Surnames: BROWN, HESS, FRICK, HANN Classification: Lookup Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/ZdB.2ACI/3144 Message Board Post: I am researching my great grandfather, James Franklin Brown who married Annie Hess and had 5 children, Vivian, Ethel, Vera, Doris, Ester along with 4 infants who died at birth. James was born on March 12, 1890 and died in 1965 if my records are correct. His nickname was "Babe" and he was also referred to as Frank Brown. My grandmother said his fathers name as Pete, but that could be a nickname. Any help would be appreciated.

    3. Did I answer this or did someone else answer it? Heading north into McConnellstown on your left is a big pool or spring called Buckey's spring. Buckey was the nickname of Col Bouquet of the French and Indian War. I think I did write you for I wrote that my ancestor, Patrick Lang, built the stone house behind it in 1828. I am mostly interested in the years from about 1860 to about 1900. I know that seems to be alot to ask, but I thought there might be a McConnellstown historian out there that just might know. 1. [PAHUNTIN] McClain Chilcote Houck Heck Wilson
    2. Anderson
    3. According to information at the Rootsweb WorldConnect Project pages and other web sites, the following McClain/McLains from Frederick County, Maryland, settled in Huntingdon Co PA and neighboring Bedford County around or prior to 1800: 1. JACOB McLAIN (1750-1835) married in 1771 Elizabeth Wilson, evidently the daughter of Thomas and Mary Wilson of Frederick Co MD. In the late 1770's, apparently, Jacob was living in Bedford Co PA on "Wooden Bridge Creek, a short distance above Woodcock's Mill." He was the nearest neighbor of Alexander "Double Alick" Alexander, who lived four miles away. In 1781 Jacob McClain served in Capt. Henry Rush's Company of Bedford Co militia. In 1793 one Jacob McClean of Dublin Township, Bedford County, applied for a tavern license. At that time he lived "at the foot of Sideling Hill, on the State Road, 23 miles from Bedford". The 1790 Bedford Co census shows the name "Bigard Head", who was probably Bigger Head, husband of Elizabeth (Wilson) McLain's sister Susannah. William Wilson (1755-1821), brother of Elizabeth and Susannah, was born in Frederick Co MD and reportedly came to Bedford Co in 1777, where he served in Capt. Charles Taggart's militia company. He died in Fairfield Co OH. 2. HANNAH McCLAIN (b ca 1760) married ca 1780 Jacob HOUCK Jr. Jacob Houck of Union Township, Huntingdon Co PA, left a will that was probated 1 Sep 1837. Granddaughter Emma Darlington Houck was born in 1835 in Fairfield Co OH. 3. AZARIAH McLAIN, b ca 1745, is said to have married Sophia Houck, sister of Jacob Houck, who married Hannah McClain. Azariah reportedly lived at least for a time in Dublin Twp, Bedford County, as did Jacob McLain. Presumably the Samuel McClain who was a witness to Jacob Houck's will was Azariah's son by that name. 4. COMFORT McCLAIN, born prob ca 1760-1765, died 8 Mar 1844 in Cromwell Twp, Huntingdon Co PA. She married Benjamin CHILCOTE in Frederick Co MD 1 Jul 1782. "Benjemine Chilcot" appears in the 1790 Huntingdon Co census. 5. ELIZABETH McCLAIN married Daniel HECK 1 Jul 1783 in Frederick Co MD. In the 1800 Huntingdon Co census the household of a Daniel Heck is listed near a William McLain and a Chilcote. Jacob, Hannah, Azariah, Comfort and Elizabeth may have been siblings, with other brothers and sisters who did not move up into Pennsylvania. If so, some of these may have been among the following, who married in Frederick Co MD: Joseph McClain, married Susannah Gossling; Mary McClain, married Jacob Hoffman in 1784; Susan McClain, married John Hinton in 1786; Joshua McClain, married Elizabeth Bennett in 1794; Daniel McClain (1749-1843), married Anna Elizabeth Marsteller in 1791 and died in Randolph Co, (West) Virginia. In among the microfilmed McLain/McClean Revolutionary War pension files is a 1917 request for information from a descendant of Daniel McClain (1749-1843). Her name was Cleo Lucille Daniels of North Platte NE, and she was inquiring about an Allen McLean from VA or MD. My notes indicate she stated that her grandfather's name was William McLean; his father was Daniel McLean, and his father was William, born in Scotland and driven to Ireland at the time of the persecution. Came to America and settled in Maryland, "we think near Hagerstown". Hagerstown is in Washington County, which borders Frederick County. