingdon, died at 11 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2003, at Huntingdon Manor where she had resided since May 2002. Born May 25, 1917, in Huntingdon, she was a daughter of the late John and Mary (McKeen) Conrad. She was united in marriage to Hobert Marshall Houck April 17, 1959, at the Virginia Beach Methodist Church, Virginia Beach, Va., by the Rev. Lee O. Montzfeldt. Mr. Houck survives at Woodland Retirement Center, Orbisonia. She is also survived by one son, Boyd L. Cook of New Castle. There are three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. One brother, Carl Conrad of Alexandria, survives. She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Helen Louise Cook, May 18, 1937; a sister, Anna Mae Hauger; and five brothers, Herbert Conrad, Homer Conrad, George Conrad, William Conrad and Theodore "Ted" Conrad. Mrs. Houck was a member of the Church of the Nazarene, McConnellstown, where she had been an active member and volunteer at church functions. She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law and one daughter and son-in-law; William Duncan Robb and his wife, Nancy, of Huntingdon, and Susan (Robb) Slautterback and her husband, Louis, of Franklin. Three grandchildren survive; Allyson (Robb) Finkle and her husband, Michael, of Mill Creek; William Duncan Robb and his wife, Julie of Columbia, Mo.; and Bethany Ellen Slautterback of Franklin. She is also survived by two great-grandchildren; Andrew Michael Finkle of Mill Creek and Vanessa Marie Robb of Columbia, Mo. Two sisters, Pauline Shunk and Ann Zauzig, both of Huntingdon, survive. She was a member of Soroptomist International Huntingdon Chapter since February 1969, having served as the club president from 1972 until 1974. She attended the Alfarata Elementary School and graduated from Huntingdon High School with the Class of 1941 and actively served on the Class of 1941 reunion committee. >From 1957 until 1986, she was employed by the James C. Morgan Insurance Agency and its successor, the Jack M. Shuck Agency, as a bookkeeper/typist and receptionist. Prior to her retirement, she became a licensed agent and the manager of the personal lines department. She served as the treasurer of the former Provident Building & Loan Company prior to its merger with Huntingdon Savings & Loan. She was united in marriage to George K. Brantner, Aug. 11, 1943, in Huntingdon. Mr. Brantner preceded her in death Sept. 14, 1980. Two sisters survive; Elizabeth Smith, Columbus, Ohio; and Frances Carper, Tyrone. Numerous nieces and nephews survive. She was preceded in death by six brothers. Mrs. Brantner was a member of Grace Baptist Church, Tyrone, where she was adored by her church family and was affectionately called "Aunt Helen." She was a former member of the Church of God, Williamsburg, and the Willing Workers Sunday School Class. She was a former Sunday School teacher there for 30 years. Formerly, she had been employed as a geriatric aide at Garvey Manor Nursing Home, Hollidaysburg. For most of her life she had pet dogs with the most recent being adored poodle, Pearl.
