There were some Rush brothers and their combined families that migrated to Greene county from New Jersey in the late 1700s/early 1800s. There were some others who migrated from Virginia, and there may also have been still more who came from other areas. John, Jesse, Jacob, and William who came to Greene county from New Jersey with their families are in my ancestral line, but I still need to verify this........... I recently found it at my library as my ancestors are from there. I made note of one item because of the HILL surname. I think you will find it interesting because it mentions the MITCHELL and MORRIS surnames. It is a letter written by a woman in Monroe County Ohio about her family from Western PA. I didn't write down everything but here it is: Sarah Morris, wife of Joseph Morris, was the daughter of James Hill and Elizabeth Mitchell. Sarah Hill was born 1795 in Hillsborough, Washington County, PA. James Hill's parents were William Hill and Elizabeth Atkinson. James Hill was the first to be born in the U.S. - William coming from Ireland. Hope this helps Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I am forwarding this from the local library where I do most of my research. Read this and think what the proposed changes could do to your research personally, and what it could mean to those who use the library for so many other reasons. Vickie Good afternoon library supporters. There has been a flurry of activity in Harrisburg over the last 24 hours and I wanted to give you some brief background and ask, once again, for your help. No doubt you will be reading more about this in your local papers over the weekend. First, this coming Monday, July 13, the House Appropriations Committee will meet to discuss and, perhaps, vote to move S.B. 850 out of committee and onto the House floor for debate and a vote. If this were to happen, a vote in the full House of Representatives would not take place any earlier than Monday, July 27. You'll recall that S.B. 850 is the Senate-passed bill that would chop 53.4% from library funding and leave library services in shreds. Under S.B. 850, the public library subsidy would be sliced in half; the same for the State Library and the Electronic Library Catalog (which includes the ACCESS PA database and Ask Here PA.) Library services for the visually impaired and disabled would lose about 2%, but the POWER Library, statewide card and interlibrary delivery services would be eliminated at the state level. And finally, the Keystone Fund for library construction would be eliminated as well under S.B. 850. All in all, more than $53 million in library services would be slashed out of the current total of $97 million for all library appropriations (including $2.7 million in Keystone Funds.) Bear in mind, all of this would take place at a time when libraries are bursting at the seams serving people looking for work, families on tight budgets, and retirees grappling with shrinking savings. The Democratic leadership in the House believes that this strategy is necessary to move the process off dead center given resistance to any new taxes. The leadership believes that showing the public a budget that is balanced on cuts alone is needed to mobilize public sentiment in support of some new revenue measures to preserve vital state programs. To put it mildly, this is a high-risk strategy. But first things first. The House Appropriations Committee will meet at 4:00 on Monday. Between now and Monday at 4:00, we need every person possible to be on the phone with members of the House Appropriations Committee and with House leadership in both parties. Tell them that S.B. 850 will devastate library services in their district and be sure to tell them what services you will be forced to cut; 2. Tell them that your library is bursting at the seams serving their constituents hard-hit by this economy; 3. Urge them NOT to send S.B. 850 from the Appropriations Committee to the House floor; 4. Remind them that a 53% cut to library services is way out of proportion and directly harmful to the very constituents who are relying on library services now more than ever. If we cannot block this ill-advised action on Monday, then we will have two weeks to organize for the floor vote, including PaLA's already-scheduled Call-In Week, July 20-24. More on that to come. Thanks for all that you have done and continue to do. We will do our best to keep you updated as events unfold. Glenn Glenn R. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: rchgck Surnames: Ullom, Vernon Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.pennsylvania.counties.greene/11124.2.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Thanks for your reply. I am not sure I can figure Elizabeth Ullom into this information as she was born about 1802/3. I know she married Warner Vernon and I also know she lived until the 1890s in Fayette County. She could be connected to this family but I probably need to do more research and dig a little deeper. The Ullom family gets confusing because the name seems to have changed spellings several times. Here's a related question regarding the Shriver family on the recent Shriver/Jackson discussion. ?I am researching Peter Livingston (b 1775) who was reportedly married to a Margaret Shriver (daughter of Jacob and Elizabeth in Greene), according to several researchers. ?Peter and Margaret then moved to Fairfield County, Ohio about 1805, then on to Licking County where they lived until they died in the mid 1800's. ? Some of their children were born in WV but adjacent to Greene County, PA. ?The Margaret Shriver cited in the discussion was born about 1789. ?Is it possible she could be the same Margaret who married Peter Livingston? ?Are there any records for a Livingston family living in or adjacent to Greene County, PA? Thanks in advance for any comments you may have. I'm interested in learning more about the Wilsons who married into the Pettit families in Southwestern Pennsylvania, specifically in Greene County. According to the "The Tenmile County and It's Pioneer Families", two children of Nathaniel (b. 1762 NJ) and Sarah Fonner Pettit married two Wilson women. Nathaniel Pettit (b. 1796) married Rachel Wilson and Jesse Pettit (b. 1805) married Charlotte Wilson. My interest in these families is that my Wilson family is suspected to have come from SW PA prior to Ohio. Two of my ancestors married Pettit girls in Meigs County Ohio in the mid-late 1800s. Specifically, David Wilson (b. 1854 OH) married Eliza Pettit in 1875 and John W. Wilson (b. 1850 OH) married Mary Pettit in 1873. Thanks in advance for any help, Rick Wilson New York, NY rwilson7@aol.com
