I recently came across a biographical sketch of Doctor John Elmer Wilson, while surfing the web. The reference listed for the sketch was "History of Kentucky," edited by Judge Charles Kerr, and was published in 1922. I am related to at least two Huntingdon County Wilson lines, the line of Robert Wilson who married Mary Caldwell and George Wilson who married Margery Caldwell. This sketch includes a paragraph on the ancestry of John Elmer Wilson but I am not sure if he fits into either of my Wilson branches. Please let me know if you have information on the ancestors of any of the people mentioned in the following paragraph. "Doctor Wilson represents an old family of Scotch origin in Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania. He was born there at Warriors Mark August 17, 1865. His grandfather, Thomas Wilson, was born in the same county in 1812, and died at Warriors Mark in 1882. He was prominent in the coal industry and was a master collier. He married a Miss Hoover, also a native and life-long resident of Huntingdon County. Their son, Christopher Wilson, was born in 1836 and died in 1911, spending all his life near Warriors Mark as a farmer. He was a democrat, an active member of the Lutheran Church, and during the Civil war served in the Home Guards. Christopher Wilson married Miss Mary Martha Wheeling, who is still living at Warriors Mark, where she was born in 1846. Of her five children all three sons have earned creditable distinction in the medical profession. The oldest, Thomas L., is a graduate of the Baltimore Medical College and is practicing at Bellwood, Pennsylvania. The second son is Dr. John E. of Butler, Kentucky. The third child, Elizabeth, is the wife of William Wolf, a resident of Altoona, Pennsylvania, and for many years assistant health officer there. The fourth is Luella, wife of Edward Rumberger, a farmer near Warriors Mark. The third son, Harry, is a graduate of the Baltimore Medical College and is a pysician and surgeon at Warriors Mark."
No, it was not a hoax, I used it several days. Apparently, what happened was, someone shared the free trail with everyone and his brother and people like me who didn't know that it was a private free trail also passed on the information and when Ancestry.com found out that a zillion people were signing onto the site under one free trail period set up by a library they pulled the plug. Unfortunately, you can't use the passed on information any longer. I have been informed however, that your local library may be a subscriber of this service and you may be able to either sign on to it at the library or by linking to them at home if you have an active library card. You would need to check with your local library about this. Dick Eastman reported on abuse perpetrated by someone in Michigan that caused Ancestry.com to not allow access through home computers (via patron library card numbers using the library gateway). Ancestry had apparently allowed one library in Michigan to try this (as HeritageQuestonline does) and one person spread abroad the information needed to access the databases. Because it was obvious that something like this had happened when jillions of people started accessing ancestry remotely, they shut down this type of access and I'm afraid will be hard pressed to attempt it again in the future. <<I suspect that the site may only be for cardholders with that particular library. We can access Heritage Quest through our library, by entering our library code. I think our library pays for this data based on number of cardholders. We can access this site directly from our home computers. It might be a good idea to check with your own libraries to see if you can get access to Heritage Quest through them and also access to other data bases. For Ancestry we have access but must go into the library and use their computers--no at home computer access.>>
Hi, thanks to Sue and Elaine, I was able to finally find the roots of Regina Kemmler, for whom I was searching now for more than three years without success. I had no trouble accessing this and spent a couple hours getting some very good information. I suspect that the site may only be for cardholders with that particular library. Hi, I already got some responses and all of them were asking for the time frame I'm looking for. The letter from Robert E. Kemmler is dated February 19, 1892. His friend Zindel was obviously comeing to St. Louis. The letter originally is in German, here is the best translation I can provide, because the old German script fonts are difficult to read. ---- Actually I don't know anything of importance, other things we can discuss better personally. If you should come with the Pennsylvanian Rail Road, you should pay attention for the following areas respectively stations: Huntingdon, Petersburgh, Barree Forge, Spruce Creek, Tyrone, Altoona which I have made unsecure, as long as I stayed with my uncle. It's a pity, that you can't leave the train otherwise you definetely should stop there and visit my old aunt from Reicheneck, who would highly appreciate to hear something new about here hometown. ----- Any help would be highly appreciated. Hi, can anyone tell me on which railway people could come into Altoona and on which railway stations in the surrounding of Altoona the train did stop and which township didn't had a railway station. I'm still searching for Regina Kemmler, who probably married a Leonhard Zeilinger. A letter from her nephew gives a short description for a friend comeing this way and he should have visited his aunt, if the train would stop there. Any help would be highly appreciated. I have accessed this site for many many days using that temporary sign on. The password is case sensitive, I should not have typed it using a capitol "W" try just using the "welcome" in all lower case. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Nancy Thompson" <redheadnt@msn.com> To: <PAHUNTIN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, November 10, 2003 9:03 PM Subject: Re: [PAHUNTIN] Research Help for Census or New York Times > Be Careful what you put on RootsWeb - "Free 15 page website plus Free Startup WITH a $49 processing package."
