    3. JEN, Yes, that is very possible and probable. After looking over the document again, I see that it refers to land. It states "His land adjoining a tract known by the name of "Wgaws" land in Shurlock Twp". So, it would make sense that it was a persons name, and what looks like a 'W' is probably 'Mc'. Thank you for clarifying that. Do you happen to know what twp they lived in? It says Shurlock, but another researcher suggested they might have meant Shirley? And, again I would tend to agree, especially since no one has ever heard of a Shurlock Twp. It states it is at the foot of Jack's Mountain. Any help is appreciated. Thanks, Kathy Wells. ----- Original Message ----- From: BCGS07@aol.com To: rebeltrumpet@sbcglobal.net Sent: Sunday, April 06, 2003 3:51 PM Subject: wgaws What about the W being an M McGaw/MCraw is a possible name in the area>Jen

    3. DAVE and/or anyone else that also might have an opinion, I sure do appreciate your information below. I am still a little uncomfortable saying that the "shurlock" is the twp of Shirley, although I had thought of that possibility. Whoever wrote the document might have been spelling phonetically, and whoever pronounced the word might not have spoken clearly. But the word "Shurlock" is written 3 times that way throughout the whole document. I got a magnifying glass to get even a closer look, but that is what is written. But, if the person was not perhaps a good speller that did the writing back in 1785, I wonder then if the "Wgaws" might have been his personal abbreviation for Aughwick??? What do you think.....do you think I am grasping at straws here :~)? It's nice to get other opinions. thanks, Kathy Wells. ----- Original Message ----- From: <DLutz22901@aol.com> To: <rebeltrumpet@sbcglobal.net> Sent: Saturday, April 05, 2003 12:49 PM Subject: Warrant inquiry > Three Springs Creek, Maddensville, Shirleysburg, and Aughwick Creek are all > located in southern Huntingdon County, PA. I need help! I have a land warrant that I just got, that I had ordered. These 'Browns' were in Cumberland County, then it became Bedford Co, then finally Huntingdon Co. I would love a little help, if possible, deciphering some of the places listed. I don't know if anyone is familiar with the area, but below is how the warrant reads and the words in parenthesis are the ones I can not make out. One question is, is the town of Shurlock still around? And, does anyone recognize the places, or can anyone fill in the spaces that I can't read? I'm hoping, someone might be familiar with the way these are supposed to read and the area. Later the area they lived in was called Maddensville, and Shirleysburg, or very near that on the Aughwich Creek, I believe. Thanks, Kathy Wells. [ It is titled: 1785 Oct 31, Danl, Joshua & James Brown. This is what it says: Daniel Brown makes application for four hundred acres of land on the Hills adjoining the mouth of the three spring creek on the north side of said creek in (Shurlock) twp. Joshua Brown makes application for four hundred acres of land laying on (Broad Coles Junn) Spring branch and adjoinning a tract known by the name of (Wgaws) land in Shurlock Twp. 1. Re: [PAHUNTIN] Warriors Mark Cemeteries!
