    2. J.A. Florian
    3. Depending on how that foot stone relates to the tombstone, I wouldn't assume the baby had no name. I take it you are thinking "I" was for "Infant"? What about Boys... Isaac Carroll? Ian? Ike? Isheal? Ignatius? Immanuel? Girls---- Isabella? Ida? Illa? (iLLa) There are a ton of "I" Biblical names, such as (with meanings): Ibhar Chosen by God. Ibnijah Whom God will build up. Ibri Hebrew. Ibzan Illustrious. Ichabod No glory. Iddo His witness, timely. Idumea Red. Igal Avenger. Igdaliah Whom God makes great. Ijon Ruin. Ilai Exalted. Imlah Full. Immanuel God with us. Imnah Prosperity. Imrah Interchange. Imri Eloquent. India Country of the river Indus. Ira Wakefulness. Irad Fleet. Iri Urbane. Irijah God sees me. Isaac Laughter. Isaiah Salvation of God. Iscah To watch, observant. Ishbak He releases. Ishi He saves me. Ishiah God will lend. Ishijah God will lend. Ishmael God will hear. Ishmaiah God will hear. Ishod Man of glory. Ismachiah God will uphold. Ismaiah God will hear. Israel Prince that prevails with God. Issachar God has given me my reward. Ithamar Island of palms. Ithiel God is with me. Ithmah Orphan. Ivah Ruins. Ivory Tusk of elephants, tooth. Izri Creator. As to NOT naming, Censi show many 2 years olds who were still just called "Baby" or "Junior" (Jr) but the child had not been given ANY name. Some mothers find it too hard to name a stillborn or lost within a few days. If mom and baby died in childbirth (or the baby survived then died), Dad may not have named the child. Some religions believe you have to have a name to get into heaven, but many other religions don't place emphasis on any name or naming, at any age. Example: Catholic churches encouraged naming because they baptized deceased babies, but Brethren don't do baby baptisms. And in another light.... sometimes living babies were put outside to die....for any number of reasons..... while other women longed for pregnancies they could not have.... Which is to say.... Every woman and every family play their own role in how they proceed with the death of a baby----maybe some moms or parents had no preference to name or not name? 2. Rick, In the 1850 Census for Ohio, Meigs county, Bedford Township, I found: Samuel Kirkendall, age 35, farmer, born PA, owns real estate Mary Kirkendall, age 32, born VA Sarah Kirkendall, age 7, born PA Elizabeth Kirkendall, age 3, born PA Milo Kirkendall, age 1, born PA Looks like husband, wife and 3 children. The childrens' names and ages match up with Sarah, Elizabeth and Miles Swearingen from your 1860 Census. Perhaps they were the nieces and nephew of Henry Swearingen. Swearingen and Kirkendall-Kirkendoll-Kuykendahl, etc. are old, common names in SW PA. I suspect they are all siblings (with the exception of Henry's wife) as Henry is too young to be the father of most of the children. I am assuming that perhaps their parents just died and the family moved to Meigs as many of the people of SW Penn did. Does this family appear familiar to anyone? 1850 - Ohio, Meigs County, Bedford Twp SWEARINGEN, Henry D. born 1832 PA -Mary (wife of Henry), b. 1821 PA -Sarah (sister of Henry), b. 1844 PA -Elizabeth (sister of Henry), b. 1847 PA -Miles (brother of Henry), b. 1849 PA -Samuel (brother of Henry), b. 1851 PA -Mary (sister of Henry), b. 1853 PA -Cyrus H. (brother of Henry), b. 1855 PA Henry and Mary are then found in Meigs in 1870 with a child Florence (b. 1861 OH). Henry's sister Mary marries Edward Shumway in 1874. No other information is known.
