As Manager of the Community Home he was first appointed in 1927, and has given first-class satisfaction. For eighteen years was with the P.R.R. as machinist, draftsman, inspector, and other positions of more or less importance, and for five years conducted the Springdale Water Company, of Huntingdon, Pa. During the World War was with Motor Transport for a period of six months at Pittsburgh, Pa.: joined at Altoona, Pa.; was discharged December 18, 1918. A member of the American Legion, No. 24, Huntingdon, Pa.; also Camp 321, P.O.S.of A., Huntingdon, Pa. Has four brothers: Harry J., married to Anna Ge! arhart, Pittsburgh, Pa., Auditor Pressed Steel Car Company; John R., Oakland, California, manufacturer and wholesaler of furnaces; Paul R., married to Bertha Reese, Altoona, Pa., hardware dealer; James W., a chemist, of New York City. Mr. Gearhart is a Republican. Bowling and baseball are his favorite sports. He was married to Bessie Long, of Huntingdon, Pa.; they have on son, John William, aged seven years, at school. Mr. Gearhart is well adapted for this caretaking position, and takes an interest in its care and keeping. A mild-mannered man, well liked by the patrons of Huntingdon's Community building.

    3. Simon Gratz Orbisonia, Pa. Retired: Simon Gratz was born at Orbisonia, Pa., March 29, 1880. His grandfather was a land owner; came from Philadelphia. The Gratz clan dates back to the Revolutionary War; they were among the financial backers of Washington's Army. Simon Gratz, of Philadelphia, was a cousin of his grandfather, Simon Gratz, Sr., who was for many years at the head of the school system of Philadelphia. Simon Gratz, the subject of this sketch, is a son of Harry Gratz, who was born in Orbisonia, Pa., March 26, 1855, and died in the house in which he was born on February 6, 1921, at the age of sixty-six years. He married Louisa Gorsuch, who died November 22, 1924, at the age of seventy years. Simon Gratz was engaged for years in Missouri, Kansas and Oklahoma in electrical work, with telephone and telegraph companies; was a painter and contract painter for fifteeen years. Enlisted in the Spanish-American War at the age of eighteen years at Lewistown, Pa. He was a member of the National ! Guards located at Lewistown, Pa. He was mustered into service May 10, 1898, at Mount Gretna, in Co. G, 5th Penna. Vol. Inf. He was all throughout the campaign; went to Camp Thomas, Chickamauga, Georgia, to Lexington, Kentucky; was on thirty-day furlough, was in Peace Jubilee, Philadelphia, witnessed by President McKinley. Governor Hastings was War Governor; he was once commander of 5th Penna. Infantry; Company was down to nineteen in number with a war strength of 106 men. He belongs to Camp 45, U.S.W.V., Lewistown, Pa. A Republican. One brother, Marshall, of Pontiac, Mich. Two sisters, Mrs. Harry Zartman, Roaring Springs, Pa., and Mrs. Charles Miller, of Pittsburgh, Pa. Simon Gratz was married to Catherine Holden, a daughter of James and Jennie Holden, living at Orbisonia, Pa. Two sons, Marshall, thirteen years, and William, twelve years.

He has three brothers: Charles, a cabinetmaker and picture framer, Mount Union, Pa.; Frank, shipping clerk, York, Pa., married to Lillian Myers; William, an auto mechanic, York, deceased sisters: Harriet, died at the age of thirteen years; Viola, died in infancy; Anna, at the age of seven years. John A. Gross was married to Daisy May Leggett; she is deceased. One daughter, Violet May, married to W.H. Miller, a World War veteran, an instructor at the Kistler schools, Mifflin Co., Pa.

Under the Wilson Administration she was appointed postmistress, and has rendered good service to the public. Through her supervision the mail is thoroughly taken care of in a careful and prompt manner. Her husband, Goerge Garner, was a World War man, 151st Inf., Co. C,; enlisted at Huntingdon, Pa.; to Camp Merritt, New Jersey; overseas to Brest, France, in hospital serveral months; was guarding German prisoners near firing line. Served eleven months; returned t! o United States; discharged. Mrs. Garner has five sisters: Mary, married to Chester Spyker; Viola, married to Leon Wilson, Huntingdon, Pa.; Bertha, married to Samuel Shultz, Marklesburg, Pa.; Sara, in training for nurse at Blair Memorial Hospital, Huntingdon, Pa.; Elizabeth, married to Randall Brumbaugh, Marklesburg, Pa. One brother, John M., at home, graduated in High School class of 1929. George Garner, her husband, is with the Huston Motor Company, Huntingdon, Pa. Mrs. Garner takes an interest in local affairs, and belongs tothe Civic Club.

    3. G.C. Grove Hesston, Huntingdon County, Pa. Merchant: Born at Grafton, now called Hesston, Huntingdon County, Pa., October 16, 1868. A son of A.F. Grove, who was a merchant for twenty-five years. The father of A.F. Grove was Jacob Grove who died at the age of eighty-seven years. A.F. Grove died June 15, 1890, at the age of fifty-four years. He married Annie Corbin, who died in 1872. The Groves have been residents of this section for one hundred and twenty-five years. G.C. Grove began his early school training at Grafton, Pa., and later attended the Martinsburg School, a boarding preparatory school. He assisted his father in business and on June 27, 1890, he began his business career at Grafton, Pa., as a merchant. He has always enjoyed a good patronage. He is a member of the Christian Missionary Alliance church as advocated by A.B. Simpson, of New York. He is a strong adherent to its cause. He believes in the doctrine of the Democratic party. He has one brother, F.J. Grove, station agent, Hesston, Pa. On! e sister, Maud, married to J.M. Hoover, who died; remarried to Valentine Bush. One brother died in infancy; also a sister. G.C. Grove was married to Unity Rickeard, of Hesston, Pa., a daughter of Elijah and Sarah Rickeard. They have two sons, Elijah, with his father in business, and G.C., Jr., auto salesman, Huntingdon, Pa. Two daughters, Grace, married to Charles Zauzig, a signalman, Penna. R.R., Huntingdon, Pa., and Sarah, married to Charles Reams, Philadelphia, Pa.

    3. Milton H. Garner Aitch P.O., Huntingdon County, Pa. State Highway Department: Was born at Entriken, Huntingdon County, Pa., May 28, 1876, and at Entriken began to learn the mysteries of an education. He is a son of John G. Garner, a Civil War veteran, 53rd Reg., Penna. Vol. Inf. Fought at the battle of Gettysburg and at Bull Run. Was a farmer for several years; an employee of the Huntingdon and Broad Top Railroad, who died in 1923, aged eighty-two years. He was married to Jane B. Showalter, who died at the age of forty-seven years. Milton H. Garner has been practically all his life a farmer, witht the exception of a few years with the H. & B.T.R.R. He is at present with the State Highway Department, having commenced in 1929. Both he and his wife are members of the Reformed church of Entriken, Pa. He was on election board at Grafton for one year; also one term on the school board at same place. He is a Republican. He has one brother living, Harry S., of Lincoln Township, a farmer. John B. and Philip I. died in infa! ncy; Grant was killed on the railroad, aged forty-seven years. One sister, Maggie, who is married to George Wallace, Lincoln township. Minnie May died in infancy. He was married to Mary L. Kyler, a duaghter of John and Nancy Kyler. One son, Clair O., married to Grace E. Grubb, Penn Township. Two daughters: Almeda G., married to Stever Forshey, of McConnellstown, Pa.; Edith, of Pittsburgh, Pa.; one daughter, Ruth, deceased, two years old.