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~quick/d0076/g0000004.html This web site gives information on the same Daniel McClain, stating that his father, William McClain, was born ca 1727 in the Scottish Highlands, immigrated to Hagerstown MD, where he died, and that he had seven sons. The "seven sons" concept appears also in the following account of the family of immigrant William McClean (b 1702) of Adams Co PA, which borders Frederick Co MD. =================================== >From the web site at: http://www.stenoien.com/mcclean.htm The McClean Family in Pennsylvania "WILLIAM McCLEAN was a seventh son; born in 1702 on the Isle of Mull, went to Ireland in 1715, married Miss Elizabeth Rule in Donegal, Ireland, February 20, 1733. They came to America after the birth of their fourth son, John, on May 11, 1740, and settled initially in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, afterwards they moved to the Marsh Creek Settlement in York County - now Adams County - near the eastern slope of South Mountain. Since he had six brothers older than himself, some of them no doubt came to America and settled in the same locality as did WILLIAM. The Marsh Creek burying ground contains numerous McCLEANs lying side by side. He was a Justice of Peace in York County 1774-1776. (See History of York County page 432). He died in York County June 13, 1785." [The account goes on to name William's children as William Jr. (b 1733), Archibald, Moses, John, James, Samuel, Alexander, Elizabeth and Joseph. One researcher claims William also had a son named Daniel (1749-1802).] ======================================================== [Please Note: In comparing elements of the Daniel McClain family tradition above with that of the Adams County family tradition, I'm not claiming that the Frederick County McClains are directly descended from William b 1702. But the two families may have been connected somehow.] Frederick Co MD records indicate a will is on file for a William McClain (Bk 3, p 526, somewhere between 1783-1794); also one for a James McLane (Bk 1, p 408, somewhere between 1744-1777). 1790 CENSUS, BEDFORD CO PA. Heads of household. Ezerah McLane John McLane John McLane Jacob McLane Mary McLane 1790 CENSUS, HUNTINGDON CO PA. Heads of household. William McLane John McLain Jacob Houk Elishea McLain Roger McLain Benjemine Chilcot Mordicia McLain 1790 CENSUS, FREDERICK CO MD. Heads of household. William McLain John McLain Joseph McLain William McClain ================================================== Would like to hear from anyone claiming descent from any of the above McLains/McClains. 2. Possibly my information may be of use. I have Robert and John Wilson in my files but the birth dates would be different. In the Shannon family James Shannon married Jane Smith Wilson who was the widow of Robert Wilson. Listed as Wilson children are Robert, John, Mary, Elizabeth and Martha. John had a son Hill P. Wilson. Martha married a Mr. Bell and moved to Iowa in 1850. I have no ages for the Wilson children but I am getting ready to pursue this area next time I go to Huntingdon County. Jane and James started a family with James II who was born on Jan 26, 1800. Please let me know if this information is of any help to you.

It is a biography on Orlando Gibson. Orlando Gibson, foreman of Pennsylvania Railroad car shops, Huntingdon, Pa., was born in Duncansville, Blair county, July 18, 1852. He is a son of Abraham and Sarah (Hamor) Gibson, natives of Blair county. Abraham Gibson was born in 1827; he now (1896) resides in Altoona. His wife was born in 1839, and died February 2, 1874. (Abraham and Sarah) had 6 children: Mary, wife of Charles C. Orlando Gibson was married in Altoona, July 18, 1872, to Annie C., daughter of Joseph and Charity Marshall, both deceased. Mrs. Gibson was born in Bloomfield, Perry county, Pa, July 8, 1854. 2. ancestry
    3. Hi Steve, That is my concern. It has been posted to many family web sites such as on ancestry.com , family treemaker and rootsweb and others are adding the information to their material and it is spreading as others come upon it. I have never found a source saying that Samuel Pheasant who arrived to Maryland from England ,husband of Elizabeth Eastep/Estep, had the middle name of James. Even what material was sent from Maryland, on his service in the Rev War, does not mention Samuels name being Samuel James Pheasant. I do not know who started this and that is why the posting in hopes who ever started the adding of James to the name, to make it Samuel James Pheasant , might see the query and be able to clear this up.
