    3. Broad Top Borough is in Huntingon Co., I believe it is Todd Twp. Broad Top today has about 400-600 residents, it is not a very big area. My grandmother lived in Broad Top until 1992, and I still have relatives there. 3. Hi Bea, My George Wm Mitchell was married to Florence B. Shipton born in 1878, and died in 1942.George was the son of Josiah B Mitchell and Elizabeth Wilson. George and Florence has several children, but several of them died very young. The store that he owned is at the intersection of Rt 26 and 305 in McAlevy's Fort. I think they are the correct #'s. It is still there and is owned by Denson Groenendaal. I was there last summer and met with him. He was very helpful and knew some of the Mitchell family. I think he lives in Huntingdon, PA. Another person who may be able to help you is Paul Fagley, who works at Greenwood Furnace. His wife is related to my Mitchells, through the Traxler family. I have more info, if this is your family. If you have the books by James O. Smith, there is info in them . There are 3 books that he wrote, but I've been told there are mistakes in them. I don't have anything about a Stine family. I have been searching for Samuel S Mitchell's parents for quite awhile. Samuel was Josiah's father, and also the father of my great grandfather, James A. Mitchell, who was also born in McAlevy's Fort. There were 8 children in the family. James left there and ended up in Cheltenham, PA., near Philadelphia, after the Civil war. Samuel died in McAlevy's Fort, but nobody knows exactly where he was born. The census says he was born in PA., so I'm checking the counties around Huntingdon Co. I have a George Mitchell on the other side of my family, but he was from Indiana Co. and later moved to Blair Co. He first moved to Carson Valley, and then to Altoona, where he died. He fathered 25 children !!!! There were 2 wives. The first one had 5. She died having the 5th child. The child died also. 3. Hi Judy, I'm also from Altoona, PA. Small world. My sister Kay Little lives in Acworth, GA., also a suburb of Atlanta. She is also from Altoona and has lived in Acworth for more that 20 years. She has 5 grown children, and they all live in the area. Her on son is a detective with the Cobb Co. Police Dept. My husband was from Altoona also. He died of cancer 3 years ago, so I don't get up there much. I want so much to go again, but I just don't want to drive all that way by myself. Last June I got up there for a week. My next door neighbor went with me as far as Charlestown, MD, and the I drove the rest by myself and picked her up on my way back. I think I'm related to all the Mitchells in PA., because I have Mitchells on both sides of my family and even my husband's father's brother was married to a Mitchell. One of my Mitchel families was from Huntingdon Co., and the other one was from Indiana Co. Both were very large families. You asked if I was related to Ken. I have son Ken Nedimyer, who lives in the FL Keys, but I am related to all the Nedimyers in Altoona, and all that have the name spelled like mine. It was a huge family also, and the original family came from Germany about 1850. The name was spelled a little differently then, but was changed shortly after that. A lot of them lived in Cambria Co., PA. If you knew Dick Nedimyer in Altoona, he is my husband's brother. He still lives there. He was a mailman and played baseball. Everyone in Altoona knew him at one time, I think. There is a Vince Nedimyer that is a teacher and he is a relative also.I think his father was a brother of my husband's father, but I'm not sure. There were 17 children in that family. My great grandfather, George Mitchell fathered 25 children !!!! They lived in Altoona also. Some of my cousins are still there. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Judy Banja" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, August 06, 2006 2:01 PM Subject: Re: [PAHUNTIN] Mitchells > Hi Dolores, > > Bad news! 3. Hi Dolores, Bad news! I'm from Altoona, PA, but I've lived in the suburbs of Atlanta, GA, for 20+ years, and get up to central PA about once a year if I'm lucky. I'm just the volunteer Mifflin county coordinator, and maintain that site and the Mifflin Archives pages for those who wish to add files. Why not submit a query on the Mifflin RootsWeb board or the PAMIFFLI mailing list? You may find a cousin, or at least a couple of good leads. The Mifflin county researchers are a really good group of folks, and very helpful. I like working with them! Judy P.S. 1. Naming patterns and cousin confusion
    2. Kathryn M. Doyle
    3. Lana, I think that this happens much more than is realized. With the prevalence of naming patterns among many ethnic groups and the large size of families in earlier times, it would be quite common for several first cousins to bear the same name. Unfortunately, now with the easy exchange of information the mistakes are copied and become "truth." This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Houck, Corbin, Clark, Cassady, Hatt, Devor, Peterson, Baker Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/ZdB.2ACI/3579 Message Board Post: Hi, I am posting this in case anyone has grabbed my gedcom off of rootsweb, because I found a major error in the last day. I will try to make this as simple as I can. (But it won't be easy!) William Houck and Eleanor Ellen Hall, married 1792, had your typical dozen children. I am descended from their son Elijah, who married Delia Corbin. Among their children was a Sarah Ann, who "I" blissfully married off to John Heeter, based upon his biography. I just got letters written by one of Sarah Ann's brothers to his nieces and nephews that lists his sister Sarah Ann as beng married twice, once to a Mierly and once to a Benson. Obviously, I think a brother is a pretty good source, so I started digging. Till I finished I found that the Sarah Ann Houck married to John Heeter was the daughter of Adams Houck, Elijah's brother. Yes, these two Sarah Ann Houcks were 1st cousins, born within about 4 years of each other, in the same area. Elijah's daughter Sarah Ann was married to John A. Benson. Well, if that wasn't enough to confuse me, this John A. Benson's brother was ALSO married to ANOTHER Sarah A. Houck (listed as the daughter of Solomon Houck), a slightly more distant cousin! Do you think Thanksgivings at their home were confusing???? Anyway, if anyone has pulled gedcom information from me, you will want to correct this. I have it our there correctly now. Also, if you are a Houck researcher, I just got a booklet written about the Civil War and the involvement of he and his two brothers written by Elijah Corbin Houck that I am willing to share. Sooner or later it will get to my website. Lana
