    3. Please forgive me for asking but is the Isle of Wight and Surrey Co you refer to .... in USA or UK? ... I believe that many UK counties and town names were duplicated in the US with the migration of souls from UK to USA .... but sometimes in reading these emails I do wonder which continent the writer is referring to. I usually give up trying to work it out and delete the email.... probably to the detriment of my research. In the past in communication with a couple of like UK researchers they have expressed the same confusion and used the same delete method. Perhaps there could be a way of distinguishing the countries for those of us who are not familiar with the states etc of USA. Cheers Heather Domoney ----- Original Message ----- From: "George W. 1. [PAGE] Thomas and Alic Page of Isle of Wight Co. (sic), VA
    2. George W. Page
    3. I have found out that Thomas and Alic Page of Isle of Wight Co. (sic), VA, and their known descendants were members of the Society of Friends (Quakers). In the record below it states they were from Nansemond county, VA. The following extracts of Quaker Records were found on Family Archive CD510, Colonial Virginia Source Records, 1600s-1700s, Early Quaker Records in Virginia, pp. 1-64. These records were furnished by Mr. Miles White, Jr. of Baltimore, MD from the records of the Baltimore Yearly Meeting of Friends for which he was custodian. One of these records was the book begun in 1673 containing the earliest records of the Friends in Nansemond and Isle of Wight counties, VA. He states that in the early days Nansemond county was largely peopled by the Puritan and the Quaker. He cites other references in which many of these names appear: Hotten's List; Neill's Virginia Carolorum; and Dr. Stephen B. Weeks book, Southern Quakers and Slavery. The book is not in chronological order; but instead is in sections of marriages, births, deaths, etc. The Index lists the pages that the following PAGEs and YARRETT names: Page, Alce/Alice 15, 19, 20, 21, 43 Page, Elizabeth 50; Page, Filicia 33; Page, Henry 50; Page, Isabell 50; Page, Jno. 34; Page, John 33, 34; Page, Mary 19, 20; Page, Rebecca/Rebecka 19, 43; Page, Thomas 4, 7, 8, 9, 11, 12, 14, 16, 17, 19, 20, 21, 23, 24, 27, 28, 29, 35, 43, 50; Page, Thomas Jr. 50; Page, William 18 Parratt (see Yarrett) [NOTE: The name Garrett/Garatt was NOT indexed, nor was`it found in the reference!] Yarrat (see Yarrett) Yarratt (see Yarrett) Yarrett/Yarratt Elizabeth 37, 45; Katheren 37, 38; Margaret/Margrett 37, 49; William 37, 45, 46, 49 [Caution: The Quarkers followed a different calendar than we do today, so the dates below need to be converted to conform to modern useage!] Tho: Page together with 15 others was listed as a witness to the marriage of John Harris and Elizabeth Church of Isle of Wight Co. on the 13th day of the fourth month in the year 1689 p. 11. 1. [PAGE] Quakers in Tidewater, Virginia in the 1600s and 1700s
    2. George W. Page
    3. I have found out that Thomas and Alice Page of Isle of Wight Co., VA, and their known descendants were members of the Society of Friends (Quakers). Details will be submitted shortly; but first some introduction into the Society's activities in Tidewater, Virginia in the 1600s - 1700s. The following quoted newspaper article provides that introduction. GWP ---------- QUARKERS' RESISTANCE HAS LONG VIRGINIA ROOTS George Fox (1624-1691), the 17th century English founder of the Society of Friends, familiarly known as Quakers, would have heartily endorsed the action of two of his latter-day Norfolk followers who were featured in a front page article in The Virginian-Pilot on June 4, 1996. (skip) Born in Leicestershire, England, Fox early experienced what he called the ``Inner Light of Christ.'' His mysticism attracted many who were then seeking for positive affirmation of faith during the troubled times of the English Civil War and the subsequent Protectorate of Oliver Cromwell. Since Fox's teachings were contrary to those of England's Established Church as well as anti-military, it was not long before he and his followers were in trouble. Until the passage of the Act of Toleration by the British Parliament in 1688, Fox and his converts were subjected to violent persecution. But that only made the Quakers more zealous. Incidentally, the sect gained its popular name when Fox told an English judge to ``tremble at the Word of the Lord.'' Since Fox and many of his followers actually trembled when they proclaimed their faith, the name [Quaker] stuck and became the popular name for the persuasion from then on. As for Virginia, there were Quakers here from 1656, at which time Elizabeth Harris, one of Fox's missionaries, founded settlements of Friends along the James River. The movement spread rapidly eastward into Isle of Wight, Nansemond and Lower Norfolk Counties. Since the Virginia Quakers, like their English brethren, flouted civil obedience, the magistrates became increasingly hostile. After the restoration of Charles II in 1660, at which time the arch royalist, Sir William Berkeley, again became Virginia's governor, the persecution became intense. Since the Quakers had become particularly numerous in Lower Norfolk County (now the cities of Norfolk, Portsmouth and Chesapeake), Berkeley fired off a steamy missive to the ``gentlemen of the County of Lower Norfolk'' in 1663, enjoining them to use every effort to root out ``ye abominal seede of ye Quakers.'' Berkeley's hatred of the sect was echoed by Henry Beecher, a Lower Norfolk County Anglican who declared of one dissenter: ``It would be better for that Quaker dog to go stark naked into a red hot oven than to put his foot on my plantation.'' Even so, the Virginia Quakers continued to thrive, and by 1672, when George Fox was on his missionary journey to North America, he preached to a great concourse of Lower Norfolk County people at the Elizabeth River plantation of John Porter, an event he described in his journal as ``precious and glorious.'' Fox died in London, England, three years after the Act of Toleration had taken the heat off the Society of Friends. Meanwhile, they had continued to increase throughout the world. That this was true in Virginia is evident from the following caustic quotation from The History of the Dividing Line (1729), written by Col. William Byrd II of Westover. ``We passed no less than two Quaker meeting houses. The persuasion prevails much in the lower end of Nansemond County for want of ministers to pilot the people to a decenter (sic, more decent) way to heaven. The ill reputation of the tobacco in these lower parishes make the clergy unwilling to accept of them except such whose abilities are as mean as their pay.''

    1. Re: [PAGE] Report of PAGE Y-DNA Project
    2. George W. Page
    3. Yes, I know that they haven't found his ancestry! It appears to me from the DNA that not all in that Family Line are descended from him. Some who were tested appear to have been descended from his close relative (brother or uncle). This means to me he may NOT have been the most senior immigrant PAGE ancestor, and he could have been born somewhere in Virginia. On the other hand he could have arrived in company with a brother, father, or uncle. There are several in his Family Line who are diligently searching for his ancestor, both in VA and in Eng. We hope to narrow the search in England to a specific county based upon the test results of a, as yet unfound, male PAGE who shares a common male ancestor; but whose family remained in England from at least the early 1700s. 3. The purpose of this PAGE Family Y-Chromosome DNA Group is to identify the various PAGE lines and help members of the group of PAGE males (or their proxie) find their immigrant PAGE family line, ancestors, and living cousins. The PAGE group was started in early 2002 using Oxford Ancestry and FTDNA test results of male PAGEs & PAIGEs to establish and verify 'fingerprint markers' for about 15 different PAGE immigrant lines to America. We also encourage and welcome male PAGEs who live in Canada, the UK, and 'Down Under.' To date the PAGE Surname project has 85 male members and 78 kits have been returned with test results. These results have been analyzed by me and put into Family Lines A-N based upon their test results. FAMILY LINE ASSOCIATIONS The Family Line Associations of several of them are defined as follows: Family Line A: Descended from Jeremiah Page, b.c. 1730 (possibly co. Norfolk, Eng.) immigrated c. 1750 to New London, CT, then to Columbus, Chenango Co., NY. Jeremiah m. "Polly" Eames/Ames c. 1759 in Norwich, CT, Family Line B: Family Line C: Haplotype I and Ia1. Associated with most distant probable ancestor who was Thomas Page, b. c. 1650, England and immigrated to Isle of Wight Co., VA around 1680. Thomas Page m. Alis (Alice?) Garrett. In some of the older records in Isle of Wight, VA, it is spelled Yarrett. Family Line D: Haplotype R1b and R1b1c. Associated with the immigrant John Page of Haverhill, MA who immigrated in 1635.
