I'm hoping someone may have some ideas. I have learned from her obituary that she was "born in Black Log, Huntingdon and came here (Newport, Perry Co., PA) as a young girl". Her marriage notice in the newspaper has her surname as "M'Gervey". Our family records have it as "McGarvey". But I have searched and searched every possible spelling I can think of and cannot find her in ANY census records before her marriage. She should be in the 1860 and 1870 census records!!! Does anyone have any idea how to find people in census records when you aren't sure of the surname? I have looked for all Harriet/Harriett of her age and found nothing that matches her. The Harriet McGee that shows up is not her. Thanks so much for any help, Elizabeth ---------------------------- [My post in 2003} Is it possible to find an ancestor if I am not sure of the last name? I am trying to find my great-grandmother but cannot find even a trace of her before her marriage so I am thinking the last name I have for her could be wrong. I have this information: Harriet M McGarvey born Jan. 1, 1854 in Black Log, Huntingdon County, PA. She died in Harrisburg, PA in 1933. She married Solomon Zeigler in 1872. I cannot find ANY Harriet McGarvey in any census before her marriage in 1872. I am positive that the Harriet M is correct but maybe her last name isn't McGarvey. Is there a way to search other surnames that start with Mc, McG, etc to try to find her that way? Also, what Township would Black Log be in? Thank you.

I also have not been able to figure out where Benjamin Rough fits in the picture. I do not have him as one of Henry's children, but I don't have the names of all of them either (he had quite a few) -- so it is possible he may be a child of his. There are several connections to the Aurandt family as well. Henry's grandson, David Alexander (my great-greatgrandfather) married Ella Fink Aurandt, the widow of William K. Aurandt and the grandmother of Paul Harvey, the radio guy. I would be interested in any of the Rough church records you have found. I also have the names of several of Henry Rough's children (I got them from his will). So it is possible that one or more had married into the Gray or Merritt families (other than Benjamin).

I found three sets of a "History of Juniata Valley" online and one cd-rom of the same set. Email me off list if you're interested and I'll send the link. They run $175 to 195 and the cd is 15.99 used. Dave

Abraham, the father, died on 18 May 1830. They had been renting his father’s farm at the time of his death. Catherine later married John AURANDT of Canoe Valley, Blair County. They had two children - Josiah and Rachel, wife of John Carothers. Catherine died April 17, 1862. She was a member of the Reformed Church. 2-4 (1-1) John Graffius l754-1826 John Graffis, fourth child of Nicholas and Anne was born on February 24, 1754 at York. County, Pennsylvania. He was also a member of the American Forces from York County, Pennsylvania. He married Susanna Correll, a younger sister of Nicholas' wife, Elizabeth. Their children were - John (3-23), Mary (3-24), Daniel (3-25), Jacob (3-26), Abraham (3-27) Elizabeth (3-28), Susanna (3-29), Eve (3-30), Margaret (3-31), William (3-32), Sarah (3-33), and Catherine (3-34). John died January 1, 1826. Susanna's death date is not known. In the Tax List of 1783, York County, PA., John is listed as a waggoner with 4 horses and 6 persons. John and Susanna were married on December 28, 1780. There appears to be a discrepancy in the order of birth between Jacob (3-26) and Abraham (3-27) in this entry (Generation II) and the entries in Generation III where they are entered as Abraham (3-26) and Jacob (3-27). The bio gives him as the son of Samuel Fleming and Harriett Silknitter. In the 1880 census of Burlington Iowa, he is listed as John C. Fleming, age 29, physician, born PA, single. In the 1850 Huntingdon county census, this family is in Barree Twp, and James, father of John C, is a hotelkeeper, born c 1816. I have another John Campbell Fleming, born 15 Dec 1850, Dublin Twp, Huntingdon Co, son of James Fleming and Elizabeth Matilda Wilson. James Fleming (1805-1884) was the son of Robert Fleming (c1777-c1858) and Catherine "Kitty" Campbell who were married 18 Sep 1800 by Rev David Denny in Path Valley. Catherine Campbell was the daughter of William Campbell and Hannah Young of Fannett Twp, Franklin Co. Robert Fleming was the son of James Fleming (b before 1756- d bef 4 Dec 1825 Dublin Twp, Huntingdon Co). The other children of James Fleming (b 1805) and Elizabeth Wilson were: Jane J. 1841, Robert Morton 1843, Anna Catherine and William McGuiness, twins born 1846, Joseph Wilson 1848, James Harper 1849, Hannah Elizabeth and Thomas Elliott, another set of twins born 1852, Rachel Ellen 1855, and Hadessa Mary 1856. Could the two John Campbell Flemings be cousins, both descendents of James Fleming who died c1825?
