I found this additional remembrance on page 2 of the same newspaper. Note the difference in the name spelling. The Charleroi Mail Monday, March 18, 1912 Page 2 PICKED UP IN PASSING The announcement of the death of Pat Bayne (sic), the Greene county giant, will recall the visit to Charleroi of that noted personage, whose stature made him great instead of his name, during the Ringgold Cavalry reunion a few years ago. Bayne stood seven feet four inches in his stocking feet, and weighed 300 pounds. With a white stovepipe hat and arrayed in a long blue frock coat with brass buttons, Pat carried the flag at the head of the parade of veterans, and was the center of attraction wherever he went. At the campfire of the reunion, held at the Coyle Theatre, calls were made for Bayne to appear on the stage and make a speech. Talking in public was not Pats forte, but the calls were so insistent that comrades pushed him along toward the stage door. In trying to enter the door to go upon the stage Pat nearly knocked his head off, because the door was so low, which created much merriment in the audience. He finally gained the stage, and stretching his immense bulk to its fullest height, he extended his arms and said: Well, here I am. Take a look at me. I would make a speech if I could and tell you something funny if I knew how, but I dont. Then with a modest bow, the good natured giant left the stage, creating more amusement by creeping through the doorway that led to the auditorium, in order to avoid his first catastrophe on entering. It is related of Pat by some of his comrades here that once when the Ringgold Battalion was in a fight, several of the companies which usually scouted and fought alone and independently, happened to be collected. The cavalry was dismounted, and were vigorously defending their position. An officer from another company, seeing the towering form of Pat in the line of battle, thought the man was needlessly exposing himself and called out: Hey, you there! Get down off that stump! Youll get killed. Eva in Tallahassee Eva Dayle Zippay Tallahassee, Florida [email protected]
While researching in some old newspapers I found this article which may be of interest to some. The Charleroi Mail Monday, March 18, 1912 Page 1 BANE ANSWERS THE FINAL CALL Famous Greene County Giant Dies at Washington Hospital Was Familiar Figure William P. Bane, aged 63, better known as Pat Bane the Greene county Giant, died at the Washington Hospital Saturday night. He spent the greater part of his life in Washington and Greene counties. Bane served with the Ringgold Battalion in the Civil War and was reputed to be the tallest man in the Federal army. In his prime he measured seven feet, four inches and weighed 300 pounds. He has attended practically all the national encampments of the G.A.R. and his figure became familiar from coast to coast. In parades he was usually placed at the head of the column to carry the flag. Bane has visited Charleroi several times. His most notable visit was during the Ringgold Reunion that was held here some years ago. Bane was an expert shingle maker and spent much of his time after the Civil war among relatives in Greene county pursuing his trade. The coffin in which Pat will be buried on Wednesday with full military honors will be the largest ever ordered from Washington measuring seven and one-half feet. I'm hosting a page for 2007 REUNIONS concerning ANY family who at ANY time had connections in Washington County PA. So far, we have 2 reunions listed, and the organizers are hopeful to reach long-lost relatives. The page is located here: http://freepages.family.rootsweb.com/~florian/family-reunions_2007.htm Web indexing will reoccur every week, so you'll need to check back to see if there are new reunions posted. If you send a notice, don't forget to send "updates" if you need to add information. Families were spread over SW PA, and could include Washington, Greene, Allegheny, Mercer, and Westmoreland Counties -- either in the past or present. Also families moved west and south, so many people live elsewhere but have some connection to Washington County. If you are planning your reunion, and would like to spread the word for FREE, send me a notice of your event. Please use email:: [email protected] Please include: - A title for your reunion (ex. 2007 Florian Family Reunion, or whatever your creativity dreams up) - ALL surnames involved, even the collateral lines if they are invited (begin with most important first, in case I need to shorten this part) - If your reunion has a "theme" - the "areas" of USA involved - you can list Counties + States where descendants moved to... - Date(s) of event -Where, give full address and directions. Important to give a LOCAL number so if someone gets lost on the way that they can contact "someone" -Times -- and if the time varies each day; when reunion ends - If persons need to pay for entrance.... or need to bring something other than their smiling faces... - If you need them to bring history, photos, etc. to share - ** A contact person with mailing address AND email address - Comments or message you'd like to include. It'd be nice to include a suggestion of possible lodging for out of town attendees. If you aren't sure if your reunion belongs on this page, send it anyway and we'll "talk" and see if I can accommodate you. The actual place of the reunion does not need to be in the county, but at least one of the families needs to have or have had some connection to