    2. Ken Jones
    3. Bea, Surely someone more familiar with Warriors Mark will give you a better answer, but I know of one cemetery there. PA 350 is one of 2 roads that go through WM. It runs from route 45, near Water Street to 220, near Tyrone. As 350 nears WM, going generally north/south, the cemetery is on its west side, just south of the crossroads that marks the center of WM. I don't know if I ever told this story here, but if I did, please excuse. A few years ago, a Penn State fraternity brother, whom I'd known at that point for 35 years or so, came from NJ to NH for his annual ski trip. Bob was wearing a Penn State jacket as we carried our lunch trays through the lodge at Loon Mountain, in the White Mountains. "Love those Nittany Lions" greeted us as we passed one table. Stopping, we determined that she was several years behind us, lived in CT, but had deep roots in PA. Asked where, she said "In a little town that you never heard of." "Try me." Bob challenged. "Warriors Mark" she stated, smugly. Bob was flabbergasted! "You are not going to believe this, but many of my ancestors come from Warriors Mark!" I just stood there, stunned. Finally, I was able to blurt out "You are NOT going to believe this, but many of MY ancestors came from Warriors Mark!" We exchanged names of ancestors, determined that we weren't related. Later, I found that Bob's GGgrandfather, Anderson, served with my GGgrandfather, Kelly, in the 5th PA Volunteers during the Civil War. Kelly was from Huntingdon, but Weston, Hyskell, Dopp and many others were from WM. Ken in NH > Does anyone or can anyone tell me where and if there are any cemeteries in Warriors Mark ??? > In search of family members. > Would appreciate a listing as well as some sort of directions as to how to get there. > Thanks, Bea > beair@acsworld.com

    3. TO BE SOLD, OR LEASED Sundry tracts of land on Stone-Creek, and in Hopewell Union and Springfield Townships, belonging to Samuel Meredith, Esq. Terms will be made advantageous to purchasers or tenants--William Orbison esq. of Huntingdon is duly authorised to sell or leased said lands, who will give ever necessary information. Indisputable titles will be given. THOMAS MERIDITH Attorney in fact for SAMUEL MERIDITH August 19th, 1806 ----------------------------------------------- In our last, we noticed the robbery and horrid murder of Mr. Peter Eshelman of this county; since which several persons have been apprehended and committed, on suspicion of being perpetrators and accessories in this wicked transaction. On Saturday last John Swan (a German) and his wife (a black woman) with Samuel Grimson, were safely lodged in the prison of this place; and on Thursday last, James Jamison, and James Magowan (who were taken up in Berks county) were likewise brought up to this gaol. From their several examinations, which have taken place before their honors Judge Henry and Spayd, circumstances appear unfavorable to the accused. The above criminals are, we are told, old offenders. Jamison is supposed to be the same person who robbed Benjamin Wallace, Esq., of Hanover, some years since, and burnt the house of a Mr. M'Faddin in this neighborhood. [Oracle of Dauphin.] -------------------------------------------------------------- Reading, 6th September On Saturday last, the 30th August, two men were taken up, on suspicion of not being justly possessed of a mare, &c other property with them--they were taken before a magistrate, and examined separately, when a different account respecting themselves, induced the magistrate to commit them both to the gaol of this place. On Monday last, at a second hearing one of them confessed, that they had some few days since together, robbed a man of 500 dollars, near Middletown in Dauphin county, proceeded then as far as within ten miles of this place, and there purchased said mare, saddle, saddlebags, and other property in their possession. Whether they did more than tie and beat the man from whom they robbed the money (by the confession of the above) is not yet ascertained.--The other of the two, apparently a harder wretch, was not long before convicted for theft in this place and sentenced to hard labor, from which he had but lately got clear. ------------------------------------------ The Huntingdon Troop of Light Dragoons are hereby ordered to meet at their usual parade ground in the Borough of Huntingdon, at the hour of 10 in the morning of the first Monday of October next, fully equipped for exercise. Punctual attendance of all the members is required. By order of the Captain, JAMES CANAN 1st Serjeant 20th Sept, 1806 ----------------------------------------- Agreeably to an order of the Hon. Orphans Court for Huntingdon County, will be exposed to public sale on the premises on the first Monday in November next a GRIST & SAW-MILL plantation or tract of valuable Land, with sundry improvements, containing, in two adjoining surveys, 255 acres. Also, an ISLAND in the river Juniata near the same, containing about 20 acres, in Shirley township, one mile below Drakes Ferry, being the real estate late of William Morris deceased. the terms of sale one fourth in hand and the residue in five annual payments without interest. 1. [PAHUNTIN] Help on Warrant?
    2. Kathy Wells
    3. James Brown makes application for two hundred and ninty acres of land laying on the north side of the (Wgaws) ( ___) flows at the foot of Jacks Mountain in Shurlock Twp. Signed by justices of Bedford Co. Without examining my records, I'd say that there is probably a connection through the Phillips' line and possibly more. There is definitely the Oris Krepps connection. He is the brother of my Great Grandmother, Sallie V. Krepps who married James A. Phillips (both from Mifflin Co for generations). I have a picture of Oris and others in the Krepps family that I have scanned into my computer and can send easily if anyone is interested. Nancy Guilfoy
