Dear Pennsylvania Genealogy Listers, dear Lancaster County genealogists and dear Washington County listers, I am hot on the trail of my great-great-grandfather, whose name was Abram (sometimes Abraham) ZIEGLER (sometimes Zeigler, but we all are familiar with the problem of German -ie- becoming English -ei- ). He was born in 1821, in Pennsylvania, but I don't know where, and he married one Elizabeth Ross, also born in 1821. Their first child, Jane Brown ZIEGLER was born in 1845 in Lancaster Co. Their second child, Thomas Jefferson ZIEGLER, my great-grandfather whom I'll call TJZ, was born in Carlisle, Cumberland Co., as was his sister Mary C. ZIEGLER (married name Benton) in 1847. Then the family moved west, settling in East Finley, Washington Co., Pennsylvania. I have found them in the 1860 and 1880 Federal censuses for Pennsylvania. The very kind (and very, very learned) folks at the Cumberland Co. Historical Society cannot connect my Abram Ziegler to the other Zieglers living in Cumberland Co. at the time. The Ziegler mailing list has been understanding, but also unable to help. I do not know if there is a possible Adams Co. connection as well, since after TJZ got a medical discharge from his unit in the Civil War (most of his right elbow got blown away during the Battle of the Wilderness), he first went to stay with Joseph and David ZEIGLER (sic) in Adams Co., before returning to his parents' home, which now was in Claysville, Washington Co. He married in 1866 and moved to Ohio in 1878, and died in Savannah, Ohio in 1903. His wife was named Nancy Garrett Gibson, born in 1842, in Washington Co., and Nancy's father was named Samuel A. Gibson, born in 1819 in Pennsylvania, and her mother was named Margaret Thompson (who was born in northern Ireland and came to the States as a child). I would be grateful for any help in my search: here are the three areas I need help in: 1. Precise birth dates and places for Abram Ziegler and Elizabeth Ross, and their parents' names... 2. The death and burial data for the two of these as well. 3. Any information about Gibsons in Washington Co. I'd be happy to help anyone with research in Germany, since I live and work here now. I'm a professor at the University of Wuppertal (not far from Duesseldorf) and I live with my wife and family in Muenster. Thanks. Jeff Richards Muenster, Germany

New on Past Voices: Letters Home Collection of letters written by John W. Keller of Kentucky, Sgt.16th Infantry U.S.A., who fought in the .U.S. Mexican War 1847-1848. These letters are written to John's family in Pennyslvania, and provide a fascinating glimpse into the war. John also mentions many other men (soldiers) in the war at his side, so if you have ancestors who fought in this war, be sure to have a look at http://pastvoices.com/usa/keller_mexicanwar1.shtml Lorine Lorine McGinnis Schulze The Olive Tree Genealogy http://OliveTreeGenealogy.com/ Past Voices:Letters Home http://pastvoices.com/ My Family Branches http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~myfamilybranches/ otg@csolve.net olivetreegen@netscape.net

Hi. I just wanted to let you know that I have set up a new board room for the Waring family researchers. The Waring families have always claimed to be connected, lets share our information and find out how. We are concentrating on trying to get into touch with others that are researching the same lines, and breaking down the walls that we have run across. Would you like to join us? You don't have to sign in, and the messages are kept for 60 days so check back frequently. http://pluto.beseen.com/boardroom/t/57567/ Sincerely, Renee Waring

We would like to invite you to re-visit our website, The POORHOUSE STORY (a clearinghouse for information about 19th century American poorhouses) at http://www.poorhousestory.com We just posted a portion of a 1904 federal government report which summarizes the poor laws in every state. On the PENNSYLVANIA page we have copied the excerpt for just your state. It is interesting to see how the laws varied from state to state. And understanding which state or county agency had administrative responsiblity over poorhouses may help you locate local poorhouse records more easily. DIRECTIONS: At the homepage (link above) click on POORHOUSES BY STATE, then on PENNSYLVANIA on the table of states. If you have been to the website recently you may have to click REFRESH or RELOAD on the browser to see the new information. You will find the link to this excerpt near the top of the page in a section titled HISTORY and marked with a big yellow NEW arrow. There are other pages on the site which may give you some interesting perspective on poorhouses. They are off the homepage and include: the HISTORY page and the LETTER TO GENEALOGISTS as well as FEATURED ARTICLES. There are great tips for researching poorhouse records for yourself on the RECORDS page; and you might want to subscribe to our (almost) monthly newletter (which you can do in the lower right corner of the homepage). The information on our site will only grow through the submissions of generous readers. If you would like to e-mail me ... please do so off-list because I cannot maintain subscriptions to as many lists as we post messages on. (You can use an e-mail link off one of our web pages.) We hope you enjoy the site! Thanks, Linda Crannell (aka=The Poorhouse Lady)
There is a mailing list that deals with medical genealogy. You might want to voice your opinion there. MEDICAL-GENEALOGY-L@rootsweb.com and MEDICAL-PEDIGREE-L@rootsweb.com ----- Original Message ----- Wrom: LEJGDGVCJVTLBXFGGMEP Sent: Saturday, 06 April, 2002 05:06 To: PAGENWEB-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Off topic subject. Hi everyone. This is really off topic, but you are all my friends so I thought I would let you know about this as it is becoming a common problem. If I get into trouble for this, please understand my concern. I have twins that are both allergic to peanuts. Leah is the worst. She swells up in the head very fast. Shock is the next phase, and I am trying to avoid that as most don't survive the shock. The problem that we are having is the cross contamination that is going on in the US. If you think about it I know you will see the problem. When you produce a good product, and produce a peanut product in the same plant, you take the chance of cross contamination and someone somewhere will react. If you look at the M&M candies you will see that they have put on the package "produced in a facility that also produces a peanut product" or some such warning. What this has done for us is taken M&M's off of our diets. The warning is nice, but doesn't help since the school is still feeding them M&M's and I can't get them to stop. Nestle has just gone through the same thing and have changed their mind and are not producing a peanut product (we put enough pressure on them). The point of this is Nabisco has just announced that in the US they will be producing a peanut butter Oreo cookie. What this does is take the Oreo cookie out of my cabinets and gives me another battle with the school system. Please, I know this is really off topic, but I have an address for Nabisco that you can send them your comments. Could you please do so and let them know your thought's? The more of us that comment the better. Nabisco in Canada has agreed to not produce a peanut product, perhaps we can get the US to do the same. Here is the address: http://www.kraftapps.com/contact_us/next.asp Please, help make a difference with this problem. Peanut allergy is something that is become very prevalent and is one of the worst allergies to have. As an example, in Canada a senior in high school ate a regular sandwich that was wrapped in plastic but in a bag with peanut butter sandwiches that were also wrapped in plastic. They were on a field trip, and the girl died in her mothers arms. There is nothing funny about this allergy. Sincerely, Renee Waring
