I am looking for the Huntingdon Semi Weekly news for Sept and Oct. 1883 for two obits. Turns out BCGS and Juniata College do not have these microfilms. Where else could I find them to look up these two months for obits? Thanks for any help. Hi again Marge... I emailed Annie Whiteman about the Jane Crane obit. She asked when it was posted to the list, as that's how she locates them in her database. I did a list search through Rootsweb for the PABLAIR list, but wasn't able to turn it up. Do you have the date it was posted? I'd like to have a copy, as it jives with her probate material from Bedford Co. Thanks. David

from Steve Kemp. I checked the transcription of county birth records from the mid-19th century which is at the HCHS library. The two years that appear in the record are 1852 and 1853, and for those years only 31 total birth records were placed on record. In the same transcription there are also a similar small number of marriage and death records. The law that had these records being created from 1852, was repealed, and for more than 40 years no birth and death records were made. This information may be of interest to a few people who are looking up vital records from 1852 or 1853 and aren't aware of this short-lived source.
I'm trying to establish parentage for Abram/Abraham R. CRAINE, believed to have been a Major in the Huntingdon Co. militia, and born ca. 1792-1800. He married a much younger woman, Jane P. __(?)--one source names her as Eliza MCKNIGHT--on January 6, 1829, in Antis Twp. Huntingdon Co. (now in Blair). Jane was born in 1805/6 (aged 72 in 1878). They were married by Thomas JOHNSTON, Esq. Between 1840 and 1850, Abram R. CRAINE moved his family to Bedford Twp., Bedford Co., PA, where he died January 20, 1860. Abram and Jane cRAINE were parents to 5 children: Alfred, Eliza J., Mary, Catherine, and David. Source material for the above includes the 1850 census for Bedford Twp., Bedford Co., PA; Bedford Gazette, 1860; and a Mother's Pension Declaration filed by Jane P. CRAINE in 1878 for her son David B. CRAINE, killed Oct. 19, 1864, while serving in the 138th PA Vol. Infantry (includes her marriage date and place of marriage, and confirms the death date for her husband). Some sources suggest either a Richard CRAINE or Evan CRAINE as the father of Abram R. CRAINE. By the 1840s, several CRAINE families (with alternate spellings) were present in the Antis-Warrior's Mark-Franklin Twp. area. My interest in the family stems from the intermarriage of their son Alfred A. CRAINE with Eliza BLODGET of Bedford, PA ca. 1853. I'd be eager to hear from any CRAINE experts out there who can definitively place Abram/Abraham R. CRAINE within an extended family group, or can likewise identify Jane P. __(MCNIGHT?), his wife. Here's hoping... David Fletcher Richmond, VA
from Steve Kemp. My suggestion would be that you contact someone at the Mount Union Area Historical Society who may know who wrote that piece in the 1976 booklet, and what source[s] was used for putting it together. I only know that there were no townships organized in this region until the year 1767, which is not to say that Cumberland County never had a record of land ownership out on its frontier. The published PENNSYLVANIA ARCHIVES might be a place to do a search for such information. It is likely that any land that had an expensive improvement on it was both warranted and patented at an earlier date so that absolute title could be secured. Those papers should be available at the State Archives in Harrisburg, PA; I believe that there are warrants that date as early as 1756 from some parts of the Juniata Valley, such as Aughwick and Standing Stone.
>Query was > >Can anyone tell me where I may find records of marriages performed by George >Whittaker, Esq. in 1855? Would there be a marriage license at the courthouse? > Thank you. > (Steve Kemp adds:) Not aware of any list of marriages performed by any Justices of the Peace having been compiled, nor have I heard of any records of the activities of justices or magistrates from any early period still extant. Marriage licenses were never required by the county until the state mandated the process to start up in 1885. Many marriages were published in the newspapers but there are no compilations except the one that J. Simpson Africa put in his HISTORY, which ends in 1830.
