Hi, Warren, Sorry to be so long to answer your 16 Nov message. I don't consider myself to be an expert on the Caroline Co., VA PAGE families, but I have unearthed some information about them that might help you. I've read the Personal Property Tax Records (1783-1826), Court Orders (1732-1809), Marriage Bonds (1787-1852) and various probate records and found the following PAGE men in that county for the following years. You can judge for yourself which ones "might be" the father of the PAGE women who md. HILL men. ca. 1776-1781: John PAGE, Jr. listed as one of the "members of the younger generation who served on one of the 36 "seats on the vestries of the county" - exact dates not given, but during this time period. 1776: John PAGE, Jr. resigned as a magistrate. 1777: Deed from John PAGE & wf. Elizabeth acknowledged in Ct. on 11 Sep 1777. This is probably the John PAGE who md. Elizabeth BURWELL - he was from the Col. John PAGE of James City Co., VA line 1779: Nicholas PAGE, decedent - John PAGE, executor or administrator 1779 Tax List: John PAGE William PAGE 1779: Nicholas PAGE Estate (he prob. died before the above tax list was made) 1780: William PAGE exempted from paying taxes because he was either too old or too infirm. 1781: William PAGE decedent - James PAGE, executor or administrator 1783 Tax List: George PAGE John PAGE 1788: Delinquent Taxpayers - included George PAGE. 1789: "State of Insolvents return'd....for Revenue Tax 1789" - includes: "Wm. Page has not one acre of land tho stands charged with 143 acres which James Page is also charged with" 1800 Tax List: (takes the place of the lost 1800 VA Census) James PAGE (he prob. belongs to the Nicholas PAGE and William PAGE line Elizabeth PAGE (no males in family - she probably the widow of John PAGE of the Col. John PAGE family Joseph PAGE 1810 Census: John PAGE Joseph PAGE 1820 & 1830 Censuses: John PAGE (only one) 1840 Census: John PAGE William PAGE 1850 Census: Wm. PAGE is the only male PAGE. There are three other PAGEs under age 10 in other families. I only read the court records through 1809, so will list the PAGEs named in these records only from 1800-1809 here: (I read these personally from microfilms of the original records which were difficult to read in places) 10 Mar 1801: William PAGE's administration on the estate of James PAGE is granted. Reubin Braddus (spelled correctly), John Broadus, Giles Richeson and Chiltion White or any three of them are appointed to appraise the estate. (Ct. Order Bk. 1799-1802: 265) 9 Jun 1801: William PAGE & wf. Elizabeth agst. William Grafton & his wf. Susannah - "In Slander" - this case is found for the defendants. PAGE and Grafton are ordered to pay various witnesses for their testimony: Wits. for the PAGEs: William Jones Phabe Grover (spelled correctly) Lewis Bell & Ursula Bell Wits. for the GRAFTONs: Nancy Asher John Bell John Bates Thomas Ship Anthony Seal Vincent Surts(?) Benjamin Hall Thomas Hatlett (Ct. Order Bk. 1802-1804:507-508) 13 Apr 1803: William PAGE, admin'r of James PAGE case agst. Robert Garnett & James Anderson - "In Debt". (Ct. Order Bk. 1802- 1804: 156) 10 May 1803: Patty PAGE given Letters of Administration in the estate of William PAGE. Armistead Jerdon, James Martin, William Pitts and Richard Chapman or any three of them are appointed to appraise the estate. (Ct. Order Bk. 1802-1804: 173) 9 Nov 1803: There was supposed to be a PAGE entry on this page and on this date, but only a small portion of the page (and those preceding and after it) is left. If anyone has access to these records, would you please fill this in for us? (Ct. Order Bk. 1802-1804: 326) 9 Nov 1803: William Page, administrator of James PAGE agst. Thomas Ship obliger of Washington Jones & Thomas Ship - "In Debt". Joell Kidd came to ct. and gave security for Thomas Ship. (Ct. Order Bk. 1802-1804: 332) NOTE: I did not read the ct. books 1805-pt. of 1807. 14 Dec 1807: William PAGE, admin'r of James PAGE agst. Benjamin Redd & William Stuart - "Motion on Forthcoming Bond". Robert B. Hill states that the defendants had legal notice of this suit, but didn't come to ct. and made default. Plt. won the case. (Ct. Order Bk. 1807-1809: 4) 8 Aug 1808: William White agst. John PAGE - "In Debt" I did not read these court records past 1809. Several of the above court entries sound as if they would be of interest to you....mentioning the WHITE and HILL names. Hope they give you some clues for further research. However, it appears that there were at least two different PAGE families in Caroline Co. at these times..... 1. The family of John PAGE & his wf. Elizabeth BURWELL (of the Col. John PAGE line. 2. The family of the Nicholas PAGE, ancestry unknown by me at this time. Good luck!!! I haven't been able to figure out anything new on the Nicholas line either!!! I'm sending a copy of this to the PAGE-L of Rootsweb.com too....for other persons interested in these Caroline Co. PAGE families. Dolores in CA
