    1. Re: Need suggestion re: "where to look?"
    2. Did you ever consider that there was a change of spelling in the names you are looking for? Check this out. Near the bottom you will notice the name Foust. Cooper Twp. is in the County that you are looking at. Chapter XVI COOPER TOWNSHIP This is one of the small townships of the county. Its south base rests on the river, and its east line to its north limit follows up the line dividing the counties of Montour and Columbia. The entire township is rough and hilly, and but sparse agricultural spots in it. There are very few even narrow valleys, and yet there is some very good agricultural land. Its most valuable part is its mineral deposits. Here is much valuable iron ore yet to be dug, and its limestone is valuable. Just north of Grovania are the limestone kilns, started some years ago, and promised at one time to become extensive and valuable, but the stoppage of the Grove iron-mills at Danville caused a cessation of the lime kilns, and they have lain idle awaiting the revival of the iron manufactory, when they will become of great value and here will some time again be much activity. Two railroads pass from east to west through this township--the Catawissa and the D. L. & W. Roads.Grovania is the only village or postoffice in the township--the village here consisting of the name, the store and residence. The place was made a station on the railroad soon after its completion, and designated as a postoffice. It was named in honor of the Grove Bros., of Danville. Near it is a Lutheran Church--St. James--and a cemetery. The church is sometimes supplied from Catawissa and sometimes from Danville. St. Peter's Union Church is on the opposite side of the township. This is also a Lutheran Church, and is supplied in the same manner as is St. James, named above. The place where this latter church is located is known as Ridgeville, situated on the old stage road, but whose hopes departed when the railroad was built south of it and superseded the old coach. It once had a tavern with "accommodations for man and beast." Our information is that the earliest settlers in what is now Cooper Township, were the KRUMs. There is yet a number of the descendants of this family still in the township. Some suppose, on what is apparently good authority, too, that the FOUSTs were the early comers to this part of the county. Here again we find the CROMLEYs, whose descendants are still living in the neighborhood, where they first settled.   You can find this record at: http://freepages.books.rootsweb.com/~jowest/Research/HistoryOfMontour.htm

    3. I am trying to find a marriage record for George W. FAUST and Katherine Elizabeth SHEETS in Pennsylvania. Katherine was born 8 July 1854 in Northumberland Co., the daughter of Jacob and Sarah (nee WEIDENHAMMER) SHEETS (or SHEETZ); Katheirne's siblings were born in Northumberland and Snyder Counties. George's birth date is 8 Jun 1852 in PA. This information comes from the book The John Jacob Dreibelbis Family of America, 1732-1930 by Harvey C. Dreibelbis (I will do lookups), and from census information. I have found an IGI record stating that George W. FAUST and Katherine E. SHEETS were married in 1874 in Montour Co., but when I contacted the Montour County Clerk, they could find no record of this. However Sarah's brother, Wellington Dreibelbis WEIDENHAMMER, is found in Montour Co. in the 1850 and 1860 censuses (Jacob & Sarah's daughter, Sarah Jane, is living with Wellington in 1860; her intended, Henry W. GIBSON also lives in Montour Co.). Can anyone tell me if there are marriage indexes for Milton, Northumberland and Snyder counties? Ultimately, I am looking for the parents of George W. FAUST, who have eluded me thus far. I cannot find anything conclusive for him in any census prior to 1880, by which time he and Katherine had moved to Indianapolis, Indiana. I am at a loss as to how to locate his parents. Any suggestions are welcome. Thank you, Vicki Davis, CA

    1. Why I do my Genealogical Research.
    2. I wrote this last night for someone on another list who asked why we do genealogy. I thought others might like to read it. Whispers in the Wind What twist of fate has brought me to the person I am today? Was it the ocean voyage that brought my family here, Fraught with danger, death, fear, And the fervent hope that everything would be OK? Or was it the bountiful sight of this new land that to them made everything seem so clear. Several people in my families past gave up the safety and comfort of home and family for a chance at a new life, free of persecution and the constant struggle for food in a poor and destitute land.  They gave me a chance to grow in this new place they call America.  They gave me a chance to stand up for my freedoms without the fear of oppression.  It is not just our right to study our family tree, it is our duty to remember those that formed this land, as a child forms a ball from clay.  That's right, DUTY!  To forge ahead in life and not remember the price paid by those that have gone before would be a crime against humanity.  Not just in this country, but the mother country as well.  It doesn't matter if you are red, white, black or yellow.  We are all of the same breed, one we call man kind, and we all need to be remembered. So the next time you see and old, beaten down cemetery, stop, look, and listen to the voices riding the wind of those that have gone before.  Take a moment, with your eye's closed, and you just might hear a childs laughter long forgotten, or the soft gentle tones of ones whisper of love to another.  Then record the cemetery, and share it!  These people deserve to be remembered if only on paper.  The next time you go into a used book store and find and old family Bible, copy the family information out and pass it on.   Without the Genealogists research and records, the past would slowly become only whispers in the wind. 3. Hello, I am looking for info on Emil Wiegand, a beer brewer who came from Germany and was one of the pioneers of beer brewing in Japan. I admit I am not related to him, though. He obviously arrived in 1854 in the USA, filed his letter of intent in 1856 in Philadelphia, spent 1869-80 in Yokohama/Japan - successively as employed brewer, as owner of a brewery and partner of a brewery, predecessor of today's beer giant Kirin - and died in San Francisco 1882. His other (date and place of birth, location and activity in the US, reasons for leaving for Japan etc.) whereabouts are not clear yet. Who can give me more details on him? I am also prepared to take over reasonable expenses if someone can do a lookup in the naturalization records and/or obit of San Francisco.
