I get lost in them searching my lines! I love them...it helps to put ancestors in their old stomping grounds, and make it more familiar to me. I found another one that you may be interested in also. It was for a 500 A tract of land to the widow of Col. Benjamin Flowers, circa 1776? It was in western Pa, north of Pittsburgh, south of Erie, Pa. This is the first that I've seen his name on the western side of the state. This would have been approximately 110 to 150 miles north of Greene County. I saved the map, but it was one on the Darlington site called "Donated lands Northwestern Pa." (I think I have that right.) I couldn't get it to work, but I'll Google to find the maps. I have an enlarged copy of the original patent map (prepared in 1907, I believe) of Monongahela Twp., which is also available in the book Early Landowners of Pennsylvania:Atlas of Township Warrantee Maps of Greene County, PA, by Sharon Cook MacInnes and Angus MacInnes (Apollo, PA: Closson Press, 2005) Unfortunately the maps reproduced in this book are too small for me to read, but the tables and background information are very useful. The book includes all townships. This is where I found William Gapen's tract, "Snipe." He must have owned more property, but it was probably by deed transactions, and I don't have access to them at the moment. This is to a map of 1792 Greene and bordering counties in Pa. You can resize, zoom, toggle N,S,E,W, etc. This is just one of many maps available through Univ. of Pitt/Darlington Collection. You'll probably want to search more specifically to the area you are actually researching, but this map gives an idea. If I can find one, there are maps in this collection that actually give the names of landowners and tracts on the map itself. I've used them successfully in my research in Va., WVa., and Pa. Anyway, hope the link works and it proves helpful. In the 1772 tax list for Springhill Twp., Bedford Co., I find a Thomas Gooden and a William and Joseph Goodwin. Later, I find a Daniel Gooden in a land record for Zachariah Gapen, dated 1786. 1. [PAGRE] Dripps and Vanausdal Families
    2. Several ancestors lived Franklin Township starting by 1788.? One, John Dripps and family immigrated from Ireland in 17 (?).? The other, Cornelius Vanausdal moved from Berkeley County, WV about 1787-8.? At that time, Franklin was in Washington County since Greene was not formed until 1796. I am trying to find the grave site for the Dripps family and especially an early marriage bond for John Drips, JR, and Elizabeth Vanausdal who married in 1805.? John Dripps SR died in 1817 and wife probably about 1830. Aside from Cornerstone Gen Society, is there anywhere in Greene/Washington that would likely have early records (courthouse or otherwise)?? And, the Dripps family was likely Presbyterian if there was a church in or near Franklin in 1805.? Is there a list of early churches in that area (John and wife Nanny Agnes Dripps may be buried in a church cemetery)? Since I live in Atlanta, planning the time needed to complete research and find records is limited.? Also, is there a researcher in Greene I may want to contact and ask to do some advanced work for me? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Tom Chrisman

I am looking for any information about Samuel, slave or free. I also went back to check on a couple of census years and see the Flowers surname. This is not a complete list of Gapen (various spellings)or Flowers census information for Greene County but here is what I have at hand. In 1790 Zachariah, Stephen, William and John Gappin are all in Washington County PA. This could be what is now Greene County as Greene was formed from Washington. There is also an Aron, David, James,Samuel and Thos Flowers in Washington County. In 1800 Stephen, William, Eli, John and Zachariah Gapen are all living in Dunkard Township. Stephen has one slave in his household. I noticed that Aaron, David, Rachel and Thomas Flowers are all heads of households in Greene Township. By 1810 Eli and William are in Greene Township while Stephen, John and Zachariah are still found in Dunkard Township. Stephen has 2 Free Persons of Color in his household. William has 2 Free Persons of Color in his household. David and Aaron Flowers are also heads of household in Greene Township. In 1820 Samuel Gapen "Free Coloured" head of household is living in Dunkard Township..Stephen Gappen is in Dunkard Township There is another Gapen "Gappin" in Dunkard Township but the census page is cut off not giving the whole first name. William Gappin and Mary A. Gappen are heads of households in Greene Township. It appears that Eli Gapen has moved to Wayne County Indiana. In 1830 Samuel Gapen "Free Colored" is head of household in Dunkard Township. John and William Gapen are living in Monongahela Township. There is a Zachariah Gapen in Clearfield County PA, an Eli Gapen in Wayne County, Indiana and an Eli Gappin in East Bethlehem Township, Washington County PA. If you are in need of further census information on this family let me know and I will be happy to look it up for you. Thank you for any information you might share that could lead me to more about Samuel Gapen. Jan Slater Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
