Hi All I am at a brick wall researching one of the first Pages in early Niagara [Canada] He was called Thomas Otway-Page and took that name possibly because either- *there were other Thomas Pages in early residence there [including maybe my ancestor by the same name] *several sources report that he had done something his family did not like - so he took his mothers name. I think this name is Page because he is reported to be the brother of several Otway people of great distinction. There are no libraries in western Oregon with access to the Oxford University and their Free Access to the Dictionary of National Biography which is shown as the source on Wikipedia for information. Would one of you Early British Researchers who knows someone in Gt. Britain please email this request to a researcher in England where ALL public libraries have access to this OXFORD DICTIONARY OF NATIONAL BIOGRAPHY? [Or find a North American library with the same free access?] I need to find as much information on the name of the mother for these men and confirm that they are also in the same family. All items I have seen indicate that her maiden name was PAGE. My research so far shows that these men are brothers: *Thomas Otway-Page d. near Toronto ca 1832 [He 'took his mothers name because of some disagreement in the family'] *Sir Loftus William Otway [shown as the 4th of 5 brothers in Wikipedia] *Admiral Sir Robert Waller Otway 1770 - 1846 [also shown as the son of Cooke and Elizabeth Otway - was she a Page?] There is a good picture of the birthplace of these men at Castle Otway in Tipperary, Ireland - at the URL : http://www.abandonedireland.com/CastleOtway_1.html There is scant information about the descendants of Thomas Otway-Page although I have about 96 names so far with the only person currently living not knowing a lot of relatives or much history. I have every newspaper mention of this man and his War of 1812 claims, land claims as a UEL, and some of the military service records for Lincoln Militia etc. Genetically it is likely that this person is an Otway and all Pages descended from him are likely all male Otway DNA. The family used Otway-Page for several generations in Canada in the very first part of the 1800's, then used Otway as a middle name for everyone with Page as the surname, then many later and now living generations used only PAGE as a surname. Not many descendants of this man are doing genealogy. Ninety Six known descendants are known at this time. In a totally different PAGE family from another Thomas Page who was also likely in early Niagara maybe as early as the 1780's when Joseph Page of the Butlers Rangers was also there [any relationship still unknown] there are about 7000 known descendants already [all in my Page DNA Line E] so there MUST be more of these Otway-Pages around by now! It is about 7 generations later now! Many thanks to all who can help on this early Canadian line of research. Surely all the big research universities and Genealogy research groups like NEHGS have access to this British resource library. Regards to all, Ruthanne Page
Hello Ruthanne, I had never heard of the dictionary you mentioned so I poked around a little and found that you can browse the index without a subscription. http://www.oup.com/oxforddnb/index/ It doesn't give much information, just names, birth and death years and occupation, but that might be enough to find out if the person you're looking for is there. Even if you know about this already, I thought it might be useful to someone else on the list.
