    1. Seeking descendents of Thomas Haris and his wife Charlotte Allie Clark
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/ZdB.2ACI/3595 Message Board Post: This Thomas Harris was married to my great grand aunt, Charlotte Allie Clark. Charlotte's dob is 14 Oct 1847. Thomas died sometime between 1910 and 1923. They had two daughters, Lulu (Mrs Frank Bard) and Caroline (Mrs Johnson). Caroline moved to Wyoming where they had a cattle ranch. Her husband died by 1928. The Bards were in Shirleysburg, PA, and had several children. The Harris's must have also had at least one son, who may have died young, because in 1910 the elder Harris couple were raising their 9 year old granddaughter, Agnes Harris. I would like to connect with these cousins. If this is your line, please contact me. Lana Clark

    3. David & Kathy, Got some info for you from head of PA USGenWeb Archives - see Joe Patterson's note to me below your query. Has to do with pre-war militia vs. Rev. War Pennsylvania Line. The mailing list Joe's referring to is PENNSYLVANIA, a RootsWeb list. Link to it is on this page, first one listed. http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/usa/PA/misc.html (It's a great list, but generates a lot of mail.) HOWEVER..... do have an insight or two. Likely better place to ask the question would be on the Pennsylvania mail list..... As I understand it, the "classes" had nothing to do with rank or position. They were subdivisions of a company for purposes of managing the unit. Certain classes might be called up for duty and that responsibility was rotated.... Might have called two or three classes at a time so all the males of an area were not called away from home at once. Not sure that all colonies used the same system...... Obviously this would not apply to units raised for the war, in PA, called the PA Line.

    1. Rev War Dummer Boy Question
    2. David & Kathy Wells
    3. I am in hopes someone with Military 'know how' can help me with this question. Most counties had their own Militia in the REv. War. I am particularly interested in the two listed below. There is a Joshua Brown that is a Captain in one County Militia, and a Joshua Brown is listed in the Lancaster Militia as an '8th class'. In other words you have the officers, then you have 1st class with about 20 men listed, then 2nd class with about 20 men listed.....on down to the 8th class with about 10 men listed. Someone years ago quoted that the 8th class meant 'drummer boy'. There are 10 men in that 8th class, did they have 10 drummer boys?? In one of the Bedford Co. units they have 'drummer boy' listed seperately, not under one of the classes. This may seem trivial, but it is important in that many old researchers referred to our Joshua Brown as a 'drummer boy' just because he was listed as an 8th class in his Battalion. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Kathy Wells. We have the following examples of military units: ----- 1780, 1781, 1782 - Cumberland Co. - Pennsylvania Archives", 3rd series, vol 23, pg 806 (also in 5th Series, Vol 6, pg 562) shows Cumberland County, PA Militia, Capt. Joshua Brown's company, return of his class roll for 8th battn. , commanded by Col. Alexander Brown for 1780-1781-1782. Also is 2nd class James Brown & John Brown in that Cumberland Battln. -----1780, 1781 - Lancaster Co. - "Pennsylvania Archives" 5th Series, Vol 7, pg 566,567 shows 3rd Company of 6th Battn. of Lancaster Co. Militia commanded by Capt. John Duncan in 1780 - pg 568 Jeremiah Brown is a 3rd class, Joshua Brown is 8th Class; pg 579 also shows same for 1781, but pg 580 now lists also Joshua Brown Jr. under 8th class. 3. Thanks, Teresa! I didn't know this publication existed. I have relatives buried at Gilboa myself (Joseph & Annie Reck). This cemetery is not far off Rt. 522. As I recall (it has been a few years), when you are heading south on 522, you turn right and the cemetery is on the right, tucked onto a relatively steep hill. It is amazing how they got some of the stones up toward the top to the gravesites. Can you look to see if there are any other Ripples mentioned in the cemetery records? I know Donna is trying to confirm some of Jacob's children. Thx. Title: Rung's Chronicles of Pennsylvania history : a series of historical articles / by Albert M. Rung, as published by the Huntingdon, Pa., Daily news, 1946-1951, reproduced from the newspaper originals with the addition of introd., biographical sketch, photos., notes and index. Publisher: [Huntingdon, Pa.] : Huntingdon County Historical Society, c1977. Description: Book xiv, 478 p. : ill. ; 29 cm. Notes: Bibliography: p. 469-470. Includes index. Subject(s): Pennsylvania History, Local. Huntingdon County (Pa.) History. Other contributors: Huntingdon County Historical Society, Huntingdon, Pa. Other title: Daily news (Huntingdon, Pa.). Chronicles of Pennsylvania history. I don't see this first volume listed on the Huntingdon County Historical Society publication list at http://www.huntingdonhistory.org/ so I suppose it's currently out of print. I do see volume 2 listed - Rung's Chronicles of Pennsylvania History, Vol. 2, 1984, by Albert M. Rung. Reprints of 200 columns for The Daily News, 1951-1957. Hardbound, dust jacket, indexed, 384 pages, 7 1/2 x 11 You can get volume 2 from the HCHS for $26.50 plus s/h. Rung's Chronicles is not an old book - that first volume was published in 1977. I don't see any copies of volume 1 on abebooks.com. http://www.abebooks.com/ or alibris http://aol.alibris.com/ Is anybody on the list with HCHS - do you know whether volume 1 will be reprinted by HCHS? It sounds like something I'd love to read, but the price is pretty steep. Technically, we're not supposed to talk about books and prices on the RW lists (whoops), but I think it's useful to know what's out there, where for-sale and library copies might be found, and what it might cost, and I can't see that a polite discussion could be offensive. If anybody has the volume 1, perhaps we could find out about that index - as in, "Is it a complete index of names?" Judy PAHUNTIN List Admin
