They were Church of the Brethern, sometimes referred to as "Mennonites" because of their leader Simon Mennon. This sect of the German Baptist Church settled all along the Pa. border with Maryland and Va. Many of them moved into Pa. from Frederick CoMaryland. A great book for this is Pioneers of Old Monocacy "the Early Settlement of Frederick Co., Maryland" 1721-1743 by Grace L. Tracey and John P. Dern, Genealogy Publishing co., Baltimore Md. Peter Pickenpaw was in the Frederick Co., Md. Muster Rolls of 1757. It is my feeling that all Pickenpaw/Peckenpaugh variations came from Beckenbach of Germany. My family is John Caspar Bechenbach.
