Okay all you FOX researchers...I have a brick wall that I've been trying to break down for years, and hope someone may be able to help me. Does anyone have a female FOX in their line that was probably born around 1845-50, worked as a housekeeper for the Phineas HEADLEE family in Perry Twp. in the 1860s, and had a child out of wedlock during that time? My husband's great grandfather, Lafayette HEADLEE, was supposedly the illegitimate child of Joseph K. HEADLEE and an unknown FOX. Lafayette (aka Lafe) was born 8 Apr 1865. His father Joseph was only 19 at the time and still living with his parents, Phineas and Nancy (KEENER) HEADLEE. The story goes that young Joseph got the family housekeeper pregnant, and that Joseph's parents raised the child. However, I can't find any evidence of this at all...no census listings, no mention in Phineas's will, nothing. I haven't found young Lafe living with any FOX families, either, nor with his father Joseph K. HEADLEE, who later married Mary Jane DULANEY (daughter of Abraham and Susannah LEMLEY DULANEY). The only real "proof" I have of Lafayette's parents' names is his own death certificate, which lists his father as Joseph K. Headlee and his mother simply as FOX. The informant was Lafayette's wife, Mary (KIGER LEMLEY) HEADLEE. I do have Charles Fox's FOX book, which by the way is a fabulous resource, but it hasn't given me any leads on this mystery. Roland Dulaney Furlong's book mentions this family, but I believe his information regarding Lafayette is incorrect. So...if you're still with me :) does anyone have a female FOX in their line that was probably born around 1845-50, worked as a housekeeper for the Phineas HEADLEE family in Perry Twp. in the 1860s, and had a child out of wedlock during that time? Thanks in advance for any help! I believe Jane's parents were John Shriver(1763-1831) and Alice Richards(1766-1816) I have their sixth child as Jane (21 Mar 1802- 7 Jan 1831) That matches except for the day yours Mar2 mine Mar21 which could be a typo somewhere. Alice Richards is the sister of my line Ann Richards(1774-died between 1850-60) married to Jonathan Morris. They migrated to Guernsey/Noble Co Ohio area around 1817. Alice and Ann were both daughters of Henry Richards born in England and died in Fredrick Co, VA. I didn't have Jane's spouse, just her birth and death date and I don't have a source listed on my computer file. (My paper files are buried.) MILLER, Edgar Holmes : Edgar Holmes Miller, a druggist of Salisbury, is a descendant on the paternal side of natives of Ireland, and on the maternal side of natives of Scotland, which countries have contributed their quota to the citizenship of America, the representatives therefrom being among the public-spirited and patriotic men who have aided in building up the communities in which they located. The earliest member of the Miller family on record in Pennsylvania was Christopher Miller, who was born east of the Alleghenies, of Irish ancestors. In 1782 he journeyed west and settled in Washington county, Pennsylvania, where he secured a "tomahawk claim" of four hundred acres. He married and was the father of four sons, each of whom received one hundred acres of the homestead farm. John Miller, one of the four sons of Christopher Miller, was born in 1780. He married, in 1802, Margaret Guy, born near Fredericktown, Maryland, who bore him six sons and one daughter. Christopher Miller, son of John and Margaret (Guy) Miller, was born in Donegal township, Washington county, Pennsylvania, February 14, 1811, on his father's farm, part of the original "tomahawk claim," and here he always lived. His wife, Sarah J. (Knight) Miller, bore him the following children: William, deceased; John, deceased; Calvin, Lehman, deceased; George, Charles W., see forward; Mary Jane, Margaret and Emily. Charles W. Miller, son of Christopher and Sarah J. (Knight) Miller, was born March 15, 1848. He was a miller by trade, but for many years has been a traveling salesman for a prominent wholesale house of Pittsburgh. He resides in Claysville, Pennsylvania. He married Nancy Elizabeth Holmes, born May 28, 1852, and their children are: Edgar Holmes, see forward; Willard H., a druggist of Berlin; Alice Pearl, and Lulu Elizabeth. William Holmes, great-grandfather of Nancy E. (Holmes) Miller, was captain of a ship plying between Norway and Scotland. He was accidentally killed and was buried in Norway about 1782. William Holmes, son of William Holmes, emigrated to the United States in 1830, landing in New York. He journeyed through Canada, seeking a location, returned