"Thomas Jefferson Evans was a school director and went to supervise a 'box social" at one of the Springhill Twp. schools in Greene County, Pa. The Jobes brothers were rowdy and he settled them down. They left and went out the ridge where he would be going home in his buggy. A huge rock was thrown at him and struck him in the head. He lived a couple days but died [March 14, 1878] as a result of the head injury." Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Very good info Leslie. I was JUST on there this morning..cussing. Its very frustrating when you get results that say records found...and then they don't dispaly them. Thats if you can even get the site to work. -------- Original Message -------- Subject: [PAGRE] West Virginia Vital Records site From: "Leslie Nelson" <myancestry@rogers.com> Date: Thu, May 14, 2009 10:45 am To: "PAWASHIN" <PAWASHIN@rootsweb.com>, "PAGREENE-L" <PAGREENE@rootsweb.com> This is just FYI, in case others are having problems accessing BMD certificates at [1]www.wvculture.org/vrr/ (the West Virginia vital records site) for our southwestern PA ancestors who wandered over the state line. The site is very slow, and the results page indicates records are found but won't display them. I've been experiencing this for a few weeks now, on different computers and internet connections. I emailed the site staff about this problem. They told me that my searches are timing out because their aging servers are having trouble handling the large volume of requests. Until they can get the servers replaced they suggested I try searching at off-peak hours, such as early morning. Another workaround is to use the WV databases at the Family Search pilot site ([2]http://search.labs.familysearch.org). The records there don't contain as much detail as the certificates, but it's a lot better than nothing - and the Family Search site has a better search engine. Thanks for the heads up on what's going on with that site. It's been driving me nuts the past couple days because if I put in the entire name it won't locate any records but if I put in part of the name and use the wildcard it locates all sorts of names for me. Today I located 1 record I was hoping to find, forgot to save it searched for something else and when I realized I didn't save the record it took me 20 minutes to get it to come back up. Hi Carole, Mrs. Charity Axtell, (col'd)...appears in the Waynesburg Business Directory, Caldwell's Atlas, 1876...Greene County. One particular Charity Iams married Silas Axtell. Members of the Axtell family were Preachers in Washington Co. It is possible the Axtell's were URR and Charuty Iams a free person of color? I am still researching my theory on Charity Iams. And I believe there may be several Charity Iams. In Greene and Washington Counties. Also listed In Caldwell's is: Mrs. R. Clevinger. (col'd). Another mystery. Carole, The document you mentioned is a rather large book. I have a copy, and it is pretty thorough collection of Iams history. I'm descended from the Iams of Greene Co., the most recent one being Elizabeth Iams who married George Smith in Greene Co.in 1826. She was the daughter of Thomas Iams and Mary Jane (Polly) Smith of Greene Co. I would be interested in hearing from anyone descended from these Iams. Carole, I am not specifically researching this family but did find notes that a John Iams born Greene County abt 1809 married a Sarah McVey born 1810 Washington County PA and they both died in Iowa.? I will look for more Iams information in my files. Dear List, Ok, I messed up big time! I don't know where my head was, but I was thinking there was only going to be one researcher on this list for Iams. That is, Iams from Greene County, PA. Obviously, there's more than 1! I've already heard from 3 so far. If there are any other researchers of Iams, please hold your emails! The reason I was asking is that I have a collection of Iams info. Why, I don't know! I'm not related to the Iams. They did, however, live next door to my gg grandparents, Hiram and Nancy Simpson, in Bristoria, PA. I guess I was hoping the Iams could help me with my research. Anyway, that didn't pan out. I'm cleaning out my genealogy files. I'm getting ready for a trip East and will have several days free to just research my family. This will be the first time in a zillion years. I came across this IAMS collection. I don't need or want it. If there was only one researcher, I would simply mail it to him/her. This isn't the case. So, to ensure this resource is available to all Iams Researchers, I'm going to take this collection with me to Cornerstone in Greene County. They have surname files. Look for it to be at Cornerstone mid-July. In the meantime, something that may help is a document that's apparently entitled, "Iams of America" Landed Gentry of Maryland: Patriots, Pioneers, and Successful Americans." It's Edited by Ralph D. Reynolds, M.D., 319 Paoli Pointe Drive, Paoli, PA 19301 (1998). It includes: Iiams, Ijams, Iames, Eyoms, Jiames, Ijames, Ijems, Jiams, Jiemes, Iiames, Imes, Hioms, Eyeams, Ijemes, Yams, Iimes, Ims, Emson, Ems, Eyoms, Eyans, Jams, Iioms, etc. Again, sorry for the confusion.
