>Linda, it may help to know that Williamsburg was incorporated as a borough at a fairly early date... if a person was in the town proper technically he was not in Woodbury/ -berry Twp. but borough records are generally located with the township's on census and tax assessment. Also Williamsburg has a historical society, probably a Blair Co. website has the address listed. Woodbury Two. was a very large area in Bedford Co. before the formation of Huntingdon in 1787. it was divided in two at that time and has since been further divided with a number of other townships spinning off >> > >> >from Steve Kemp >> >> >>

Hats off to both the Ken's for giving young Tom a chance to accept responsibility for his actions. You are both teaching him the most valuable thing he'll ever know--forgiveness. Let's hope the lessons he'll learn at your sides these next weeks will carry him through the rest of his life and make his ailing mother proud of the new direction this young man is taking. Bless you both for all you're doing--for the listers, the Riverview Cemetery inhabitants and their descendants, and most of all, for reaching out to someone in trouble and showing him a better way. There should be more people like you on the planet. Michele from Michigan
I can attest to everything that Ken says. Tom is making every effort to make atonement for his actions. Neither of the other two have made any offers. I publicly commend Tom for the approach he is taking. He is accepting responsibility for his actions and feels deeply disturbed at what he did. I'll share something with you all that he said to me. While in jail, he was thinking of his mother who has some serious health problems. He thought of the possible brief time she has left and wondered how he would feel if somebody did to her tombstone what he did to others. It was at that point that he made a decision that he would make every effort to make right the wrongs he did. Today started somewhat difficult for me and I think Ken M. shared that feeling. We were told in advance that Tom would be assisting and I'll be totally honest, I had no idea how I was going to react to him being there. After somewhat a tense start, it became apparent that this boy was very sincere in his attempt to make atonement. As much as I wanted to be mad at him, my heart goes out to him. I don't want anybody to think I condone what was done. It is as despicable of an act today as it was the day it happened. There aren't any excuses for the acts and he said as much. He told us that he would help every Saturday we worked until the repairs were done. He needs desperately to spend time around people who will have a positive influence on him rather than lead him down the road to destruction. If Ken Murtiff and I have been delegated to be among the people to help in turning his life around, I'll gladly accept the assignment and am sure Ken will as well. Hi List!! I would like to be brief about this. This regarding the Cemetery. I had the oppurtunity to talk to one of the boys who were part of the vandalism rampage as well as having his assistance in the repairs. I'm doing this since it was requested by him to do so. Regardless of how angry some may be over this and their opinion on what should happen to them, we need to understand a little about Tom. Tom appears to be a very smart kid with a good head on his shoulders atleast to move in the right direction. Though there are some indications that is obvious that he has taken the wrong path. It's clear to see that he knows what he did and has excepted responsibility and is taken the steps to atleast in some small way pay back the community with service. Even though his childhood has been troubled doesn;t mean that what he did should be swept under the carpet, also I feel it's not all his fault in the same token. Yes he made those decisions himself. Tom feels also that since he broke them he should atleast help fix them. I hope this will be a turning point in his life as equally I hope all of us that take part in the repairs will have a positive impact on him. It was requested that he Thanks everyone for their part in the effort to repair and all assitance in every form that has been received. I personally would like to thank everyone for coming together from near and afar to atleast contribute in some way and that in itself says just how important our history is. Sincerly, Ken Murtiff

>from Steve K. > >Jean, That is a paragraph lifted from J.S. Africa's chapter on Barree Twp.; author is likely offering his best recollection in other words, hearsay. You can get the time frame exactly by checking the census and the yearly tax lists. Clues, Africa's chapter does not contain MAFFITT in its 1788 tax list as transcribed there, does show both William and Robert as farm owners in 1812. Woodcock Valley, Bedford County would likely be Hopewell Township... Thanks Steve. That helps a lot. It gets confusing because Bedford County has a Woodberry Twp. The Tax Records may be of help. I am searching Shenafelts, Shoenfelts etc. in Williamsburg. Upon completing 95% of the repairs on those two stones (as shown from Ken Boonie's efforts and great photography which I must mention that I didn't realize he took those other pictures , just shows how involved we were :)) those 2 questions were no more and converted to my thoughts that for generations to come that as a result of our efforts SOMEONE will be able to answer those questions for themselves. I don't need to be recognized or hyped up about the whole thing, it brings me great "PLEASURE" to know that people cared enough about those we never known that someday we have given the opportunity to allow someone the enjoyment to do so. Pat, Here is something you may want to keep in your file for future tie in. In Franklin County, "American Revolutionary Soldiers of Franklin County, Pennsylvania" by Virginia Shannon Fendrick, 1969, on page 207 the following O'Kane (O'Cain) appears: RICHARD O'KANE (O'CAIN) - April 4, 1741. Under this date Richard O'Kane was appointed a Justice of the Peace, John O'Cain of Guilford Twp., left a will in which he names "My brother Daniel O'Cain, his first son Richard my plantation;" To my sister's children; to Mary McClean; to Margaret McClean; and to my sister Mary Ramsey's son James Ramsey at end of 3 years. The executors were John Rannells of Antrim Twp.; Brother Daniel O'Cean. Dated Jan. 13, 1751; prob. Feb. 8, 1752. Penna. Arch 2nd Ser. Vol. 9, p. 789 This is quite a bit earlier than the line you are searching but perhaps they might tie in as you go back further. Alot of Huntingdon County residents came from Franklin County. Hope this might help! Helen