to the United States by way of Niagara Falls, and finally decided to locate in Washington county, Pennsylvania, where he secured a farm which has ever since been in the Holmes name. He returned to New York for his family, came by water to Baltimore, Maryland, and thence by wagon over the Cumberland road to Claysville. George Holmes, son of William Holmes, was born in Saltcoats, Scotland, May 13, 1820, a farmer of Claysville, married Elizabeth Snodgrass, and they were the parents of Nancy E. (Holmes) Miller. Edgar Holmes Miller, eldest son of Charles W. and Nancy E. (Holmes) Miller, was born in Dallas, Pennsylvania, January 30, 1877. He attended the public schools, graduating from the high school of Claysville in 1897. The following year he entered the Pittsburgh College of Pharmacy, from which he graduated in 1900. After completing his professional studies, Mr. Miller selected Salisbury as a location and there in August, 1900, opened an up-to-date pharmacy, which is a model of appointment and efficient service, and here he attained financial success. In April, 1905, in company with his brother, Willard H., he opened a drug store in Berlin under the firm name of Miller & Miller, and in September, 1906, the firm added another store by the purchase of the drug business of W. C. Martin at Munhall, Pennsylvania, a business founded in 1875. Mr. Miller is a Republican and a member of the Reformed church. Although a young man and not long a resident of Somerset county, Mr. Miller has made for himself an honored name in the community with which he has cast his lot and where his social and business qualities have won him many friends. Mr. Miller married, September 19, 1900, Mary Edith, born January 19, 1876, daughter of T. H. Sawhill, of Claysville. She was educated in the schools of Claysville. Their children are: Edgar Holmes, Jr., born June 10, 1903, and Darrell S., born June 20, 1904." History of Bedford and Somerset Counties, Pennsylvania" Bedford County by E. JOHN FOX planted a sugar tree (as they called it), on the hill above the house to mark the burial place. Big JIM DULANY (as he was called), told JOHN FOX that when he died he wanted to be buried under that tree. John carried out his wish and shortly after he was buried the tree died. John was very upset - - - but soon another tree came up in its place. CARPE DIEM, Lori ; ) in Arizona formally from Washington, Pa. CHUCKLE: Learn from the mistakes of others. THE SHRIVER FAMILY in the book " THE TENMILE COUNTRY AND IT'S PIONEER FAMILIES." The Shriver Family of Greene County may all have descended from ADAM SHRIVER, who went from Frederick County, Maryland. to settle in Frederick County, Virginia, where he was living in 1782, at the head of a family of eleven white persons. While living in Frederick County, Virginia, he is known to have supplied 418 pounds of fine flour at 60 pounds per hundredweight to Richard Eastin for the use of the Colonial Army. (Public Claim No. 86 Frederick County, Virginia.) After the Revolution ADAM SHRIVER moved to Dunkard Creek, and was taxed in Greene Township, Washington County, in 1784, as a foreign resident. On March 10, 1803, he sold 180 acres of land on Dunkard Creek to his son ABRAHAM, in a deed in which he is joined by wife, CHRISTINA. (Monongalia County DB. 30 pp.4) His wife may have been a STROSNIDER. ADAM SHRIVER is thought to have been born about 1736. He died is buried near Pentress (West) Virginia, where markers now are un=readable. A family record supplies the names of five children, to which we have added a sixth because of certain evidence that seems to confirm this and warrant inclusion. A seventh child may have been a HENRY SHRIVER of early record, but certainly GEORGE SHRIVER, who is taxed as living outside Greene Township in 1784, along with ADAM SHRIVER, was a close connection. (There should be more information on this topic, but I didn't copy it when I had the book on loan from the library) What else I do have is: (1) Children of: GEORGE and CHRISTINA (Shriver) LEMLEY (2) Children of: ADAM and MARTHA (Stephens) SHRIVER (3) Children of: MARK and SUSANNAH (Shriver) GORDON (4) Children of: BASIL and SARAH (Shriver) WHITE (5) Children of: ISAAC and JANE (Shriver) WHITE (6) Children of: JACOB and ELIZABETH (Inghram) SHRIVER (7) Children of: HENRY and RACHEL (White) SHRIVER (8) Children of: JOHN and ELEANOR (Maple) SHRIVER (9) Children of: REV. DAVID WHITE (10) Children of: ISAAC WHITE Thats all folks.............................. Lori ; ) ************************************** AOL now offers free email to everyone.
