    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: GordonBonnet29 Surnames: Scott Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.pennsylvania.counties.greene/6232.3.1.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi, Just to put my two cents' worth in: After researching this family exhaustively for over 30 years -- my grandmother was a Scott, born in Greene County -- I have found no hard evidence that Catherine was a Hamilton. She may have been, but if so, it's not recorded anywhere I've ever found. She has at least two descendants named Hamilton Scott, which is suggestive, but at the moment I have her as Catherine ___. In response to the other post on this thread, I also have heard the allegations of Hannah Courtwright's Native ancestry. My grandmother also claimed to her dying day to have Native blood. (I heard Mohawk, not Shawnee, but the tradition of the Scotts having Native ancestry has come down in several branches of the family.) Again, I have no hard evidence of it. Some have claimed that Catherine (maybe Hamilton) was pure Mohawk, but if so, there seems to be no record of it. Catherine's youngest daughter, Cassie (Scott) Stockdale, lived long enough to be in a census which recorded race, and she's shown as white. Of course, many people in the 19th century who had Native ancestry were eager to hide it, so it could be that she was "passing for white," as it used to be said -- but if she was half-Native, it's hard to imagine that everyone in the area wouldn't have known about it. Anyhow, that's my opinion. There's precious little documentation on this family, and (honestly) none prior to about 1790 -- so any speculation on the early history of this family, prior to their emigration to Greene County, is just that -- speculation. cheers, Gordon Bonnet Trumansburg NY Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
