    1. [PAGRE] McGary... Lowery?... Johnson... Grim(m)
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: JudyFlorian Surnames: McGary, Lowery, Johnson, Grim, Grimm, Rossell Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.pennsylvania.counties.greene/10899/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I have some new but confusing clues for my ancestor, Thomas McGary, Cameron, WVA died 1905. He was married to Sarah Grim or Grimm Jan 1871 West Alexander PA. Do records exist for marriages performed by J. Finley Mays, Esq -- Justice of the Peace -- West Alexander PA? A first cousin of Sarah Grim/Grimm identified himself as Abraham Johnson---I need to know more about the Grim/mm and Johnson families. I assume one of Sarah's aunts married a Johnson? I do not know Sarah's parents or sublings' names. The government tried to prove Thomas McGary was married to someone else and so, cheated Sarah A McGary out of her widow's pension. The govt cited that "a" Thomas McGary married Elisabeth LOWERY Dec 4, 1866 both of Marshall Co WVA. This was found by the gov't examiner in 1910 in the marriage docket of Baptist Rev. Job Rossell who was pastor at South Wheeling Baptist Church Greene Co PA , and at the 1st Ridge and Wolf Run Baptist Churches in Marshall Co WVA near Ryerson's Station -- he pastored from 1861 until his death 1884. Does anyone in Greene Co PA know if Rev. Job ROSSELL's marriage dockets exist anywhere? Does anyone know anything about this Elisabeth LOWERY ? Now it appears the gov't or the son-in-law of Rev. Rossell (who was looking in Rossell's dockets) got a bit confused because the son-in-law, Thomas J. McCleary looking at the records on Feb 5, 1910 (his wife was daughter of Job Rossell) said he found no evidence of Thomas McGary marrying "Sarah BURKETT" ! Well, Sarah A. Grim / Grimm was never a BURKETT by birth or marriage. It makes no sense why they mentioned looking for Burkett. Sarah A. Grim / Grimm claimed she married ONCE to Thomas McGary. So I believe the gov't or Mr. McCleary was looking for a name that either never existed or they simply got confused. The Pension examiners supposedly culled court house records in WVA and Washington PA and found no record of marriage (for Grim/Grimm or for the *supposed* 1st wife Lowery) and no record of divorces. It'd be interesting to prove that the gov't made a huge mistake in saying Thomas McGary had a first wife named Elisabeth Lowery. IF there was a 1st marriage to Lowery, possibly HER family-descendants have a family story about her husband leaving her? He would have left before 1871, if the gov't is right that she existed. (He married Jan 1871 to Sarah Grim/Grimm). Also, maybe Lowery descendants heard of one identifying physical mark that Thomas McGary had?? The "death of former wife" the gov't wrote occurred about 1892---(again, IF this person existed!). Attacking the problem from another angle-- Was there a completely different Thomas McGary of WVA (once VA) who did marry Elisabeth Lowery? Are there descendants? If anyone knows the couple Thomas McGary m. 1871 to Sarah Ann (Anne) Grim or Grimm, please reply. She went by "Annie McGary." After 1905, she lived on Weirich Ave., Washington, Pa. They had several or more children; 3 were minors in 1905, under age 16. If anyone knows more about the Greene Co info, I'd love to hear from you. Thomas McGary and Sarah Ann "Annie" Grimm McGary are my 4th great grandparents. Judy Florian Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. From what I understand, she was an attorney who unsuccessfully sued on the behalf of a Calvert line in order to obtain renumeration from the estate of a Lord Calvert who had received a large land grant in MD? Why was it a scandal - was the suit not in good faith? Thanks, dee Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. John Minor and how that relates to the Calverts of Dunkard Creek. Even some of that remains unclear because the purpose of this was to find out how John Minor's 3rd wife was kin (probably a sister) of Frances "Fanny" Bullitt Calvert, 2nd wife of Isaac father of Thomas Calvert who repaired John Minor's Mill in about 1809. I will say this: The Calverts of Southern Greene Co and Wetzel Co removed into Ohio or to IT, and Southern MO. I would say there is a very good possibility that the Minor descendants had members who did move to the west--the Oil Fields of WV etc led men into that industry and they followed the fields discovered with the Industry. For the Calverts for example, my grandfather Arthur b 1876 d 1967 was a oil man all of his working life just about. He was the son of John Ewing b 1856 m Martha Lemasters(they lived in Tyler, later became Wetzel). John had at least 3 other sons that worked in the oilfield and end up in Oklahoma. In the family Descent of Hugh Ewing Calvert, great uncle of John, his grandsons(at least two of them worked in the Oilfield. Now Hugh Ewing was involved with Greene County all of his life and is buried at Valley Chapel along with his wife. Hugh's son, Dr. Thomas Miller Calvert, had two sons, one killed in an oilfield explosion in OK. And so on. I don't know if this is any help but if your friend's Minors are connected to Col. John Minor, and they know about his third wife, I am trying to connect her to a parent or husband, John or Jean Bulet, Bullett, Bullitt etc. If I recall correctly, her name was Elizabeth Jane. She married first General Wilson who died in 1777 due to affliction in the march East to Brandwine. She married second, a Hawkins, and third John Minor. B 1763 if I recall. Fanny, b 1856 I think, is her sister. She married Isaac Calvert b 1747/8 and Isaac removed from Chester Co to Washington County between 1790 US Census and 1793 Tax list. He was living in Cumberland Twp in 1793. Later he apparently bought land in Southern Greene County as it was formed from great Washington County. Isaac died in Greene 1830, or possible 1829 (not in US Census of 1830 but we haven't been able to figure out where Frances is either. Frances removed to Boone Co IN with her daughter Sarah Hannah b 1785 who married George Dy! e. They are all three buried there in Boone Co. This is where we get the birth date for Fanny but no date on the stone for her death. We don't know when she married Isaac whose first wife was Elizabeth Gart(by record, marriage 1769 Old Swedes Church, New Castle Co DE). Another researcher believes her maiden name was Cart. Thomas Calvert b 1769 is then, son of Elizabeth and probably the early children born in Chester Co(Isaac Jr, Robert, Ezekiel). Ezekiel b 1777 is the last child of record until Sarah Hannah(at least who survive). So a gap in births, 1778 - 1784. This leads me to believe that Sarah's mother was Fanny as were the later children, but we haven't proven this. As I mention, it was Thomas Calvert who repaired the mill along with someone else(I can't recall the other Gents name) of John Minor who had built the first mill west of the Monongahela R. So I hope that gives you an idea to pass on and maybe your researcher with the Minor connection can aid me in return with lead. I think Fanny and Elizabeth Jane were Bullitts (b 1756 and 1761/3) and that their father was Jean or John. They probably came out of Chester(Philly area).
