    3. Carolyn, If You have Ancestry census? If you know about where she lived? Put in the given name HARRIET, You may need to scroll several pages? That's how I found a couple of people They were hard to read so index wrong. They had TARR as Tare with a / in front of the T it looked like a G so was indexed as Gare, now indexes as Sare???. The second was FINCH and indexes as Finck. Good luck with your search. Iris ----- Original Message ----- From: "Carolyn K. Ask yourself why she came to Newport as a young girl. Parents may have both died. Mother may have died, father remarried, sent Harriet off to be raised by relative. Mother may be a McGarvey, Harriet out-of-wedlock, sent as a baby to live with relatives. Alternatively, father may be McGarvey, mother not married, same scenario. Out-of-wedlock could explain the daughter not knowing her grandparents' names. I would look in Newport and rural areas near Newport in those census years for a litlle girl named Harriet, under any surname, with any family, could appear to be a daughter or other relative, could even show as domestic helper. Might take awhile but you might find her. Spelling: try Mac instead of Mc, try McCarver... but probably the McGarver is the one. Townships: Cromwell and Shirley in Huntingdon, Lack in Juniata, in that order south to north, cover all of Black Log Valley. I heard that there once was a Black Log Post Office in Lack Township, Juniata County.

There was a Valentine Rauch (or possibly rau or Raugh) listen in the 1790 census... I believe in Huntingdon county, but I cannot remember for sure. I haven't come up with any connection to my Rough's but that doesn't mean anything since I know so little about siblings and parents on this family (they hid quite well I've found). My grandfather Raugh (the current spelling of the last name) died when I was young so I was never able to ask him anything about the family, and his siblings are all dead as well, so even family lore is unavailable to me.

They are (and not necessarily in birth order): Soloman (who I am decended from, who married Hannah Geissinger, daughter of John Geissinger and Hannah Sellers), Elizabeth, Mary, Jonathan, Catherine, Sarah and Margaret. The 8th child may have been a daughter named Sally, or possibly Sally was just the nickname of one of the other girls. Sally was the name of a child of Henry's that I got from another source other than his will. The only child other than Solomon that I have any information about is Catherine because she married into the Aurandt and Graffius families. I would appreciate you sending me that PDF file. 3. In the 1850 census of Shirley twp, Huntingdon County, there is a David, Simon, Thomas and William McGarvey, all in Shirley Twp, and all of the right age to have a child in 1854. If your local library has ancestry.com, you could read the 1860 Shirley twp to see if anyone has a Harriet. 3. Hi, Thank you for your prompt reply. I have already checked those four men in the 1860 and 1870 census records and none have a Harriet or a daughter of her age. Her death certificate lists both of her parents names as "unknown". It seems strange to me that Harriett's daughter, who seems to be the one who provided the info for the death certificate, would not have known her mother's parents names.
