The purpose is to create a global (every message on every board) searchable index of Surnames. Now, as genealogists, we all know the value of an index, don't we? Think about how hard it would be to find a library book without the card catalog! These boards have an "Advanced Search" feature which allows searching *only* in the surnames field, which is vital for such surnames as James, Thomas, Born, Few, Husband, Cousin, Street and States. >From the Board FAQ (link at bottom of page): "Once you have typed your message, enter all of the surnames mentioned in your post in the "Surnames" field. Please include only surnames that are mentioned in your post- not all surnames you might be researching. If you wish, you can include surname spelling variations for the surnames mentioned in your message." So, please remember: -fill in the surnames box so your message WILL be indexed -not to include other words such as "and others", "etc.", "Greene Co." or any word that is not a surname. -include *only* those surnames (and spelling variations, if you wish) that are IN your message.
