Dear List, What follows is a letter I copied at Cornerstone, Greene County. It was in the STALEY surname file. I'm emailing all the lists as the surnames and/or towns cross over. I'm thinking it may be of interest to others on the list, especially since it mentions so many surnames. Please note that I typed it exactly as it was written. Carole Federal St. Box 65 Perryopolis, Penn August 1, 1952 Mr. Albert MOREDOCK Waynesburg, Penna Dear Sir: I am interested in tracing my ancestry for historical purposes, and through a mutual friend, T. P. SHARPNACK, of Charleroi, your name was given me, and thought it possible you might be able to advise me, if you are not already acquainted with those to whom I refer. It occurs to me that you may very probably be personally acquainted with a number of my kinfolk, as I was born at Ruff Creek in 1896, daughter of Demas and Frances Martin STALEY. My mother died when I was three, and a year later I was adopted by William and Ella NUTT of near Rices Landing. In 1909 they moved to Point Marion and thus I rarely saw any of my family until I was grown and the older members were gone, so know little of them. Of my father’s people, I have heard him say that all of his grandparents came from Germany and I have record of a Michael STAHLE who came to Pennsylvania in 1767. He was the son of Peter STAHLE, of whom I know nothing else except that he had a daughter Barbara who died young, and possibly a son Jacob. Whether they came direct from Germany, or from another state is unknown, or whether Michael was child or man is unknown. However he had nine children, six of whose names are known, five sons, Daniel, Jacob, Christian, Frederick, Peter, and one daughter Martha. Daniel married Elizabeth KRAFT daughter of Hans KRAFT and lived at Elliott’s Mill, Grove Run, Maryland. Peter, who was my grandfather, and the only one for whom I had dates, was born July 4, 1813, and died September 1, 1878. He married Mary WEAVER September 17, 1837 and was united in marriage by John PETTIT EDGAR. Of the WEAVERs, I know exactly nothing except birth and death of Mary, and a supposition that she was the daughter of a Mrs. Bethany WEAVER, whose death is recorded in the Bible belonging to Mary, which is in my possession. The record as give, of the STAHLEs is taken from the fly-leaf, of what I assume was the old STAHLE Bible, and is written in pencil and badly torn. Peter and Mary (WEAVER) STALEY had seven children, in order, Martha who married John BRISTOR, Ruffs Creek, and had two children. Margaret Ann, died young. Josephus, who is known to have fought in Civil War and died soon after, unmarried. Isabelle, unmarried. George Washington, married Martha SWAN of Rices Landing, and moved to Iowa. Milton, died young, and Demas, my father. Of Peter’s descendants I have a fairly complete record, but have gone into it in such detail in hope I may thus be able to trace peter’s brothers or perhaps uncles of whom I know nothing, but know my father had numerous cousins. Of my mother’s people I know just about as much. There seems to be more MARTINs than SMITHs, all coming from New Jersey, and no two of whom I have contacted being connected. Her father was Israel son of Isaac and Margaret (ANDERSON) MARTIN. She was born in 1805 daughter of Israel and Amy ANDERSON of whom I know nothing more except they both died in 1862 and that they were somehow related to Mrs. William EDGAR of near Marianna. Of Isaac I know nothing, but have record of a Bateman MARTIN who was born in 1794 who may have been a brother. Isaac and Margaret MARTIN had seven children, in order, John, Phoebe who married David POTTS but left no descendants, Israel – my grandfather, Benajah and Peter, twins. Bonapart, better known as Bonum, and Bateman, who was twice married and had four sons but left no descendants. His second wife was Caroline PIPER a full sister of my grandmother Elenor (PIPER) MARTIN. Their father was George Washington PIPER born 1788 who was twice married. His first wife being a Mrs. WARD, mother of Phineus WARD, and three other sons and their children Edward, Rose Ann, and Sarah. The second wife was Susannah FRYE, mother of Marinda BLACK, who married Tunis MILLER and lived at Amity. They left descendants but cannot trace them – their two sons are deceased. George PIPER’s second set of children were Elenor, my grandmother, John FRYE, married but left no descendants, Caroline, married Bateman MARTIN, William HOGUE PIPER who married Margaret FRIEND. They had nine children (the PIPERs in and near Marianna, and of whom I have a complete record), Morgan, unmarried. I know nothing of my grandfather MARTIN’s brothers or uncles or of George PIPER’s near kin, and have found none of the FRYEs, though I believe the name is variously spelled FRY and FREY, and find there were a number by that name settled at what is now Monongahela, and believe there were also WEAVERs settled there. I know also of a Harvey FRYE who owned property near Albany Hills, Brownsville, Pennsylvania. Both Israel and Bateman MARTIN served in the Civil War, and there was a Colonel George PIPER (not the one mentioned) who owned the PIPER Inn at Pipersville, Bucks County, Pennsylvania and served in the Revolutionary War, but if there were others who served in any of the early wars I do not know. Any help you can give me in tracing any of these families will be greatly appreciated. Thanking you. I am sincerely, Mrs. Lloyd L. HOUGH ___________________________________________________________________________ Staley Mrs. Lloyd L. HOUGH, Federal St., Box 65, Perryopolis, PA 1952 I am a daughter of Demas & Frances (MARTIN) STALEY, of Ruffs Creek – 1896 – Mother died when I was 3 years old and I was adopted by William and Ella NUTT. My father said all his grandparents came from Germany – I have Michael STAHLE to PA 1767, son Peter, who also had Barbara and possibly Jacob. Michael had Daniel (married Elizabeth KRAFT, daughter of Hans), Jacob, Christian, Frederick, Peter (7-4-1813/9-1-1878, married Mary WEAVER 9-17-1837), Martha. Mary WEAVER, probably daughter of Bethany WEAVER. Peter and Mary WEAVER (STAHLE) STALEY had: 1 Martha married John BRISTOR – Ruffs Creek – had Margaret Ann and Josephus 4 Isabelle unknown 5 George Washington – Martha SWAN 6 Milton 7 Demas 2 Margaret Ann 3 Josephus Frances MARTIN STALEY, daughter of Israel and Israel, son of Isaac and Margaret (ANDERSON) MARTIN Margaret, daughter of Israel and Amy ANDERSON (both d. 1862) who were somehow related to Mrs. William EDGAR of near Marianna Isaac MARTIN may have had bro. Elijah/Elizah was born in Whiteley Twp., Greene Co., PA and is supposed to have married Elisabeth PATTON and then moved to IL. I can specifically identify Elijah/Elizah in the 1850 census, but NOT after that. Where was Elijah/Elizah at the time of the 1860, 1870, 1880 and 1900 census. What did he do for a living? When did he actually move to IL? Did he marry, and if so, to whom? Was it to Elisabeth Patton (or someone else)? IF it was Elisabeth Patton, who were her parents and where was she born? Robert Earl Ketchem suggests that she was born in 1830 and died in 1924 (in IL), but I can't find her in the census.
