I looked up Samuel Grove in the full report and found that he was on the jury and also mentioned in testimony a number of times. I have an ancestor named Samuel Grove who had a son by the name of Samuel Grove but they both lived in Meigs County, Ohio in 1859. Does anyone have more information on the Samuel Grove affiliated with the Zimmerman Murder Trial? George was born in Dec 1863 in Monongalia Co, WV. I think his parents were Napoleon and Matilda West. In June 1892, George was married to Rebecca Alice Gordon. She was born about 1853 and was the daughter of John Adam Gordon and Rebecca Slater Crawford. Rebecca was a young child when her mother died, and she was raised by her paternal grandparents, Mark and Susannah (Shriver) Gordon. She was about 40 years old when she married George (who was ten years younger), and there were no issue from the marriage. They lived on a farm in Whiteley Twp. In 1909, George was Greene County auditor. I have not been able to find a death date, burial site or obit for George and Rebecca Alice. Can anyone help? Rush Mill in Richhill Twp., at the Morris Twp. boundary and very close to Washington County. In 1977, Alvah J. W. Headlee and some ladies from the Cornerstone Genealogical Society created an index for the 1865 maps. In addition to an alphabetical listing of all persons named on the maps, they also made lists by Township of all churches, schools, post offices and various businesses named on the maps. Richhill Twp. lists four saw mills by owners' names, then "M. Crow grist mill, a saw and grist mill by E. Milligan, J. Rush mill, and G. Vanatta steam and water mill." At the end of the "Grist and Saw Mills" section, it is noted that "The first construction of frame houses was in full swing and lots of virgin timber was still standing -- thus accounting for the large number of saw mills." J. Rush may well have had a both a saw mill and a grist mill at the same site by 1865. A saw mill would have been a new and profitable addition to an already existing grist mill operation. There were several Rush's living just inside Morris Twp. across from the mill, so he may have lived in one township and worked in another. Hope this helps. The Compiler - A Democratic And Family Journal (Gettysburg, Pennsylvania) September 14, 1857 Hail Two or Three Feet Deep. - The Waynesburg (Pa.) Messenger says that a very severe hail storm visited Greene county, near Freeport, last Sunday week: The hail came down in a perfect torrent; the stones varied from the size of a partridge to that of a hen's egg, and came with such force and in such quanitities as to do great damage to nearly everything in the track of the storm. Shingle roofs were split to pieces, and growing corn was perfectly stripped of its blades and shoots, the apple trees were left naked of their leaves and barren of fruit, the buckwheat was entirely destroyed, the forest trees were left almost as naked as in midwinter, and the fruit trees of all kinds were almost stripped of their foliage and fruit. The fowls that were without shelter were killed by the weight and the force of the hail-stones. Mr. Dunn exhibited to us his hands, which were much bruised and swollen from the pelting received while engaged in holding his horses. He assured us that after the storm he had driven through banks of hail-stones from two to three feet deep. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Thanks June 27. 1859 The Republican Compiler Speculators and the Frost The late frost produced all the more consternation in Western Pennsylvania, from the general scarcity of grand, and speculators anticipated immense profits. The Waynesburg Messenger gives the following, as indicating the temper of the people of Greene County: John Patterson had purchased on speculation, a quantity of wheat and had on hand at Rush's Mill, in the edge of Washington County, about eighty barrels of flour. - When the blight came, there was but little old wheat or flour in that region, and Patterson asked $15 per barrel for his. On last Friday some fifty person and twenty teams went in procession, in open day to the mill, took Patterson's four, left pay for it at the rate of $8 per barrel, hauled if off, and divided it among those considered most needy.- Some of the most respectable citizens of that portion of the counter were concerned, and public sentiment there justifies the act, upon the ground that the flour was to be removed. They were willing, and did pay a fair price actually necessary to prevent famine, and that it was about for it, and took the only means left to prevent if being removed to Wheeling where Patterson had gone to sell it. A quantity of wheat, lying at another point, and belonging to the sam! e man, was similarly disposed of the same day." Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
