    3. George & All, In response to your post on the Rev. John PAGE of Elizabeth City Co., VA as of 30 Jun 1680...for what it is worth on this subject.... Here is how Elizabeth City County was described in THE VIRGINIA GENEALOGIST, Vol. 9, p. 16: "The county was originally called Kissoughtan but the name was changed to Elizabeth City in 1619 or 1620. In 1636 the county of New Norfolk was created from the territory of Elizabeth City on the south of Hampton Roads. There were no changes in its boundaries thereafter until 1882 when the division line between Warwick and Elizabeth City was altered slightly in the vicinity of Newport News. The county has always been bounded on the north by York County and on the west by Warwick County." "Many of the records of Elizabeth City County before 1865 have been destroyed. Deeds and wills, recorded in the same volume, are preserved for 1689-99, 1715-21....." and later, not copied here. >From the above and the following deeds, it appears that the John PAGE whose deeds are given below lived in the part of Elizabeth City Co. that fell into New Norfolk Co. in 1636, so these deeds seem relevant to our discussion. I have not searched the available Elizabeth City Co. deeds as yet (1689-1699). My research into the records of Norfolk County, VA shows the following deeds involving a John PAGE (no "Rev. before his name). Whether or not this is the same man as the Rev. John PAGE that you mentioned, George, remains to be determined. All of these deeds are for the same land (50 acres of "Woodland ground" on the south side of Ireland's(?) Creek bordering the lands of William MANNING(?) and Richard NASH: Roger HODGIS/HODGES & wf. Mary to John PAGE Bk. 6, p. 57 (30 Dec 1695) Roger HODGES & wf. Mary to John PAGE Bk. 7, p. 3 (same date) John PAGE & wf. Elianor to John BALLENTINE Bk. 7, p. 5 (16 Aug 1703) Roger HODGES & wf. Mary to John PAGE Bk. 7, p. 39 (30 Dec 1695) John PAGE & wf. Elienor to John BALLENTINE Bk. 7, p. 40 (16 Aug 1703) The above is a case of the same two deeds being recorded several times. It is evident that this John PAGE purchased 50 acres of land from Roger and Mary HODGIS/HODGES in 1695 and transferred it to John BALLENTINE in 1703. The amount of money paid in each instance is not given. The deed "to" John PAGE only states that "a valuable consideration" was received for the land and the deed "from" John & Elianor/Elienor PAGE to BALLENTINE merely says that the land was "Assigned and Transferred" to BALLENTINE with no amount of money mentioned. I have not read the sparse court records that are available for this county from 1664-1699, but I've found no other records for this John PAGE in this county after 1703. John PAGE, Esq'r appears in the 1800 Land Tax List (courtesy of T.L.C. Genealogy, Miami Beach, FL) although I did not find him listed in the Personal Property Tax Lists (read from 1791-1812). People of that name appear in the censuses of 1820 onward, but they are evidently not related to the early John PAGE of the above deeds.