Washington County PA (since this is a website for this county). I'm pretty open about inclusions -- I believe if a person lived in the county even a short-short time, they are part of the Washington County history. They really are trying to put us out of business! I can see a raise in prices, but from $37.00 to $125.00? Please forward this to lists you belong to. Jocelyn in Ohio On the NARA pension records price increase from $37 to $125, comments to the proposed rule may be posted online by April 27, 2007. Go to: http://www.regulations.gov In the search box, type "NARA Reproduction Fees." The Proposed Rules and the Rules will come up. You can click on the text to read them. Then click on the yellow emblem by the first line - Proposed Rules - and fill out your name, zip code, etc., and make your comment. I would think legislators should be contacted also. Perhaps NGS/FGS will be leading an effort. Thanks. Tom Neel, OGS Library Director

I am trying to find out who was buried in the Pickenpaugh Graveyard. The graveyard is in Dunkard Twp., Greene Co., Pa. on the old Pickenpaugh land, which is on the Pa. and WV. state line. The Pickenpaugh family owned the land from about 1780 to about 1830. I suspect that the graveyard was started about 1786 when Johann Peter (Beckenbach ) Pickenpaugh died and continued until after 1830, when the land was sold to someone else. I have been told that the cemetery has been destroyed, and is no longer there. I am hopping that someone has very old cemetery recored, and can help me. The Pickenpaugh and Fortney family lived on the land. I think that they belonged to as religious group called Dunkers. The Pickenpaugh and Fortney family were Lutherans of German descents. Would there be any church or other records that would help me. Any help or ideas would be appreciated. I thank you for any help that you can give me. Richard Swank in California
Hi all, I'm still trying to find the parents of my Nancy (Slater) Donahoo, b. 1798 in PA, d. August 13, 1875 in Greene Co. (where she spent most of her life). She married William Donahoo and had seven children. I had worked for years under the assumption that she was a granddaughter of Thomas and Eleanor (Eden?) Slater, early settlers in Waynesburg, but one by one I've ruled out all of their sons as being Nancy's father except for two -- John and James -- about whom nothing is known and who seem to have left SW PA before 1800. So it's looking increasingly unlikely that Nancy was descended from Thomas. This has left me wondering where she could have come from. I know from the census that she was born in PA, so I started looking in adjacent counties. I found in Fayette Co. a Slater (Slator, Schletor, Schledorn) family, of German descent, who apparently lived near enough to the border with Greene Co. to at least make it feasible that she could have come from them. Does anyone on the list know anything about these German Slater families, or about any other Slater families in SW PA? I've been searching for Nancy for 30 years, and feel no closer to finding out who her parents were now than I was when I started. Anything, even hints, would be appreciated. cheers, Gordon Bonnet Trumansburg NY

For those of you who had family that migrated into Southwestern PA from Augusta/Frederick/Hampshire Counties, Virginia, you might find some information in this Hampshire County excerpt from "Allegheny Passage" about the Church of the Brethren or Dunker/Dunkard religion at this link: http://www.tarvinfamily.org/cacapon.php . Click on the book cover to access the .pdf file. There are several surnames common to SWPA i.e. Bowells/Bowlus, Chrisman/Christman, Cracaft, Newcomb, Tarvin, Corbeley, Bozarth/Buzzard, Engel, Rice, Miller, Parish, Larue/Larew, and Enoch to name a few. I have been researching my husband's 5th great-grandfather, Jonathan Nixon who was in Westmoreland/Fayette County from about 1776-1788. All the information I had found referred to this Nixon family being of Quaker origins from Bucks County, PA. But when Jonathan left PA and moved south of Fairmont, WV, he and his descendants were members of the Boothsville Baptist Church (2 grandsons were Baptist ministers) and I could not figure out the connection of how they went from Quaker to Baptist. The above book excerpt turned on the lightbulb Jonathan and possibly his father George became members of the Dunkers (early Baptist church) due to the lack of a Quaker settlement in their part of Virginia. The Dunkers/Dunkards were also considered one of the "plain people" religions, simple living and pacifists similar to Quaker/Amish/Mennonite and Capon Chapel in Hampshire County was one of the early Church of the Brethren. This church was built on land owned by the Nixons. Jonathon Nixon was in German Twp, Fayette (formerly part of Springhill Twp, Westmoreland) 1776-1788 and there was a Church of the Brethren (now Mt. Moriah Baptist) in the neighboring township at George's Creek, Georges Twp, Fayette County as early as the 1760's and also churches at Ten Mile (1759), Dunkard Bottom (1752, Dunkard Creek) and Monongahela (1752). I think Jonathan emigrated to SWPA possibly to escape the Revolutionary War encroaching upon Virginia as he had a wife and two children and came here because of the Church of the Brethren being present in this area. The problem is the early Church of the Brethren kept few records as to members, births, marriages or deaths until the late 1780's so documented proof of membership is difficult.
